Great video John, thank you for your service, and the two knives I bought from you are still as sharp as the day I received them. I an not an expert on the building of a knife, I went on personal recommendation of a couple of cops that have your knives. A friend of mine looked at one of the knives, (he is a knife guy, I am a gun guy), and he is telling me about the steel you used, thickness of the blade and the edge, and asked me who made it, and that he was very impressed, I thanked him for the technical info,( which really meant nothing to me), but the fit and feel of the knife in my hand, and your Kydex sheath won me over. Keep up the good work and Semper Fi.

This is the guy? Ok. Hi, Achmed is it? Outstanding, I'm Staff Sergeant @#$%&* and this is our interpreter. Now, what happened today is, we were securing this AO when we found what we suspected to be a booby trap IED and decided the safest way to deal with it was to blow it in place with some C4. Umm... Yeah, sorry about your house. Hey Wex! Get a fire extinguisher and put out Achmed's coffee table, would ya? Anyway, the good news is that it wasn't a booby trap IED. We're thinking it might have been a record player. Soo... Sorry about your record player. Here's $6,000. Alrighty, we're good to go then. Welp, good luck Achmed, don't spend it all in one place. SAPPERS!!! Mount it up and move it out! We've gotta nation to build.

Presently carry the Cold Steel SRK in the field and the SRK-C when a bit of concealment is a good thing, like walking my dog at night in the city. Have carried my K-Bar in the field and hiking/camping for more than 40 yrs. Has kept a good edge and have had zero issues. Use an Ontario machete for heavier work in the woods. Keep all your blades sharp. The way things are looking, we may have to put them to use again, sooner than later. Thank you for your service, from one vet to another.

@@richardhatt6541 Oh nice. I've always thought the SRK would be one of the better soldier knives and should be issued. It's inexpensive and can be mass-produced (important from a procurement aspect), decent sheath, pretty tough, pretty light, good at stabbing and cutting. The SOG Seal Pup (was issued some I think), Gerber Strongarm or LMF (also issued some) are also good. Some Mora knives or the Terava Jakaaripuuko would be good to if a "military" sheath option was there.

I boughtght a "Kukri" Machete by "Cold Steel" - a South African company, and I carried it on a number of my hiking and camping trips. After I learned to work with it, - I carried it instead of my small camping axe. It was ideal both for chopping down small trees and for clearing brush, and much lighter than an ax. Its two main cons are the odd, curved shape of the blade, and the 1820 high carbon steel making it a bit of a challenge to sharpen. However, once sharpened, - it would keep its sharp edge much longer than the more traditional machetes, and longer than an axe, and its ergonomic handle and its hand guard made it very comfortable to use without getting tired or worrying about injuring my fingers. Having had plenty of experience with straight edged machetes - I found this one to be superior to straight edged machetes of similar length for multi-functional use, despite its learning curve. Because it also has a sharp tip, - it does have some utility as a self defense weapon against wild animals, even at close range, although I'd definitely prefer a bear spray or a large caliber sidearm for that purpose.

For Filipino soldiers whether Army or Marines, their carry knife as part of their battlefield tools is the bolo knife like those issued to filipino WW2 soldiers. It is for cutting and chopping woods, digging, butchering. cutting coconut fruit(drupe). Filipino bolo used by farmers are longer and wider that it is a small hatchet but it is pointed if not round tip but sharpened.

After a GLOCK m76robust, excellent field knife and excellent Fighter!! it didn't take up too much space and allowed for comfortable carrying on body armor... Great video. I served from 2002-08, and deployed to OIF in 2006-07. I was an aviation ordnanceman and aerial gunner with in helos, and carried several different blades, both fixed and folding. We got issued the Ontario model 499 pilot survival knife as part of our aircrew survival vest. I’ve heard a lot of guys talk smack about that knife, but mine was razor sharp and tough as nails. Some guys, myself included substituted this for a Ka-bar though. Mine rode on my pistol belt with my M9 and spare magazines. I liked this better because the survival vest always got snagged while moving around the cabin or getting out of the aircraft in LZs and I liked my personal weapons on me. I also always carried a good folder, which was either a CRKT M-16-14D, Benchmade 580. These were for the basic tasks of opening MREs and ammo cans, or cutting a jammed cargo strap (which in a landing zone over there could make the difference between getting mortared or not). I also had a Gerber Applegate-Sykes combat folder, which was a great mix between utility and combat efficiency. My unit did a lot of prisoner transports and we carried our M9 and M16 in condition 4 when they were on board. That meant having a good combat knife wasn’t just for show, these were bad dudes and we were always outnumbered and had to protect the pilots if $hit got ugly. The last thing you needed was some AQI savage making a run for the cockpit at 3,000 feet. And yea, helos go down more than people know. It looks like we had a lot of the same choices. Semper Fi🇺🇸

