Venezuelan here living abroad. Venezuela ended up worst than Cuba. Power cuts, corruption, mediocre administration, authoritarism and the list goes on. Chavez and his cronies put the country on a deep crisis unseen before. We were not a perfect country before, far from it, but the decline has been brutal the past 20 years. I really hope we don’t end up in a deeper crisis and I hope your predictions don’t become a reality.

In 2006-2007 I was attending a management course in Vancouver. Two of my classmates were a married couple, chemical engineers from Venezuela. They didn't have a single good word about Chavez, Chavistas, PDVS and everything that went with them. Couldn't stop patting themselves on the back for having been able to get out. I bet they're looking back and thinking it was the best decision in their life.

I lived in Venezuela from '90 to '94, two years in Caracas & two years in Maracaibo. It was a corrupt democracy & much was stolen by politicians but much also got through to the citizens. The good news was that everyone had a job & there was upward mobility within the jobs & the stores had every consumer good you can imagine, especially food. The people wanted "something better" so they voted in the socialists & everything has turned to crap over the past 20 years. That's the bad news. Now there are no more zoo animals because they have all been eaten, no stray dogs or cats because they met the same fate, most people have lost 20-40 pounds due to a lack of food, & 1/3 of the citizens have fled the country. remember this next time you vote, no matter what country you live in.

Venezuela is not quite there yet on the index, and that’s not really up to personal opinion. But I’m just speculating, I might be that Peter is not referencing the FSI at all here (though he’s most likely well familiar with it).

@@visitante-pc5zc Yup, "real" socialism can't last even 25 years like the utopian socialist societies in the U.S. (with few exceptions like some Christian Utopian Societies and even fewer secular exceptions like the Oneida commune, which even then didn't last longer than 50 years) during the 19th century, the anarchist societies in Spain during their Civil War, and CHAZ in Washington State during the BLM riots. Certainly, if it lasts at least 25 years like Venezuelan socialism has, it is by definition not "real" socialism. Lasting even 25 years is far more "success" than "real" socialism can ever achieve. Also their "success" is among the most catastrophic levels of failure by our standards.

Cuban society is functionally collapsed, it has all the same major problems as Venezuela, constant outages, unaffordable food, no commerce, no jobs, no medicine, not any other resources, etc. The nation had been teetering on the edge of functioning for a long time. The recession following COVID broke the illusion that things were just grinding along as normal, not really getting anywhere but not stressing either. The Cuban government still clings onto control though. Riots have increased a lot but the government just beats back protestors with violence and make an example out of the ones they catch. Those who aren't killed outright tend to disappear completely. Most people are still afraid of the government and it's violence. The desperation is there, but everyone agonizes about how to flee the country, rather than how to dig their heels in and regain it. The government has brainwashed people into docility and cowardice. Many more than usual are starving, but the thought to rebel doesn't even cross their minds. For a "revolutionary state" the people don't quite seem to know how to carry out a revolution.

@@Rainbow_Oracle Good post. I think you are correct. Only I don't think the Cuban people have been brainwashed into docility. They are docile because they live in a vicious police state. That is not brainwashing, that is an accurate understanding of the dangers of protest.

Venezuela produces a heavy oil that requires a thinner (naptha, kerosene) to be extracted. Canada also produces a heavy oil from the oil-sands located mainly in Alberta. The two are equivalencies, either will go through the oil refineries in Louisiana. That Canadian oil requires an "upgrader," which is pricey (figure around $13 billion) but then the upgraded output can be piped to the USA for further refining, and there is a limitless supply in those oil sands. Curiously, the Biden Administration has no enthusiasm for this project, and no capital is committed by anybody to build it. The oil-sands remain in low production as a result. The reduction in oil consumption is more correlated to the shift to natural gas for electricity generation and as a feedstock for the chemical industry than to "renewables," contrary to views expressed by commenters below. Cheers to all.

WTF? USA domestic crude production is at record high levels (check the official energy dept weekly data). Biden has opposed / stopped only the Keystone XL new pipeline. The other 4 Keystone piprlines (or 7 depending how you count segments) are open. There are other pipelines systems from Canada to usa.
@LRRPFco52

Keystone was going to combine Canadian crude with Bakken light and pipe it south together in the ideal mix for US refineries, dropping energy costs for US & Canada even further. Biden killed that day #1 as his top priority. Why? Because he's a puppet for someone who needs oil at $100/bbl to grow their economy. Can't say who on yt or the comment is deleted.

I live in Argentina but travel all throughout south America. Most Venezuelans are really great people and many of them cant wait to go home. This is one case where most of South America and almost all of the Venezuelans would appreciate it if the CIA could step up and do a coup. The main problem now is that the Army, ie the regime, smuggles a large part of the drugs for the cartels in the eastern part of the country. They do that for the US$ income. That and the fact the government is mining the gold belt, albeit very inefficiently also for gold to trade for US$. What a tragedy that country has become.

So he instead talks about specific policies, like pre-selling oil, that ruined Venezuela. It's more useful and actionable information. And as for Peter supporting socialism in the US, he might support some socialist programs. However, going full communist requires authoritarianism (and slight amounts of brain damage), which Peter absolutely does not support. At least that's the vibe I get.

Peter has been saying for years that the "green revolution" is impossible. The IEA report states that the biggest problem facing the oil industry in 2030 is the largest oversupply of oil in 80+ years. Mainly brought about by the world switching to renewal forms of producing electricity from fossil fuels.
