Also called POLYOX, this liquid is viscoelastic do it is very long polymer chains meaning it behaves in strange ways.

Preface: Gross story time. I've had two instances that would be similar. One time I was sick and just got a long (about 4 inches) goob come out. Then one time I had a nose bleed in a place I couldn't go and take care of it, so I just clogged it for hours. It eventually stopped bleeding, but when I had time to tend to it I ended up pulling a coagulated chain of blood and mucous from my nose which I felt clear from my throat as it emptied. It was so satisfying but so utterly disgusting at the same time.

You can find an even more everyday fluid that has this property - egg whites. Admittedly it doesn't have quite the same level of wow factor, as I think the proteins in egg white (which I'm guessing are the driving mechanism of the "self pouring") are shorter than the polymers in polyethylene oxide, and so it tends to come out in drips and drabs instead of one long fluid flow. It's also an incredibly annoying property of egg whites too, as they tend to drag the yolk with them whilst you are trying to separate the two for baking purposes.
@evindrews
@evindrews 4 жыл бұрын
That is though the property that makes the egg whites work in baking :)

Egg whites are annoying I had to throw a whole load out because it dragged a yolk in too
@BenjaminMoos
@BenjaminMoos Жыл бұрын
@@bananasstuff3344 Super late hopefully you figured it out in the meantime, when separating eggs, always separate each egg white into a separate bowl before adding to the rest of the egg whites, so that the most you "lose" is a single egg (though you can set it aside and make a scramble or omelet with it instead so it doesn't go to waste.
@ozzieo3517

Albumin is the large, globular protein of egg whites and your blood, of course, whereas PEO is a long chain of ethylene groups, linked up with some oxygen. Think of natural gas with all the molecules in a chain so that it's a heavy liquid, rather than a light gas.

I knew that looked familiar! I had a hard time cleaning that up when someone had stored a 5 gallon polyethelene oxide (the flocking agent) carboy on top of a hot plate at work. The jug melted and the floc was everywhere, in the cabinets of the lab hood, on the floor, and all over the bench. It was like trying to clean up dog drool!

The important point is that it'a not a liquid, it's a polymer. And it's quite obvious that a polymer would act this way due to it's chemical properties. Polymer is basically a chain/net of bounded molecules one to each other, as opposed to water, which are seperate molecules. This is why PEO acts like that.