In 1964, junior year, I realized the U.S. gov't. was lying to us wholesale. I chose to not participate. Seems there never was a Bay of Tonkin incident !! I currently buy good quality kitchen knives, clean and sharpen and give them to our local Coast Guard Station guys. In 1971, I worked at Schaeffer refrigeration on Plymouth Avenue in Minneapolis. An old boy there would brag about the Marines EVERY DAY. Said he was blown off a ship at Pearl 1941. One day, I had a doctor appointment and I was 2 hours late to work. He asked me why I was late and I said, "I just went to the Marine recruiter office and signed up !!" He literally almost fell over backward and said, "Well, you're a God-damn fool !!!" But thank God the Marine Corps isn't "woke" as if this presenter really understood what it means.

I volunteered for the Navy in 1972, served 20 years and never carried weapons on duty (I maintained a weapons system, while others kept me safe). But being at least a First Class Boy Scout (Be Prepared mindset), I was qualified with sharp objects. One of my jobs was Aviation Tool Control Petty Officer where I got into "tool kits". After I retired, I wanted a Mission Knives Titanium SEAL TEAM model, but had to settle for a Underwater Kinetics Blue Tang Titanium Drop Point Dive Knife, which I later gifted to a nephew learning to dive. In the 1095 carbon steel knives I've affordable options at CONDOR Tool & Kinfe Co. I prefer a 4mm to 5mm blade thickness.

My own experience for hand to hand fighting the 1918 Trench knife is hard to beat. Carried a, “Buck knife model 120 General model.” Preferred the length of the blade and the superior razor sharp quality, that was easily sharpened, to when it touched the skin, it would cut cleanly, instead of the Ka-Bar. I mean it was to just touch the skin with no pressure and it would cut. The Buck knife was more of a hunting knife, but yes, the Ka-bar is more of the utility knife. When cutting 550 cord used the traditional U.S. Military issue pocket knife or scissors. After my Marine Corps enlistment became a commercial diver and carried a Stainless pocket knife tied to my harness and a U.S. Divers knife tapped and tied to my umbilical line as well as a hack saw to cut through cables or line. Serrated edges cut line/rope the easiest when lines are wet or the line is a poly type or anything synthetic rope. Prefer the serrated edge when working at elevations or diving. Serrations will cut better through any synthetic line in an emergency, even surprisingly much better than the sharpest razor. That has been my experience with knives and different types of rope wet or dry conditions. Although since you mentioned that you are a knife maker, I would like to get in touch later and request if you could make me a knife to my specifications. Aloha and Semper Fi, Marine. 🌺🌸🌴❤️🇺🇸

I was issued that same machete when I was stationed at Ft Sherman at the JOTC. The tramontina is a far superior machete for clearing brush than the gov issue machete. In airborne school a guy gifted me a Colonel Rex Applegate combat folder. . . it was only good for opening MRE's. . .I later gifted it to a guy in my company who admired it. We were issued the M9 bayonet as well and, although it was a very good tool , your right. It was too heavy. I carried an armor piercing tanto chisel point combat knife on my LBV. . .outstanding tool. Put it through a metal wall locker with no damage to the blade tip. I was gonna get a Kbar combat knife, but because of all the equipment I had to carry I opted for the smaller pilot survival knife. It was a very good tool but the leather didn't like the salt water during waterborne training at Ft Sherman. As for folders, the Gerber Gater lockblade with clip point was ubiquitous in my unit as were the old school Spyder Co. lockblade. I carried a gerber gator clip point lockblade and later carried the lighter weight Gerber EZ-Lock. I carried a balisong for opening MRE's and cutting 550 cord but it sucked as a field knife and would've sucked as a combat knife having a thin blade that was held in place by one little pin. . . So got rid of that toy. I then acquired a fix blade Fairbairn-Applegate combat dagger , the improved upon version of the WW2 F/S commando dagger. . .Very good combat knife but sucks as a utility knife. Our most ubiquitous, most useful, knife tool was by far our leatherman multi tool. Back to civilian life: my most used knives are my tramontina machete, LeDuck neck knife, SAK camper with wood saw blade, leatherman multi tool and sodbuster pocket knife.

