The Last Duel debuts in theaters on Oct. 15. Spoiler-free review by Ryan Leston.
The Last Duel is a gruelling watch and certainly not for the faint-hearted. However, it rewards you with social commentary that's as relevant today as in 14th century France. Alongside some stellar performances from Jodie Comer, Matt Damon, and Adam Driver, The Last Duel offers several bloody, brutal battle scenes and a fierce final duel that's up there among director Ridley Scott's finest fight scenes.

Saw it last night and loved it. The subtext is timely, the writing, acting, and direction excellent. Jodie Comer stands out in a cast of stand outs. Shes well on her way to being quite the starlet.

The issue is the highly innacurate portrayal that Jean didnt love her truly and whilst a brute of a man, di support her. to get away with them pretending he did it for glory, yet having another child and living for 10 years more after the duel with a quip " he died shortly later in the crusades, and she never married again. They had another 10 years and another child

People go on about the helmets being inaccurate, and they're right, but the thing that annoys me is the lack of colour. The Middle Ages weren't grey and brown, they were riots of bright colours, especially among the nobility.

There is plenty of color in the movie even with all the black and greys. Have you been in a Castle? The windows are so small that it's very dark in them. So the color would be subdued. Also, the colors are very grey in winter and that is how winter looks in most places, specially in Europa because it's dark most of the day. And it's also used to build the crushing atmosphere.

But the climate was colder and misty and foggy during October to March of each year . Colours were from dyed wool . Wasnt until trade from china couple of centuries later brought silks and other dye colouring . It was a pretty rough era post dark ages

If you set your movie in France, you either shoot the movie in French, not an option if you want to sell the movie internationally, or you have the actors speak with a English accent, which is considered a neutral accent. This requires a single and yet daunting effort from the audience, to remember that the characters are French! Think you can achieve this feat?😁

@@HUMBLE0BSERVER The actors are using their own accents here, not a "neutral English" -- and French, while a beautiful language/accent, is avoided by Hollywood because of its perceived effeteness. Patrick Stewart, for example, initially tried giving Captain Jean-Luc Picard an accurate accent, until everyone agreed it sounded absurd to Western ears.

The only weird thing was that it was and is very cold in those times and places, but no one was exhaling a cold breath, when it's cold out your warm breath comes out and becomes like steam, what happened there!

most of the film is about the plot of the "who done it" but there's a few action scenes yes. the finale is nothing but action that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

It's unfortunate that the script picks of Ridley Scott are such a rollercoaster, from his great successes... to films like this; essentially a modern day He Said She Said set in the 1400's. A story (sort of) that could be told in 10 minutes over coffee and understood by somebody barely listening. --- SPOILER: By the way, the only interesting detail (not necessarily easy to pick up on) is that the Mother-in-Law set it up so she was home alone because no heir was being produced. Kept quiet, the situation would have worked out to the advantage of all.

You can't make a period piece these days without some 21st century moralizing. Fact is these two boys were at each others throats and they contrived a way to settle it by force in a legal manner. The winner took all and the loser is condemned now to be slandered even hundreds of years later. The woman was hardly the problem here!
