I was so in love with Mariska as a young teen. Shocking Blue was a Dutch band and she really didn’t speak English. That didn’t matter she was just gorgeous along with Cher. 😍

Her look was so huge while I was in high school, 1969-1970 era, long hair, bangs, heavy eyeliner, mascara out to there and white lipstick. Had a classmate that came to school everyday looking just like her!

I remember hearing this on the am radio in 1970. I was younger than five but I felt the intensity of this song. By the way she said “Goddess On A Mountaintop”

Her accent gives her vocals a really distinctive sound.

When my dad was in the military back in the 70's and I went to high school in Holland One day I was walking with some friends and we heard a band playing so we went to go check it out. It was at a Park and ito our surprise it was Shocking Blue playing there . We had a good time. And it was free to the public

Great song from 1970 unfortunately a one hit wonder in the states. Their from Netherlands I believe. I was fortunate to have grown up in the 60s. 68, 69 and 70 had so many great songs especially one hit wonders.

Up until about a year ago I never saw this music video. But I've heard the song for decades and always thought it was a guy singing it. Imagine my surprise that it was a beautiful woman!

One of the best one hit wonder bands ever. Sadly, Mariska Veres died in middle age, tremendous talent.

Fun fact the original version of the melody was performed by Mama Cass called “The Banjo Song”. You’ll immediately recognize the melody but if you went to school in the USA anytime after 1900 you will certainly have learned a song in elementary school named “Oh Susannah”, which is the basis of this song.

This went #1 Feb 1970. Bananarama’s cover version also went #1 in Sept 1986. The cover is an 80s dance club interpretation of the original. Love both versions. You gotta review them both.

Mel, this is a Dutch band and the lead singer Mariska learned the lyrics phoenetically. She was supposed to say " A goddess on a mountain top." and said a godness on a mountain top. Shocking Blue is from my parents' home country. I can hear Mariska's Dutch accent in her lyrics. This song was a hit!!
