I remember playing this game on Sega Channel back in the day, I don't think I even made it to the third stage it was so damn difficult. I remember thinking it was kinda ironic that the game is called "The Immortal" and yet EVERYTHING kills you in the game. It's certainly an interesting game and I would honestly love to see a remake of it. Though some people consider Dark Souls to sorta be in the same vein. Also, man, I'd REALLY love to have a poster of that Grim Reaper! It's bad ass. Oh, good video by the way, I really love in-depth videos like this one.

+DannyTcat Thanks a lot! I like in-depth videos myself, so it was definitely fun to make, although a lot of hard work. And yeah, that Grim Reaper art is one of my all-time favorite covers! It would make a sweet tattoo! I think a remake of this game would be awesome; though still in an isometric view. And yeah, this game is tough as hell, but I liked it so much I just played the hell out of it. I'm a masochist for certain games.

Watched both vids. Loved them both. It's nice to see such in depth coverage of a game on two different platforms. To this day I have never played this game but have always wanted to. Great videos and great humor! You had me laughing out loud on several occasions :)

Thanks, man! Yeah, it had a lot of differences to cover, and I really dig the story and atmosphere of the game. Since you like tough games, I definitely recommend this one. And glad I was able to make you laugh. The game presented so many golden opportunities for jokes, so I took advantage of it. The spider death looks possibly like a bug where it decides you have triggered the death scene when you begin a step in the web corridor; but only executes the scene when you finish your step - if you touch the ladder before completing your step then you get to go up the ladder but still have a spider death pending on your next step

Brilliant video of a brilliant and original game for its time. I owned the Genesis version (or Megadrive where im from) & it was scary, atmospheric, had really gruesome death scenes & so fkn frustrating! I almost tore my joypad in half trying to get through that worm room! From memory that worm locator was a pile of sh*t & i actually got through the room using the directions which confused me at first - which way is left in an isometric landscape? Also I mustve attempted the Norlac level a million times aimlessly trying to ride the barrel around the edge of the whirlpool hoping the slithery b@stard would be sucked to its watery grave, but the ugly little sh*t kept killing me? Wtf was I doing wrong? With the ridiculously difficult levels that came before it, how was I to know that all I had to do was to drift my old arse on the barrell to the whirlpool, hold my nose & simply slip into the fkn thing! Doh!

Thanks! Yes, this game is extremely frustrating! But at the time, there was simply nothing like it, and it still stands alone today. I remember my dad playing it and I could hear him cursing and getting pissed at it from upstairs. I think everyone got frustrated with this game, but at the same time, couldn't put it down. Very cryptic.

Best videos yet! I also never got past the worm room when I played this as a kid, that is if I was lucky enough to get that far. There were a few games on the Genesis I remember getting just because they had the blood and gore never seen on the Nintendo. Unlike most of those this happened to be a good game as well.

The trick to the flying carpet room, is to only tap the D pad. Tap the control, and drift.

I'm not sure about the Genesis version as I have never played it, but in the Nintendo version you find a coffee pot in the second flying carpet room that you give to the game developers in the red room with the worms. The developers will give you a power which kills the Trolls in level six instead of having to fight them.

Good job with this. I think a gaming mag was utilized in order for me to get through this game back in the day, but I agree with you on some parts being very frustrating ,and cryptic, but at least I got through it before save states.

The first game that gave me nightmares, was Forbidden Forest on the Commodore 64. The blood and gore, and the excellent music, was a terrifying experience as a kid back in the day. 😱

I have only ever gotten the spiders on the top of the ladder ONCE and that made me think it was a fluke. The worm room is like the spike room after the king, once you know where to walk, you wind up getting all the way to the door in line vertically with the torch, and just B line it to the door, you won't even need the sensor. The manual in the genesis version is full of amazing art, and you could send away for a book which was basically the same art but the full on FULL story behind it. I had the book because my uncle ordered it, but I have long since lost it and never found hide nor hair of it online so, that sucks. I Distinctly remember it starting out with a toddler version of the wizard sitting in the triangle circle thing, and the story telling about how he was left for dead and found by Wordamir, raised as his student, and all sorts of other filler story of the city and it's history, so if you can find that lost book, please do a video of it Reading Rainbow style lol

Two games I owned as a child that I threw all sorts of tantrums at were, this and Rings of Power. I didn't come close to completing either game (I got stuck in the final room of the carpet level, never thought to walk clockwise around that circle, kinda kicking myself for taking about 14 years to crack that one) but completed them using emulators recently (thank fuck for save state) also, the password system was a nightmare. But these are the sort of games you'll never see again, the ones that throw you right in the deep end, where the first enemy can wipe you out, the first room bares an insta-death trap and you're given 3 measly lives. Loved this game, I hated it! Absolutely not for n00bs. I'm playing the second time round and can't outrun the seabeast. Anyway, amazing video and if I had to recommend a game, Rings of Power! *subscribed*

Thanks, dude! Is Rings of Power on the Genesis? And which version of The Immortal do you play? Yeah, it can be extremely frustrating! I remember my dad liked to play The Immortal when I was thirteen and would get so pissed. I would hear him yelling and pounding his fist on the floor, ha ha. If it weren't for save states.... that goddamn worm room! Or the spider room. And I remember that the sea monster is easier to outrun on one of the versions than the other, but I don't remember which.

I only ever played the Sega (Megadrive) version and didn't know there was an NES version until I watched this video. My did was the same with The Immortal, he never made it past level 2 as the isometric controls were too stiff for him in in the slime room also, the battles were far harder with the goblins than on level 1. So, I'd hear him shouting in frustration as a kid. I played it in 98-99 so, I'd be around 8-9 years old. I don't think an 8 year old these days would make it very far in this game, with the lack of tutorials and guidance. Also, where did you get all the information about the game, the images and the Slain Warrior's name etc? And yeah, Rings of Power is for the Sega. Are all your videos comparison videos? All in all, what did you prefer, The Immortal on NES or Sega Genesis?

Immortal on the Genesis for sure! The graphics are sweet, and I love the gore. The NES one is really good too, but it's missing the gore and the spider stage. Where did I get the info for this game? Lemme think.... The images I got from the NES instruction booklet. It was in full color and I believe it had most of the story in it as well--more in-depth than what is revealed in the actual game. And no, I don't only do comparisons, though I really like to compare games cuz I find the differences fascinating. I just released a Ghosts 'n Goblins Vs. video yesterday--my first in six months. And I'll keep an eye out for Rings of Power.

The graphical differences aren't as significant as one would think. The NES version holds its own compared to the Genesis one. Moreover, the Sega version seems more zoomed in than the NES version, making you less aware of surroundings. I wonder if that makes the game harder.

You also missed mentioning that after you give the coffee to the developers in the red worm room they give you the spell of body odor in the (NES Version) I just recently did gameplay of both versions I had the nes one for many years and got the genesis one in 1996. yea that bat is fucking horrible in the nes version. Love the fatalities in the genesis version so bloody.

There's a pot of coffee you can give to the developers (in the NES version), but it's hidden near a wall in the magic carpet room. If you give it to them you'll find they killed a couple trolls for you later.

I think a good game shouldn't be easy. The spider level is one of the most vivid experiences in video games for me. Because that's how it's properly done. When I see spiders IRL I always remember that place in The Immortal, and that means a lot. The worm sensor room is brilliant too. Very involving, because I think that's how things would work if it was real - clunky, fast expiring, very dangerous... Anyway, when I read Tolkien books, Gandalf character is this experienced old man from The Immortal to me :)
