Seeing this movie on a 60ft tall IMAX screen is something I will never forget. This movie was too big not to get another release some time again. Hopefully if they do another rerelease you can see it on an IMAX screen someday.

Those Harkonnen arena guards are like spanish picadores. Another little nod to bullfighting. Maybe a subtle hint that the Atredes and Harkonnens are more closely related than you'd think. Whole Giedi Prime / Arena scene is awesome. It was up to cinematographer Greig Fraser who shot the sequence on black-and-white infrared to deliver Villeneuve’s vision. Btw. Paul's Jihad's casualties were 61 billion lives, the sterilization of ninety planets, and the "demoralization" of five hundred additional worlds. Furthermore, 40 different religions were wiped out, along with their followers.

the Harkonnens planet is orbiting a black sun, so with that and their ozone layer, it makes an old school filter on the whole planet, so in the suns rays, everything is shades of blacks, greys, and whites, but away from the suns rays, they have colours... also, Paul's secret name, "Usul", is a word for the foundation/base of a pillar, that holds everything else up, and his war name "Muad'Dib", the kangaroo mouse of Arrakis, is also a constellation that points to their North Star, AkA "The One Who Points the Way", another word for leader, SO, Paul Muad'Dib Usul, AkA "Paul, the one who leads the way, and is the foundation that holds us all up"... that's a pretty powerful name! PS: the blue cloth Chani has, is used to symbolize her love for Paul... look where it is at the very end...

Usul isn't the base of the pillar. It's the _strength_ of the base of a pillar. And in the book there's no constellation. It's one of the moons and the mouse is not "the one who points the way" but "the teacher of boys"

39:40, the blue cloth symbolizes that she is a young Fremen woman in love. As long as she wears it in her hair, it is a sign that she is in love with Paul. Notice where is it by the end of the movie.

14:28, yes when Paul defeated Jamis he inherited his wife Harah and her two sons. Technically Harah was Paul's wife but because he was only 15 or 16 and already smitten with Chani, he never exercised any marital privileges with her. Harah became the nanny for Paul's sister Alia and his son Leto (from Chani). This subplot was left out of the 1984 version and this one. I believe the Syfy channel adaptation may have had her in it.

Honestly I read the book and I completely forgot that Paul had a child. I was so confused cause I just saw his name “Leto” and how he died by harkonnens or something in a comment and I was so confused. There’s 2 Leto IIs haha.

Harah isn't in the Syfy's adaptation, but she was in Lynch's adaptation, albeit in a deleted scene.

Great reaction. The third movie based on Messiah (the second book of the series) will be adapted by Denis Villeneuve to close the Paul Atreides arc of the story. It’s already been confirmed and it should settled Paul and Chani relationship. In Dune part 2 some characters has been dropped and the chronology has been slightly changed, like Alia’s birth who was supposedly 3 or 4 years old at that time : She was the Baron Harkonnen killer in the original story, not Paul. These changes were necessary because of the movie’s duration already longer than the average movie length and because Dune universe is too much dense for a simple diptych. Actually, HBO will soon release a new series about the Bene Genesserit sisterhood called “Dune : The Prophecy” which should be launched in the coming Fall. If you like their weirdness you might be interested to check it… 👍🏼

Denis' adaptation is brilliant, but it does deviate from the book in several ways (such as Chani not having had a baby by the time Paul ascends to the throne, for ex), so several of your questions are right on, Aria. Thanx for saving your viewing to share with us in a very good reaction!

Yeah they completely cut the whole jamis family becoming Paul's after killing jamis they just completely removed the tradition of if a man kills another man in combat the killer takes the victim's family they completely removed that they better not remove the one that fremen born blind or disabled must walk out into the desert alone cuz there too weak n need help to survive in the desert.

On the Blu-ray, in the extras, it is noted there was a 3/4 Eclipse of the Sun, when they were filming in Jordan. So, in a few scenes, you can see the Eclipse (Earth's Moon) by Arrakis's 2to moons. I read the first book when I was 14, back as the D.Lynch film was being made (Which has merit - yet did not have the production freedom and time as D'V's films) I read all six of Herbert's original novels, before I was 18 years. The first four novels are the most memorable, to me, the last two I found to be a drag. The SyFY TV adaptations of the first three novels have many qualities - yet film in the studio in the Czech Republic, with CGI, and imported sand, and backdrops -no comparison of the scope for D'V's adaptations filmed in Jordan, and UAE, and Namibia. I look forward to the adapt of "Messiah" by D'V', yet suspect this will be in a few years. I saw both DUNE in IMAX. This second one, was during a very tragic time for me. My 84 year old Father was suffering from Dementia. He had care, and I did my shifts, with my brother, to aid Dad. This came out in the US just on March 1. I had the day off - yet had fallen on ice, using a snowblower to clear the drive at Dad's house. I went to the Hospital E.R., had 7 cracked ribs, and my left leg swelled and bruised from the impact. I took pain meds, used two cane's to walk -Yet, I was going to see DUNE 2 at the cinema. I came out of the amazing experience, and found my car had a flat tire in the cinema parking lot. Called for assist. My Dad declined quickly, and died five days later, with his two Sons at his bedside. ....I will have this film amid those memories, yet I so admire these two adaptations of the first book. In every life, there is joy and tragedy.