Just for clarity: The K-Bar USMC knife, and its Ontario twin, do not have rat tail tangs. The tang is a straight extension of the blade, of 9/16" going all the way to the pommel, where it is squared down to 7/16" to fit the slot in the pommel cap. The pommel is secured to the tang with a driven pin. These knives are no frills, MilSpec tools that are robust and well made for the money. Sold rather rough, they can, with 30-40 minutes at any bench, be made razor sharp and they will hold that edge well enough. A rat tail tang is a far lesser construction that tapers as it goes back towards the pommel.

We also carried the D2 Ka-Bar and we ended up cutting those plastic pieces off the sheaths. Fun fact: the strap is secure enough with the friction fit you can carry it inverted. The plastic sheath on the Mk1 Navy is the same way. I loved that little guy.

On my Gerber LMF 2, I take the straps for the handle and turn them around, away from the handle and into the Belt-loop and just connect the buttons there. The straps should then be connected with each other inside the Belt-loop and shouldn't get in the way when you pull out the knife.

Great Video and Very Cool knife Collection! Thank you for your service Devil Dog! I was a Navy Airedale 2003-09 and I have always been into guns and knives and it is very interesting that I have many of the same knives you do. The one that I did not see is the Gerber 06 Auto which was the last knife I got before the Flight line accident that medically retired me because of a severe spinal cord injury that put me in a wheelchair. I was given the USN Kabar with the leather sheath and I have it on display since it was never used but I do have the Kabar 2000/Next Gen KaBar D2 that I used and was part of my gear. I retired my CRKT M16-14D 1*(One Ass to Risk) with Carbon Fiber Handle after 4.5 years of faithful service and I rounded the Tanto edge as well but that blade cut thru an aircraft skin during an emergency that dulled the hell out of the edge.

Brought back some old memories from Vietnam. Broke the tip off chopping blocks of ice in the field, I was a Combat Infantryman, I used a file that we carried to sharpen our Ontario Machetes to round off the blade. The Puma Bowie was a great addition to my issued bayonet, that I never used and we never fixed bayonets. I still have the original leather scabbard that is rotten and held together with twine. It is a classic sheath. Later I carried a solid black knife similar to the Marine Corps K-Bar knife, I still have it in the old Puma Bowie knife scabbard, truly amazing combination to see. Leather doesn’t last in a wet environment like Vietnam. Enjoyed your knives.

It's always a good idea to protect a well made high carbon content blade on whatever Combat/Fighter (These days politely referred to as "Tactical Knives") you may prefer to carry. You may choose to use Parkerizing Solution specifically made for this purpose. Another good option to use for protecting your blade against rusting moisture is Turtle Car Wax. Just wipe down your blade of any dust, moisture, or other debris and smooth on a thin layer of Turtle Car Wax. The do not sheath your blade, but leave it out in a safe and secure place. Allow the Turtle Car Wax to cure and be somewhat absorbed by the blade for a period of 2 days. Then, lightly buff off any excess wax residue and your blade will be protected from moisture and rust for about 6 months of normal use. Do this procedure about twice a year, and your good. Remember, if you have a Stainless Steel blade, this will not be necessary. Also, be aware that high carbonized blade are usually about 15% Sharper than Stainless Steel. But, the Stainless Steel needs no particular protection against moisture and rust. And, Stainless Steel gets "the Job" done pretty well. A surgeon's scale is usually made of 440c Stainless Steel. So, a good Stainless Steel "Tactical" Knife is always cool.

Stainless steel knives definitely need some protection every so often though. They are not immune to corrosion just less prone, hence the stain “less”. especially in environments of military action where they are getting very wet and salty.

