Being Australian, I remember this well. I was glued to the news channels, and couldn't believe how SLOW the order was to go in and end it. The team was ready, willing and able.. yet 'red tape' stopped them from acting sooner. What a disgrace.

More likely the fact that initially they thought he had a bomb. You can't storm a building full of people if some nutjob is sitting on a bomb. Probably took them a while to realise that the chance he had a device was bs. As long as a hostage taker is not killing people, it's better to take the time gathering all the intel needed. Saying that though, the police were almost as incompetent as the hostage taker himself.

Most of Australia would agree with your assessment. Having watched it all go down in real time I think you're right on the money. Unfortunately it didn't stop the terrorism police using him as an excuse for doubling down on the anti-terrorism funding and pushing laws to allow the surveillance state we have here now to flourish.

What I like about this channel is the diversity in coverage and storytelling style. The narrator doesn't only cover the people involved in the story, he also highlights key points of the culture and history of the area.

If you don’t critique police response nothing changes. In many of the U.S. mass school shootings police waited while the shooter killed. All the dissection and training of Columbine police failed even bigger at Uvalde elementary school.

I remember this like yesterday. Watching the tv horrified that this was happening in my home town. Screaming at the tv for the police to hurry the fuck up. If it wasnt for the bravery of the hostages there would have been more deaths.

@@DDM_08@DDM_08 The cops in Uvalde Texas didn't traumatize people in a seige lasting almost 20 hours, spray the public with up to 50 bullets, shoot the suspect 22 times and an innocent bystander 7 times. It's sounds strange but Australian police have almost no experience with firearms at all.

The detail and work put into your videos ive always been a fan of and only seen major improvements as time went on.... mind you ive been subscriber to the this is monsters channel since season 1! Right on the spot! I posted something similar on his Sinister channel yesterday. His 3 channels are my go-to, his voice is perfect for narration, voice over. His natural talent is amazing. Too many times to count I have turned to his channels for educational content, calming voice, his humor, honesty, not being fake, willing to just be himself, mental health championing content while going thru the ups and downs of life. I believe I said I'd listen to him narrate an old encyclopedia 😊

I remember being around twelve at the time the Lindt Cafe Siege happened. Mostly because the day after my family had planned to visit the zoo. Which would require us to travel to two hours to Sydney. We still went, though I remember my younger brother and I were extremely anxious while travelling on the train to Sydney and especially on the light rail past Martin Place. So this episode will be an interesting one for me.

I remember when this happened. I was on the bus headed towards the city to buy some MTG cards when I got a call from my mum saying “I hope you’re not in the city”. Meanwhile, I’m 500 meters away from the cafe. My sisters office was literally across the street and they were locked down.

This case highlights the appalling leniency of Australia’s judicial system. It also makes a mockery of our “intelligence” organisations. As an Aussie I find the decisions made with regard to Man’s early crimes contributed 100% to the escalation of his violence. I always wonder why nobody thought to throw a couple pots of boiling water (the only effective “weapon” to hand) on Man early on, bomb or no bomb. I cannot imagine their collective fear though and how quickly it unfolded. 😢

Australia, I love you and I served alongside many fine Aussies... But, boy, did they blow it. He never should have had innumerable opportunities to stay in country. His Australian "wife" should never have been so brutally murdered. He should have been on lists for his so-called "radicalisation". I was on SORT for several years. NEVER in my life have I heard of such passive bullshittery when there are hostages involved and 2 entries. They knew there were no bombs. I'm in complete shock. No, you cannot go in guns-a-blazing but this is pure insanity. My heart goes out to the families who lost beautiful young souls. And, of course, I pray for the healing in every way for the Survivors. Im not totally disagreeing with your conclusion, but I do believe it was religious reasons that gave him the courage to go through with it. He definitely came across as someone who had gone down the Islamist path, had been believing the promises made. Im not sure its correct saying he got the flag wrong, the "shahada flag" is used by many fundamentalist groups as a call to jihad. The shahada is a decleration of faith. When you convert to islam, you recite the shahada. I dont think its common for the fundamentalists to fly an ISIS flag when committing an act, I believe they would carry the flag of Jihad, aka the "shahada" flag. If he did really get surprised or whatever, and say he wanted an ISIS flag added to his list of demands, it might just be that he realied that average people didnt recognise it as something scary. I dont know, Im only guessing. But I do believe he did this for religion, he did totally come across as someone who had fallen down the islamist hole.

