Disney's obsession with swapping and changing everything for no reason is truly unbearable at this point

The biggest problem these remakes always have is that there's no reason not to just watch the original instead.

The worst part about these remakes is the soul being ripped out. All the color and animation was part of the "magic", dare I say it.

The fact that the song "Les Poissons" was not in the movie or even Chef Louis is criminal.

The change with Ariel killing Ursula wasn’t necessary at all. People have said it before. Ursula is trying to shoot her in the animated because Ariel SAVED Eric by making Ursula kill Flotsam and Jetsam. Ursula is focused on avenging her Eels by killing Ariel and it allows Eric to stab her with the ship while she’s distracted. They work together. They didn’t have to give the Ursula kill to Ariel because she was already doing shit!

I will tell you one thing, you will never see Disney race swap a black character for a white one, ever.

The worst part of Disney's live action movies by far, is the sentient animals. My goodness. Talk about a load of swamp ass.

I’m with Alex. What is the point of “censoring” the villain when they may say something that isn’t PC or they’ll say something bad? That’s the point of being a villain. I guess because people will bash the film because a character said something like that, but again, it’s the villain, of course they’d say something bad.

It still comes to mind that the best live action adaptation that disney has ever done was the 101 dalmatians back in 1996 and that the fact that 27 years ago they understood what needed done for it to succeed yes they removed the dogs talking but on the other hand they nailed the movie.

If Disney remakes Tarzan I'm going to be concerned because that's my favorite Disney movie and they really messed up the Mulan remake

The 1989 animation already changed the ending of Hans Christian Andersen's tale. In the tale, the princess falls in love with another princess and marries her, the mermaid becomes sea foam. The tale teaches us that we shouldn't abandon everything for mere illusions and expectations, as was the series' passion for the prince. Disney animations show us that it doesn't matter if we make the wrong choices, we will have a happy ending.

You know what Disney could remake and still fulfill their diversity quota? Atlantis the Lost Empire. Easily could translate to live action.

If it sucked, it sucked. Some reboots were never meant to be made.

This brings to mind that joke about how Hollywood seems to be replacing Ginger characters with black actors in their movies/shows, and its nuts how often it appears to be happening.

The argument about Disney fighting to keep copyright by making these remakes is nonsense. It's not how anything works. They don't own the properties in the first place since 90% of the stories for their films were explicitly public domain. And their versions specifically... The copyright expires when it expires, a remake doesn't change that. And even then, they're remaking films that came out thirty, forty years ago. Copyright expires *seventy years after the author died* . It's hard to say who that author would be, but most of the creatives behind this movie in particular are still alive.

Spoiler. I don't know why they changed it to Ariel, not Eric, who pilots the ship into Ursula. I always thought Ursula was fixated on Ariel and didn't view Eric as a threat, which is what allowed him to go unnoticed. Having it as Ariel, I don't see how Ursula didn't see the ship coming.

I already had trouble getting into the movie with the weird, sometimes creepy CGI and wonky underwater physics. My most immersion breaking moment was when Ariel literally swims over skeletons of merfolk that are surrounding the entrance of Ursula’s lair. She clearly sees them and that’s not enough to scare her away or even give her pause? If I remember correctly, it’s not until she gets inside that she thinks about leaving…. Who is their right mind would ever enter any place, much less one known to be inhabited by a witch, with piles of dead bodies outside!?

Disney classic animated films were beloved for a reason. Respect the source material to earn the respect of the fans. It was a neat idea at first with Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast. Now it has become an embarrassment.

The family thing with Ursula was cut from the original movie, but she's supposed to be the king's sister. She was banished for trying to usurp the throne.

This movie is going to fail miserably. Probably worse than lightyear. It will have legs for a week, but it’s doomed after that. It has to make almost 600 million to turn a profit. It’s not going to make anywhere near that. Toys and merchandise are already being discounted because they can’t sell it. It’s going to be another Disney bomb.

