Jynx not getting an evolution confused me. Yes, its BST is different than Magmar and Electabuzz and it doesn’t have the same gender ratio, yet it was close to them in the National dex order, even their baby forms that all evolve at level 30. And the rate in which they learn new moves is the same (every 4 levels until level 28) and they’re usually variants of one another. Like them learning the elemental punches of their type at level 28.

They really should keep doing this every generation. Aside from regional variants and the generation's gimmick potentially granting a Pokémon an exclusive form, cross-gen evolutions are the best way to bring older Pokémon back into the spotlight as it gives them the buffs they needed, an awesome design and expands upon an otherwise rather small family. I was legit hyped when they brought standard cross gen evolutions back in Legends, potential caveats aside. And seeing them keep it in SV gives me hope that it’ll stay a staple along side regional variants and possibly convergent species too if they stick around; a healthy mix of the 3 would be nice, like a 2:3:1 ratio respectively. I don’t want them to get rid of any of these three when gen 10 rolls around.

We’ve slowly been working our way back up to Gen 4. First, we temporary forms of different Pokémon in Gen 6. Then, we got entirely new regional forms of Gen 1 Pokémon in Gen 7, before giving us new evolutions to those regional forms in Gen 8 (and to Pokémon past Gen 1). It all came full circle in Hisui, where we got not just regional forms (Electrode & Zoroark) and not just regional form evolutions (Overqwil & Sneasler), but also direct evolutions to regular forms (Wyrdeer & Ursaluna). Hopefully Gen 9 has more direct evolutions in a mainline game (and we already know about Farigiraf, so that’s a great sign!)

Personally i love regional forms for pokemon because its like how real animals will have regional variants like the African vs European honeybee. And its really good to see them given to more than just kanto Pokemon, i think currently a bunch of mons from Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova are probably deserving of new forms. (But I recognize the problems with these forms stated in the video like how Obstagoon makes regular Linoone seem even less appealing because the original wasn't buffed, just given a different form exclusive to some games)

