It has been a while since we did an official "update video." The two previous travel vlogs were filmed back in mid-July, and a lot has happened since then. From getting a second look at my pathology to determining whether I have stage 3 or 4 ovarian cancer... we have a lot to learn and figure out still.
Since we last spoke, I've had a CT scan with some interesting results that led to me getting a liver biopsy (results pending). I also learned a lot more about what kind of cancer they think I have, how far it may have advanced, and what my treatment plan will look like after the Mayo Clinic put me up for review on their tumor board.
Finally, I talk about something that is a HUGE topic when you get diagnosed with cancer... HAIR. I started my chemotherapy a little over a week ago, so I am coming to terms with parting with my hair very soon.
Thanks again to everyone who follows along and roots us on. It really does make such a big difference to know we have the support of this community behind us as we face this incredibly difficult battle. ❤️ Jessica & Brian (+ PEEF 🧸)

We are working with a brilliant integrative oncologist at the Mayo Clinic. She is in charge of the dietary requirements for Jessica. If there is any study done on diet and its effects on cancer, she has read it. We will do a video on it soon. But trust me when I say that Jessica is doing everything she can to enhance the effectiveness of the cancer treatment while mitigating the side effects of the cancer treatment. 🙂

Oooh. As someone who works with Radiology I completely understand how confusing and dry those reports are if you don't know all the medical jargon. My dad went to mayo clinic Rochester and they treated his liver with Proton beam radiation. He was the highest protein marker on record at the time. He had weeks to live and the radiation totally killed his tumors. It was so incredible it made me devote my life to it. I'm now in school for Radiation Therapy. You have a hard path right now. But there is something special about the Mayo clinic. I am a first hand witness. I will continue to keep you in my thoughts. 💗

I look forward to your plant based diet information as my daughter has been trying to convince me to go vegan. Carry on! 💪🏻 (I was diagnosed with a very rare ovarian cancer. Psammocarcinoma, a rare, slow growing cancer that responds best not to chemo but rather only to surgery, I was told. ) although, this seems contrary to some of what I have read online. Oh, wow.... to be a survivor of stage 4 cancer and also not a vegan is pretty astounding. The first thing my friend did when she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer 2 years ago was go whole food plant based.... raw vegan for the first year. Of course, we can never be sure why we're still kicking, but she credits her healthy plant diet as one of the reasons she is still here and doing so well. The two lesions on her brain are completely gone.

Gawd…I remember when my case was on the Tumor Board. I received a call from my oncologist after to tell me I had a stage 4 (and not at age two) as my cancer had moved into my lungs. But I’m here, cancer free, 12 yrs later. There has got to be a better name for that process than Tumor Board! It is all a lot and I see the strength you draw from each other! I didn’t mind losing my hair as much as some others do. I HATED wearing a wig and only wore one once or twice. After a couple of weeks, I had my hair but real short and then it just kept falling out. After chemo….it grew back just great. My eyebrows (and other areas where one normally has hair) also fell out. I wore a bit of makeup and I got so many compliments. I really didn’t mind being bald. I think you’re going to carry it off like a champ!

I had a total bilateral hysterectomy, in my case it was a HUGE surgery because by the time my surgery came up my tumor had grown to 22cm. I also shaved my head in support. Now she has stage 4 breast cancer that has metastasized in her bones, mostly her back. Once again we both shaved our heads in preparation for the hair loss. It seems to be the best plan. We had wigs but she never really got into them and mainly wore her covers which were of similar shape to yours. Good luck with your treatment. Just speaking to the emotional turmoil going on, it is so helpful for you both to share the progress. Just this week, the oncologist told us my husband’s prostate cancer has been changed from stage 3 to stage 4 (but shown in Roman numerals). I was devastated and then we got a call about setting up an appointment with life event event planner at the Cancer Center, which had me up most of the night. Thankfully, we met with two other doctors on the following two days, and Dr. Hastings said this is not a death sentence and they have come up with a new plan. It is as if new life was blown into my soul. If we ever get a dog, I am going to name it Hastings in honor of this doctor. This Thursday is our 32nd anniversary, and we are going to get out of Cancerville to take time, as you say, for memories. ❤️

I've often thought that docs should NEVER release CT or MPI or other test results to patients until the doc has spoken to you. It results in a lot of panic, anxiety, googling (which may or may not be correct information) and so on. I wish they would change that. Now she has her hair back , she is minus a leg but her hair is back . I totally understand how you feel as it was my biggest worry that i would lose mine when I had Cancer . I was extremely lucky as i didn’t lose mine . Seeing my DIL have the strength to get through this dreadful time has given me strength if I have to go through it . As rubbish as this time is this time next year it will all be in the past and you will be a stronger person for it . Love and prayers to your and your husband . Wishing you a speedy recovery

Tip when you have to drink either foul fluids or in fact large volume fluid use a straw. 1 reduces taste 2 reduces texture 3 for some reason you can drink more without it being such a chore Small things but anything that helps get it down.