I carried a spike shank in addition to various knives. Reason being that it meant defending from inside a foxhole I was less likely to cut myself when drawing the weapon from its sheath if someone were to physically jump into the foxhole on top of me while sleeping or something. I kept it in my hands at all times while resting inside fighting positions in Afghanistan. The shank was constructed from a thick piece of metal wire pulled from a Hesco barrier. It had a handle and a sheath made from a piece of rubber tubing in metal conduit.

I carried a few different versions of the M16 CRKT knives for many years in both military and LEO roles. Also used a Buck 110 (still do when camping recreationally). I just recently switch over to a Benchmade Vector now. Still in a LEO role and it works for me. My fixed blades were a mix of Gerber Prodigy and Buck 120 and 192 Vanguard. All worked (still work) very well in a variety of tactical roles over the years. Not super expensive either.

Great video; very informative. I used to be a scout sniper in a paratrooper regiment of the IDF (I enlisted in 1995), and I couldn't agree more with you regarding the fact that in the field, weight is always a problem. Thus, an infantryman should always see to it that he / she doesn't carry unnecessary, cumbersome weight. Back then, I carried an old K-Bar knife, that my uncle had given me (he kept it from his service days back in the late 1950's). That knife was not very sharp (to say the least), and at the time I had no professional means to sharpen it adequately, but it was sharp enough for whatever tasks we needed to do with it at the field. I dare say that I disliked the blades of some of the knives that you had shown here - mainly the ones that are serrated closer to the handle. From my own experience, I think that a serrated edge is good only for a short while after the knife comes out of the forge, but when it becomes dull it is a pain in the ass to sharpen it correctly - let alone in the field, when you have minimal equipment. So, I never choose a serrated edge if I have a choice. BTW, which one is you in that old photo with the three of you standing with all the equipment? Are you the taller one to the left, carrying the enormous backpack or rather the one in the middle? Anyhow, thanks for the video, and as another reviewer wrote here: Thank you for your service. Way better than what i've seen other guys choose. You kept it combat effective while also staying pretty cost effective at the same time. Which is the proverbial "name of the game" in my experience. Like everyone else I always liked the machete best. Since Ontario got bought out though, if people want one they should prob get one now before the originals become stupid expensive.

Most of what you're going to need a knife for is the menial tasks outside of fighting. A SEAL pup is not a very good knife for any of that and it's not even well regarded by the teams either as much more than a starter knife. If you want one for that purpose look into Acta Non Verba or an Extrema Ratio but even then it will just be dead weight. Anyone worth their salt however carries a Randall or a Winkler.

IIRC, the LMF II was designed as an air crew survival knife. Not a full tang, in case you cut a live wire getting out of a down aircraft. Mine also had a belt cutter. I keep mine in my vehicle in case of emergency, mine or someone else's. In the Navy I carried the Benchmade Styker, still my favorite carry. Also got a Benchmade Nimravus, not the best, but very good. I have a couple dozen early Benchmades. Benchmade was great back in the day, now I cannot bring myself to buy one.

As a product design engineer I'm a bit dubious about the protection from electricity this knife offers over the previous model, they both have insulated grips but metal cross guards that will touch the hand very easily during use (especially if you are rushing and disorientated). The partial tang would prevent conduction to the pommel/bayonet attachment at the rear of the grip which is good but wouldn't it seriously weaken the function as a bayonet by only having rubber/silicone/soft polymer to support the pommel that locks into the bayonet lug? I realise there are two points of contact ( I collect and build weapons myself including guns) but there will still be extreme forces applied to the bayonet handle if used as designed, such as being twisted etc.. I'm honestly just curious since I have never handled either of these two bayonets myself. Cheers!

I've tried out a few knives, even made one of my own. Naturally, the one I made myself was my hands down favorite untill it was stolen off my kit, the Gerber Strong-arm is the only knife so far that has come close to being able to replace the one I made. Similar thing with a small/medium pocket folder. Never gave a go at making my own, but I ended up settling on the Gerber paraframe since they're cheap and I'm more likely to set it down somewhere and forget about it than I am to break it (coming from far too many experiences) I needed an effective pocket folder that wouldn't be missed if I lost it and the perfect fixed blade No one could replace.