I'm so glad someone else noticed the sudden appearance of goggles as Paul is first riding the sandworm. They're around his neck when he's talking to Stilgar, then they disappear - clearly he's not wearing them as he's running to jump on its back - and then they appear on his face, UNDER his scarf, as he rides. A quibble in the midst of a majestic movie, to be sure.

If you look closely, it seems like he's wearing the goggles underneath the scarf the whole time, but the glass part of the goggles isn't "activated". I assume it's a piece of technology that can retract the covering of the goggles.

@@Berserker976 They're, essentially, ski goggles. If you want to believe Denis envisioned a future where an inventor saw the need for and developed a ski goggle which applies itself, and that such technology became commonly used in rebel desert enclaves, that is indeed your prerogative. The level of detail on Denis' films *IS* tremendous, however, so I doubt it was just a continuity error. I'm going to theorize, "he wanted to see Chalamet's eyes as long as possible during the scene, and probably filmed him putting the goggles on, but for pacing reasons that shot was cut."

@@crabuki1273 Your interpretation is certainly valid, and I'm definitely not going to say that my theory is absolutely correct, but there are two things that make me think it's at least plausible. First, we see him carrying the goggles while talking to Stilgar, but when he's wearing the scarf they're gone. So either That's where the continuity error is, or we can assume he's already put them on. Second, as I said before, look at the sides of his face when there's a close-up shot, you can see the edges of what look very much like the goggles he was holding in the previous scene. And hey, I figure if the Fremen can make sand compactors and advanced water filtration systems, they can probably handle retractable goggles.

One of the few things I dislike about the movie is the inconsistent use of the various Fremen protective gear. Obviously it’s to show the actors faces, but the use is inconsistent. Paul wears a full face scarf when riding, but stilgar doesn’t have to when he is leading the assault on the sardukar. Everyone watching Paul ride the sandworm has no mask even though it seems to be far into the day. In fact I’m pretty sure the Fremen would never just sit out in the open during the day. I’m pretty sure it would be fatal. I think it would be cool if instead, each main character had a unique still-suit design, or a unique scarf color or something. Imagine of Paul had a little simple desert mouse insignia on his cloak, or the atreadies insignia, that would be so badass.

Great reaction. I read the first three books and love mostly everything about these new adaptations. For more great Chalamet performances, I highly recommend dramas in which he plays the lead (The King, Beautiful Boy, Call Me By Your Name).

Nice job. Like you I am re-reading the book again after seeing the movie. Unlike you, I'm old and the first time I read it was in the 60s. I read it again every 10 or 15 years. Chani is not really against Paul in the book as she is in the movie.

Yeah, well now you need to see David Lynch's version of "Dune" to create an "Aria rocks back and forth on her couch, staring vacantly into space, muttering WTF did I just watch??" reaction video. 😁 Basically, that's most people's responses after viewing a David Lynch movie or TV show. LOL!

@@Frequencydead One thing I will say for Lynch, with all his bizarre storylines, is that in many of his best movies and shows (like "Twin Peaks"), he can tap into the deepest, darkest, and most F'd up/primal parts of the human psyche. It can leave you disturbed to your core with scenes that will haunt your dreams for weeks. The evil Bob in "Twin Peaks" is better than many movie monsters because he represents the foul nature of man, and that was aired on network TV! Nightmare fuel.

Thank you - was gonna rewatch this anyway so I'll look with you :) If you're ever looking for another tv-show I can recommend Penny Dreadful that I also just started rewatching, it was even better than I remembered... Victorian era really dark fantasy/supernatural stuff show... it's actually super! Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Josh Hartnet, Rory Kinnear to mention a few of the known actors..

The books need to be read again, i just did. There are important differences with these movies. I must say the TV movie of 2 x 4h30, from 2000 and 2003, (doing Dune, Messiah of Dune and Children of Dune) is much closer to the books, then these movies. The 1984 movie is not bad, but the end part is silly in comparing to the book !

She isn't important to the main plot anyways, just like Chani is supposed to be Keynes daughter which they also dropped completely. My main complaint is instead that they don't explain just how important Stilgar is to all Fremen and why everyone still wants Paul to kill him. The way they did it is a bit confusing IMO.

I haven't read the books at all but from what I understand, what Paul and later his children are doing no matter how cruel or evil or bad is to prevent an even bigger tragedy from happening