Baby pokemon and cross generational pre-evolutions are great as well. Not only it makes more sense to get smaller forms of huge pokemon to be the ones coming from an egg (I´m still waiting an explanation for onix and tropius XD) but they also make evolution lines feel complete just a much as the cross gen evolutions. And another really important reason why baby pokemon and pre-evolutions are important is because they help to obtain pokemon that you wouldn´t normally find in the first routes of the games. Like, I don´t expect to find Magmar, Electabuzz or Lucario in route 1, but thanks to their baby forms and pre-evolutions you´re more likely to get access to them way earlier. But yeah, mega evolution doomed many single stage and two stage pokemon to never be able to evolve.
@sssspider
@sssspider Жыл бұрын
I mean it would be easy enough to retcon mega evolution to not necessarily require the final stage, kinda like how G-max only exists for the lower stages in some evolution lines. I don’t really know how dedicated Gamefreak is to preserving the sanctity and consistency of a mechanic that they likely have no intention of going back to in the near future.
@EmeralBookwise
@EmeralBookwise Жыл бұрын
@@sssspider: this. Honestly eviolite probably did more to "doom" a Pokémon from ever evolving, because an inability to benefit from it could be taken as "proof" a Pokémon could never evolve by any means. I think it's no coincidences that after the introduction of eviolite in gen-5 is likewise why cross gen evolutions disappeared for the next two generations and even when they returned in gen-8 it was only for regional variants. Because Pokémon like Mr.Rime and Sirfetch'd only evolved from forms exclusive to Galar it sidestepped the question of why the origin Kanto version can't use eviolite.
@sssspider
@sssspider Жыл бұрын
@@EmeralBookwise Eviolite is definitely a consideration. However while held items haven’t been removed for quite a while (a quick Google says it last happened in Gen 4), it would be easy enough to just cut eviolite if they really wanted to go all-in on non-regional cross-gen evos without worrying about how it may unintentionally buff the newly non-evolved base forms. Compared to Dexit, I doubt removing a single item that’s only relevant in competitive to like, 10 Pokémon is going to result in much widespread backlash. However, I think regional forms and evolutions are generally more marketable so there just isn’t much reason to go for straight evolutions.
@TheSpartanS196
@TheSpartanS196 Жыл бұрын
Eh, "many" is a big stretch. First, the numbers: there are 18 megas of stage 2 pokemons, 15 megas of stage 1 pokemons, and 13 megas of basic pokemons. So that's 28 ruined lines? Not really. First, of the basic Pokèmon, 5 of them are legendaries (Mewtwo, Rayquaza, Diancie, Latios and Latias). So that leaves 8 "regular" basic pokemons that may need an evo (legendaries certainly do not, unless they are MADE to be evolved like Cosmog or Kubfu). Of these eight, at least 4 don't need it, either because it would make them too strong (being them already decent) or because it wouldn't make much sense lore-wise or appearance wise. What's evolved Kangaskhan going to look like? A grandma? (Kangaskhan absolutely need a pre-evo though, being her cub, and the cub could be both male and female and have A DIFFERENT male evolution. That I'd be on board with, it would be kind of like Nidoking/Nidoqueen or Gardevoir/Gallade, totally sick. Yeah I know the Nidos are technically different Pokémon, but that's just because back in Gen I sex wasn't a mechanic, if they were made today Nidorans would totally be the same pokémon with splitting evolutions based on sex). Kangaskhan, Aerodactyl, Pinsir and Heracross shouldn't get an evo. Megas were a great middle ground to spice them up, but a "stronger version" with no strings attached would be too much. That leaves Sableye, Mawile, Audino and Absol that wouldn't mind an actual evolution. Absol looks like a completely evolved Pokémon but he needs a power up badly in terms of in-game strenght. Now, the stage 1s. No legendaries of course, but again a lot of them shouldn't get evolutions for any reason. Gyarados, Scizor, Houndoom, Lucario, Abomasnow, Slowbro, Steelix, Sharpedo and Camerupt all either look or fight as final-form pokémons. Stuff like Gyarados, Scizor and Slowbro would be broken since their base forms are already strong, not to mention the fact that the stage 1 would then access Eviolite, and those who aren't broken are still clearly "mature" from a design pov. Also, Megas don't "forbid" new splitting evolutions, as Kleavor shows. That could potentially be the path to be followed (when it makes sense to do so, and besides Scizor and Slowbro which already have them, I can't see the others getting a "new brother". Maybe Steelix, idk, but it would just be easier to give him a regional form, even if Onix stays the same, the way there's no Galarian Koffing but regular Koffings evolve into Galarian Weezing in Galar. But an entirely different Pokémon may make sense if it's not made of metal: let's say there's a population of Onix near a volcano and their regional evo is made of magma, it wouldn't make sense for it to be "Steelix", it would need a different name, idk, Magmix, Moltix or Lavix lmao). It's clear that those stage 1 Pokemons are not "young, growing" animals that don't have access to their full potentials, even if their line has just two stages. If we had to add something and make all of them stage 2 lines, we'd have to insert either a "youngling" stage 1 between the pup and the adult (see Houndour/Houndoom, he goes from pupper to Cerberus) , which is something that they never did, or add a pre-evo (see Snover. It feels like a Stage 1 to me, with Abomasnow being a stage 2, and the basic form... not being there lmao). Stage 1s that wouldn't hate a new real evo would be Manectric, Medicham, Lopunny, Banette, Glalie and Altaria. All of them feel, both from design and in-game strenght, that they could have something above them. So, all in all, just 10 Pokémons were "locked" out of a new evolution because of megas. And if you asked me "would you prefer for those 10 pokémon to get an actual evolution, or the 48 megas that exist?", I'd say it's worth it. Sucks to be them but it's a small price to pay for Megas lol

@@sssspider: oh, I absolutely agree they could just remove eviolite with little to no controversy. It's likewise probably no coincidence that the lack of held items entirely in Legends Arceus also came along with the inclusion of new cross-gen evolutions that weren't tied to region exclusive forms. The fact Scarlet/Violet seem to be continuing that trend with Farigiraf could well mean eviolite has been cut... assuming held items are even returning at all, which I can't recall having been confirmed yet one way or the other.

I kinda feel like the lack of cross gen evolutions was more of a matter of circumstances than anything. Gen 5 didn't have any because the region was trying to be completely disconnected from old pokemon, and then the others were because they all introduced a new way to give attention to old pokemon. Gen 6 didn't do any (except Sylveon) because mega evolution was how they were upgrading old pokemon, gen 7 didn't because regional variants was how they gave attention to old pokemon, and gen 8 expanded regional variants with regional evolutions. And since Legends Arceus didn't introduce a new way to give attention to old pokemon it brought back gross gen evolutions

Cross gen evolution can work so well because from a realistic point of view animals in real life migrate to different places to obtain what they need to continue their life cycle or they react different to some factor from the area they migrate to. I swear its easy to fill the roster with old pokemon by simply giving them a new evolution or the regional variant works well, but the new evolution allows for old pokemon to come back, saving resources from not having to create two New forms, also it just makes the World more Lively and unexpected as a result, like the scope of what the humans of pokemon is small in the vastness of everything.

Speaking of cross gen evolutions, what about cases like Roselia that get both a prevolution & an evolution in the same gen (complete with some egg moves exclusively from the new baby forms & the related upgrades to viability by the evolution) perhaps accompanied by buffing the incense breeding into bringing over that 3+ perfect IVs we get in Undiscovered egg groups (including Baby Pokemon) from XY to the applicable Pokemon?