What a wonderful couple! It seems to me cancer is complex on so many levels not just for the sufferer but also the spouse and family. I look at the Brian and see how he is being strong and supportive of Jessica who is the primary concern right now. Yet, I think how much support he probably needs too but can’t get because the attention needs to be focused on his wife. I was a care giver for my mother-in-law who was blind, bedridden and very sick (not cancer). It was draining. I got very little sleep. And had to deal with her emotions and all her care, but because her needs were so great, my needs as a human had to be put on a shelf. It’s just the way it is. It’s not a complaint. So I feel both for Jessica and Brian.

@@kermitandmisspiggyb yes, it definitely takes a toll on the care giver both mentally and physically which can easily be over looked when the one needing care has so many pertinent needs that can not be put off or overlooked. Caregiving is a tough job but to anyone relying on a caregiver please know it is a job we are privileged to do. So don’t feel bad about it. The roles could easily be reversed. It’s just tough all around whether you need the care or are giving care.

I LOVE the hat. You look so cute in it! You recently mentioned that you were not ready to be part of the cancer community, and that SO resonated with me. I remember sitting in the waiting room at my oncologist’s office and looking at all of the (mostly old!) patients. They all looked pale, sick, and exhausted. That was the biggest motivation I could have asked for. I declined all further treatment after my lumpectomy and decided to treat with a WFPB diet instead. (Something my doctors were NOT happy with!). Next month will be SIX YEARS cancer-free. I continue to send love, hugs, and healing light to you both. ❤️❤️❤️

I too, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 21 weeks ago. I understand what u r going thru but I am so sad that you are such a young woman. I’m 65 and all of this is very difficult. My hair was very think like yours. After my second treatment, it came out in handfuls in a few short days until my dear husband shaved it. I cried and felt sorry for myself but now I find it somewhat liberating. I also bought a few different caps as I’m not comfortable in public. I do have one suggestion….The soft slouchy beanies that include 2 large buttons near the ears are very helpful to attach the ever present medical masks we need to protect ourselves against infections. I found it difficult to wear glasses, wear a mask and then put on my chemo cap. Much easier to just attach mask to buttons. Plus my ears no longer get sore when I have to wear mask for long periods of time during treatment. I wish you well and hope for positive results on your journey.

Also, not sure if you’ve reached out to SLOCA yet, but they will connect you with a survivor mentor. My dad was in a similar situation with cancer where they found suspected mets in the lung, but the biopsy was inconclusive so they did surgery to remove the tumor and he is confident that without that surgery things would have turned out differently for him. He’s been cancer free for 10+ years now. It sounds so strange to ask for inconclusive results but I’m with you- it’s not cancer until they PROVE it is. Sending you much love from Oregon. 💛

Got myself a cute rocker chic wig and waited, my hair thinned, did not come out in clumps. My hairdresser found it so much easier to cut and style, said it was almost down to a "normal" amount of hair. Never wore the wig, hat etc, if you didn't know me before chemo you would have no idea I had lost hair. My 5 year old granddaughter wore that wig all the time for dress up so someone had fun with it.

Wow, I am a physician with 50 years experience and I had ovarian cancer a little over five years ago. I’m very aware of my body so I picked up on subtle changes including the day my left leg swelled so much I couldn’t put a shoe on. That’s not normal but other doctors tried to tell me there was nothing wrong. Luckily he has a physician I threatened the doctor And he missed a tumor the size of a babies head but thank goodness it hadn’t ruptured. It did rupture in surgery so I had to do full surgical treatment with three chemo treatments and only the first one it was difficult. I’m a senior and they told me I was gonna die but I told him I was gonna prove them wrong. It makes me mad when doctors medically hex patients! Cancer was beneficial for me because it forced me to make the changes in my diet that I knew I needed to make and as a result I’m much healthier. Believe in yourself, eat super clean, IV vitamin C and hyperbaric oxygen stop cancer and you very likely need vitamin D3 with K2 so your blood level is between 60 to 80 ng/ml. You must keep good kidney function! You can win this battle💖

I have had Ovarian cancer twice. I was first diagnosed as stage 2B. My girlfriend shaved my head for me, but even the stubble came out around day 17, after my first chemo treatment. I was prepared with some nice wigs, but they never felt right on me after my hair was really gone. I never really felt like they fit perfectly. I ended up wearing scarfs during my treatments. I loved being able to switch them up each day, they were comfortable, they kept my head warm, and they were so easy! When my cancer came back the second time, I decided to go without a scarf, wig, or hat. I decided that it was all about my own comfort and I felt confident with no hair! Do whatever makes you happy and comfortable. I love that cute hat in the video! Praying for you and Brian!!
