There are only a few more iconic engines than this spectacular four-rotor Wankel-type unit that also managed to bring the 787B first to the finish in 1991 of 24 hours of Le Mans.
It was built at the peak of Wankel era when Mazda had multiple rotary-powered models in the portfolio. In theory, this was a twin 13B engine using only natural aspiration and incredibly high rpm to reach its 700 hp setup. The engine rev limiter would cut off power somewhere around 9,500 rpm, but on an engine dyno the R26B's potential is above 900 hp, upwards of 10,000 rpm.

Mazda chose reliability and fuel economy over outright performance in the 1991 Le mans, and their gamble paid off. The 787B was actually one of the, if not the slowest Group C car at the race with even the old Porsche 962s were lapping faster.

It's also a real problem for rule makers to determine the volumetric capacity of the rotor/s. If you're a fan you say it's tiny if not you can argue its 3X what I would consider the compression/firing volume. Big up the S800 Honda. 8000rpm, four carbs made an MG Midget look prehistoric.

Small addition to the story: The #55 was not the only 787(B) to race during the winning drive it did. Several 787Bs were entered, and even some of the older 787s (non-B). Not all of them finished, but the #55 wasn't the only one left! In previous years you had the Mazda 757C, 767, 767B and 787 all drive together at the same events, until the 787B arrived and became the predominant model to drive in Group C.

What I recall from my RX7 days was being bowled over by the direct and incredibly linear relationship between how far I pressed the accelerator pedal and how far I sank back into the driver's seat back. No piston engine driven car I have ever driven, from muscle car to mini-van, has ever had that oddly linear relationship. And until you experience it, I'm not sure you can fully appreciate how miserably inept the world of piston engines is. I adored my RX7, and profited greatly by rebuilding its rotary engine once, but blew it up because I was young and foolishly didn't grasp the importance of the hard chrome bearing surfaces inside the engine's rotor chambers.
@joewolvey5837

My biggest gripe of turbo rotarys is the non-linear power delivery. It's way hard to stick with the v8's cos the v8's far superior torque curve. In my class, a max of 3 rotors is allowed. And an NA 3 rotor just don't make enough oomph. Not even a crazy PP....

@@yurikz9 incorrect, due to the engines 2 stroke cycle, the engine can't control how much fuel its getting in the chamber. Unlike a 4 stroke piston engine in which the valves above the chamber time a certain amount of fuel as well as the combusted gases exiting the chamber. Rotory engines don't have that, they drink up gas like I drink up soda when I have dry mouth from getting really stoned. Wankel engines are an interesting concept but I wouldn't it recommend if you are looking for efficiency.

@@mro4ts457 We did indeed but you don't seem to know what happened, friend. Wankels weren't banned because they won, they do not 'work too well' and they certainly aren't banned from 'future races' since they have been allowed back in for quite some time now. You see, prior to 1991 the FIA had announced that all Group C cars would have to field 3500cc Formula One engines starting in '91. When the announced was made Mazda had never won a single race (Le Mans or otherwise) with their Wankel prototypes. When 1991 came around it was clear that there wasn't enough time to test said F1 engines enough to make them reliable so the FIA allowed some teams to stick with their older powerplants albeit with some penalties. The forced shift turned into a mess, specially for the top teams which had to deal with a new, not-yet understood powerplant. Mazda stuck with their Wankels for what would have been their final year and capitalized on the chaos. Their 767s and 787s were never the fastest, never the most reliable cars on the grid. So much so that they were allowed to race with a bellow-minimum weight in '91. Wankels have been allowed again for quite some time now but Mazda has 'abandoned' them completely, even for road cars. The 787b deserves credit for winning Le Mans, no doubt, but don't get carried away by it.

@@danilaodatunagem7193The older cars that had previously run under Group C (C2 for 1991) rather than the new 3.5 litre cars were all originally meant to run with ballast to 1000kg, Mazda lobbied the FIA/ACO that they couldn't build a competitive car with that weight (proven by the awful results beforehand) when the race came around Mazda were allowed to run at 830kg. The Mercedes was still much faster even with the weight but oddly proved unreliable, but the XJR12's that won the previous year were 7 seconds slower than the previous year because they couldn't meet the fuel allocation due to the extra weight. The Jags were generally reliable finishing 2,3,4 but never had a chance to compete. It explains why the 787b had such a poor record because it was uncompetitive when the competition were not knobbled. Also, don't buy in to the BS about the car being able to run with more than 700bhp, it couldn't use extra power in short sprint races so it certainly couldn't over 24 hours.

Ya gotta love how in that time period seemingly whenever a car dominated the competition, officials would get soo butt-hurt they'd change the rules to ban that specific vehicle from competing ever again. Sh*t was wild.

The 787B was one of the slowest winning cars ever at Le Mans and there was no real competition in 91. They simply set a displacement limit, that's it.

I still want to make a rotary powered land speed car. Rotary engine, turbos, and a CVT transmission. Since land speed cars are pushed off the line. You wouldn't have to worry about low speed torque. Jut wind out that rotary with a properly 'geared' CVT and I bet it would break some hearts and records

Funnily enough even now, Rotaries are encouraged by LeMans and mentioned in the LMH rules. So it never got the boot.

LOL cracks me up the narrative that people have created for the 787b. It was not faultless, it took them 9 years to figure out how to not blow up the car before 24 hours. It won from attrition, by outlasting the issues that plagued the c11 and xjr. It was significantly slower than these cars by almost 30 seconds. It was an amazing win for a legendary car but let's not bend the truth with rose tinted glasses.

It wasn't banned for good and it wasn't the last rotary at Le Mans. 1995-1996 saw Kudzu DG3, a 3-rotor car in the same colour as the -91 winnin 787B. It was onlye banned for 1992 and 1993 due to FIA mandating 3.5-litre 8-12 cylinder engines in the Group C endurance racing, similar to F1 at the time. Nothing to do with rotary being "too good that they banned it". The Mazda 787B never finished better than sixth in any other events and claimed the Le Mans win by misfortune of others. Cool car, but wasn't banned for good and wasn't banned for being superior.