I still wait for Mega Mawile, Mega Medicham, Mega Heracross and Mega Altaria becoming Cross Gen evolutions in the future. Their designs are just too solid to not use them as a second/third stage evolution and they even could get higher HP Stats that wasn't possible with the mega evolution. Imagine Mega Mawile as an independent Pokémon with Huge Power as its hidden ability.

Cross-Gen evolutions only work if the evolution is an improvement of the past form, both in stats, moves, and design. As much as there are examples of good cross-gen pokemon, there are also those that feel or are wasted space for the 3rd evolution slot. If a cross-gen evolution sucks, it sucks forever after. With regional variants/Evolutions and even megas, bad designs can be bypassed with future gens where those gimmicks or regional forms are not included. So it all comes down to if the evolution is good or not. When it comes to pre-evolved cross-gen forms like baby pokemon, they are always for the cute factor and almost always not useful in battle, just an added step before you can evolve into a form you can actually use. If they made baby pokemon that are more useful, then they wouldnt feel like a tacked on "have to have a baby form of X pokemon cause base form looks weird from an egg" thing.

Idea for a dugtrio evolution: Dughemoth. It follows the same evolution path as magnezone and metagross. Dughemith would just be the 4 diglets in dugtrio forming into one monster mole. It makes sense of the copy paste that makes diglet into dugtrio by making it a transitional stage rather than a final form

Crobat’s pretty much my favorite Pokémon, but I always loved Zubat and Golbat regardless because… bats. They’re my favorite animals. But much life in real life, they didn’t start out with a good reputation despite how cool they actually are. Crobat allowed people to actually treat the line with respect, and it ensured that Zubat and Golbat could keep up with the competition using their newfound blistering speed and currently still unique Type combo. It completes the package. So yeah, with power creep in tow I think other underappreciated and misunderstood ‘Mons deserve a new Evo too. As in, think of how many Gen 2 Pokémon we associate with Gen 4 just due to their Evolutions alone! Maybe we’ll get a Carnvine Evo to throw Gen 4 itself a bone?

Why they phased them out is probably because of something already mentioned in this same video... eviolite. Because of that one hold item GameFreak all of a sudden had to be far more careful which Pokémon got new evolutio, especially already defensive mons. More over, from a lore perspective they would need to explain why a the a Pokémon couldn't previously use eviolite before the "discover" of its evolution. Introducing alternatives like Mega Evolution and regional exclusive evolutions allowed GameFreak to sidestep that question in much the way they sidestep the introduction of new babies through the inclusion of special items needed to breed them. The fact plain old Girafarig is now getting an evolution could also mean that GameFreak will be removing the eviolite item.

1) Really pissed off for even differentiating Luvdisc from Alolomola. 2) A proper evolution for Kantonian Mr. Mime, (through Mimicrizer) to evolve it to Sr. Mime (Senior Mime) to parallel it with the humanoid 4 from Gen 1. The other being Jynx. 3) Use Minajirizer for Jynx to evolve it to Minajynx (I hope Nicki doesn't mind) - Yes this is a joke but I don't mind it coming true. 4) Proper evolution for Kantonian Farfetch'd. My opinion would be, being able to use a Move with one of its legs (like Talon Sweep or Talon Clutch or ANYTHING) and it would be able to hold another leek with its legs making it evolve. 5) And GameFreak, please find a way for Sableye and Mawile's Mega Evolution to become fixed and become real evolutions because THEY NEED IT. (My idea: they become exposed to a certain beam that acts similarly with Sableyite and Mawilite only in two separate caves connected to another dimension) 6) I bet every Pokefan wants to see a complete set of Eevolutions. So please keep adding. 7) Any cross evolutions are WELCOME, not just game specific or regional variations. I can work for free if you have difficulty finding names.

Well, GF already stated why they never wanted to go back to them. When discussing Megas, they mentioned how people wouldn’t like some new evolutions as much, saying they actively made the previous Pokémon worse which is blatantly true because 80% of the Pokémon community doesn’t like or even hates Ambipom, Rhyperior & Magmortar (not me, I love them). They didn’t want to disappoint fans, so they stuck to temporary gimmicks.

Except Mega Evolution ended up doing more damage than good, if not worse than standard new evolutions, due to rather abysmal execution. While some Pokémon like Mawile, Sableye, Pidgeot, Kangaskhan and Abomasnow appreciated their Mega, it went too far with popularity, and too far with power creep within Generation 6.

06:30 I think they keep the Legends: Arceus evolution methods as they are now: transfer mon to Legends: Arceus and evolve it there. It works fine so far: ribbons obtained in later games simply don't show up in Legends: Arceus but appear again when they are back in their respective games. So, you move old Pokémon obtained in newer games back to Legends: Arceus via Home and evolve them there like normal.
