1980's brought in standardised usable computers to general industry. Sadly, the automation they provided became a reason to end things like the need for a caboose and subsequently the caboose itself. I'm sure there is more to it but I am glad entrepreneurs know the cultural value of the caboose and continue to keep them part of contemporary heritage either as working cars or as museums or as small restaurants.

By the looks needs some TLC I'm sure they will get there going by the enthusiasm Jimmy.

Those trucks are a surprisingly large amount of the car weight, 7-10,000lbs each ... and a caboose usually only weighs 40-60,000lbs total. That's why it lifted off so easily. As for the friction bearings, those were generally phased out in the 1950s. Most railroads no longer allow them at all, requiring all rolling stock to have modern roller bearings.

the beginning of this past week I was in northern Maine by the abandoned railroad trains didn't get quite close enough to see them. old trains are cool this must have been a fun pic for you . we did find a set of train Wheels chassis whatever you want to call them sitting on rails nothing else 70 mi from pavement

Hope they paint it back historically correct and not all stupid for the juice bar. I'm a model railroader and railfan so I guess you could say I'm "passionate" about this kind of thing if that's the correct word.

Jimmy, I moved probably over 50 cabooses in my career, we just moved 5 last fall. They’re making them into bed and breakfast cabins in Athens, Ohio. There is a guy here in Ohio that can give you all of the history on that caboose, he has written several books on them. Contact me if you want his name.

This caboose is from my hometown and I’d love to know more about where the final destination is so I can go visit the juice bar in the future! Can you tell me more? I’m sad to see it leave town but I’m so happy that it will be revitalized and recycled into something fun!

There are many diners that were built from old dining cars as passenger service died out and the airlines took over. That had to cost them a lot of money. Seems like it would have been easier to just build something in the same shape.

1:59 Jimmie if you go back in your original footage to see if you have a better shot of the top plate (the top black placard area of the two shown at this timestamp) there is a notation in the upper left corner of that plate, they call it, build plate I think, where it says "BLT" with a notation beneath it- that is when it was built. I can't read it very well but it looks like it might say '62 or '42… maybe 8-42 or 62 which would be August of 1942 or 1962. If you have a better shot of that in your original footage, maybe post it on your Community tab so I can read it and tell you for sure. Or respond to this comment with a link to it so I can see it. Edit: After consulting the JC website, they do say on their blog it is 1942.

At least tell them to at least try to keep the original n&w logo that is appearing through