First time I've heard this story in its entirety and I am flabbergasted at the incompetence displayed by the "good guys." They were given ample opportunity, a ridiculous amount of time and information to end this situation in a timely and most likely nonviolent matter! What the hell?! This story should be used as a teaching device for hostage negotiations.... "Absolutely EVERYTHING You Should NEVER do in a Hostage Situation!" My God the hostages were successfully saving themselves!?!?

I've been a pretty avid true crime fan since the early 90's, so followed the investigations closely at the time. 36:52 I feel like these points aren’t mutually exclusive. It’s feasible that Man was both using the I.S. name for attention *and* supported their beliefs. Maybe theologic motivation was secondary, but to solely focus on Man’s evident mental illness without placing some weight on the radicalized version of Islam propagated by the I.S. feels non-genuine.

I remember this when it happened. Like many Australians, I was watching it happen and all the questions were being asked. WHY THE HELL are they not going in? It was frustrating and terrifying watching on a screen, I cannot imagine how it felt for those poor people. I have watched several interviews of the survivors and they are just traumatised to this day. What a cruel, cruel situation that no one deserves. May he rot in hell and his thing of a mistress get what is coming to her in prison.

I was a New South Wales police officer (same as these guys) for 20 years. I worked in the Sydney cbd at the time but wasn’t rostered to work this day. The bureaucracy and red tape is real. An absolute cluster. They’re currently losing 50 officers a week. Do not do not do not become a police officer, not worth it.

I'm not police officer material but my sense of justice and fairness is strong. To be held back when you know clearly what needs to be done - with urgency - must be extremely frustrating and maddening. Red tape is no match for a loose cannon with a gun. Your comment is commendable.

I was at work in an office building nearby when we got word there was potentially a terrorist attack. Our building was locked down as no one knew initially if there were multiple threats. I remember being glued to the TV and how horrible it was to have learnt of the deaths when the authorities could have acted sooner to save the hostages

I was in the first week of holidays after finishing year 8 when this happened and safely enjoying a day in the city with my friends, probably about 1km away from where this happened. I remember my internet friends checking in to check if I was safe, this event really was my first experience of terrorism and I think of it as having a marked presence in my transition from childhood into an adult experience of life. Thank you for covering this story, it's a real trip down memory lane.

His paranoia, as described here, immediately reminded me of that displayed by a chap I shared a flat with as a uni student so very many years ago. In Sydney ! And, an Iranian citizen, an ethnic Azeri from Tabriz. To my consternation, & then, fear, he smilingly confronted me one evening with ‘questions ‘ / accusations of me spying on him on behalf of the Australian government. This appalling nonsense came, if I remember correctly, only weeks after he’d approached me to purchase girlie magazines for him.

As an Australian I remember this very well. Everyone was wondering why on earth the police etc were taking so long to do anything, there were all sorts of theory’s about how it should have been handled from the staff throwing hot oil over the gunman to everyone banning together and attacking him. Australians are not used to people with guns so maybe that had something ti do with it, I don’t know. There was a huge floral tribute afterwards. Martin Place is one of the places in the main CBD of Sydney where there is just walking traffic.

Damn, this guy was an absolute joke. Totally incompetent hostage taker, and was treated as such but the 'hostages' who kept on walking out, and also by everyone he contacted to get his message out, or turn the lights off, or get the right flag.... Unfortunately, the police were almost equally incompetent. This could have been neutralised far sooner with less loss of life. I reckon Islamic State were embarrassed by this joker claiming to be one of them.
