Every wireless controller before the Wavebird used IR as its connection (which needs direct line of sight to the console) but the wavebird was the first to use radio waves instead (which don't need direct line of sight and is much more accurate). Every wireless controller after them used radio frequency, whether Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft.

It was only a matter of time before wireless game controllers would adopt this type of wireless communication technology. The only reasons I'd say it hadn't caught on before was the lack of a standard protocols, which forced manufacturers to have to work around government regulations for radio wave communications themselves (which Nintendo had to do with the Wavebird). Bluetooth solved this problem by standardizing things.
