This was supposed to be a dream, when 3rd division Gretna Football Club made it all the way to the Scottish Cup final. A club from a little town of 3000 people, standing up to the MIGHT of Celtic and Rangers, and all of this, despite being a team from the Scottish 3rd division...can you imagine?
A club that joined Scotland football pyramid in 2002 from scratch, and made it all the way to the final in 2006, and qualify to UEFA for 2007.
Through the investments and the financial muscles of Brooks Mileson, Gretna reached unimaginable heights, and through the goals of Kenny Deuchar, or shall I say, Doctor Kenny Deuchar.
Kenny Deuchar was a practicing doctor, while he was playing for Gretna, and it was his goals that fired Gretna all the way through the divisions. With 63 goals in 93 appearances, Doctor Deuchar’s story deserves its own video someday.
Inevitably, they made it all the way to the Scottish Premiership, but this is where Gretna's nightmares began.
A season that promised soooo much to the Gretna Football Club, and its population of 3000 people, suddenly turned into a nightmare.
The rise and fall of Gretna is an interesting story, maybe with an element of romance...but it was doomed to fail from the start.
Unfortunately, the Gretna story goes down as a cautionary tale of what happens if you’re not financially sustainable without your owner.
Fortunately, the supporters trust re-founded the club as Gretna Football Club 2008, and at the time of recording this, they play at the Scottish 5th tier.