I was fortunate to be taught 2d animation by the lead animator of LMII. A very talented and patient man who somehow tolerated some very loud and violent swearing each time I broke a pencil 😌

The issue with the whole she didn’t have any agency or nuance argument in the original is she already had that so you can’t really use that to support the live action. Not only that but she saved Eric like 2 times in the film prior to the final battle so we can see she’s not a damsel in distress. The main reason changing so much especially at the end is it messes up the story. If Ariel saves Eric at the end than what is there for Eric to prove humans aren’t as bad as trident thinks they are? (Well I should say as bad as they are as you say human are literal hunting down merfolk) without that ending trident has no reason to think you know maybe there is some good in them and make it possible for Ariel to even become human.

Joe gives it a 6 and tries to talk it up but in the spoiler section he has to be reminded of half the shit that went on in it including the ending "Ah shit your right I forgot about that!". If you want to sell this as an above average movie but you keep forgetting bits and peaces, including how it ended then the movies not worth your efforts to talk it up because it struggled to hold your attention to remember these key changes.

So keep watching the originals and pass on the live actions. Done and done!

When we were kids, the first VHS movies that I can remember my mother purchasing for us were E.T and the Little Mermaid. The Little Mermaid was by far our favorite and will always have a special place in my heart. My family is of Caribbean descent and we fell in love Sebastian the Crab. I vividly recall rewinding the song "Le poisson" laughing again and again and again. Nothing can outdo the original and some classics should simply remain so.

The worst part is: *Disney would have made more money with a re-release of the original !* Also, in HISHE, when Ariel meets Eric, she just writes in the sand: I'll get my voice back if we kiss... The end.

Off topic but Just Rewatched the old school spiderman 2 with Tobey and man. That movie was so good, 10 out of 10 for sure. Seeing Peter Parker struggle with adulthood was so real man Love this Show guys

The Little Mermaid was the first movie I immediately rewound and watched again. And it was my parents who suggested it. My whole family watched it again together.

Soooo... Ariel's Beginning (a much better film than the Litlle Mermaid 2 btw) explains what happens to Ariel and her sister's mother and why she is not present in the 1989 film. It also explains Tritons hatred for humans and his bitterness and fear at times. With that said... Them changing certain events around that occur at the end of the movie (as you have described) removes the full circle the Triton comes around to at the end of the 1989 film and his softened heart towards humanity.

Disney should really be doing these movies similar to other live action cartoons like who framed roger rabbit. The CGI companions don't need to look super realistic to make live action remakes work.

Under the Sea was my favorite song from the original film, with the close second as Part of Your World and after watching that sequence, I felt so disappointed even with my already low expectations. One of my beefs with the liveaction (and my main gripe with Lion King) was that it works when it's animated because the characters are expressive and the songs actually correlate with the actions bas it's in sync with the lyrics (and the people involved with them actually give a crap rather than a soulless cashgrab). Halle Bailey is fine but there are times where she felt flat but it can be the director's fault. And Akwafina's Scuttle was annoying and I never found OG Scuttle THAT annoying. And the best of the bad batch for me is no doubt the remake of Jungle Book. If they HAD to make a liveaction film, I want an Atlantis movie. A really good liveaction steampunk mixed with the mysticism of the crystals. The characters are diverse so they don't need to race-swap and I hope they won't think about changing genders too. Heaven forbid they change Milo or Rourke into Mila Thatch and Commander Lyla Rourke.

When Disney runs out of their library, they're make live action Pixar films 😉

I just don't see that point of a 'Live action' that's 80% CGI anyway...at that point, they're just doing an animated film but not as well as they did thirty years ago. The live action remakes can be summed up as "Lesser sons of greater sires." Not because of recasting, but because they lack the creativity and vibrancy of the originals.

The Little Mermaid was literally the first film I ever got hyped for. (I was tiny then).

I grew up in the 90's with two sisters, that said the 1989 movie(which is the same age as I am might I add) kind of has meaning to my childhood. I feel what the boys are saying here with the nostalgia for this film.

It’s funny to me that the closer to a 1:1 copy of the original, the higher the rating Disney gets. And yet in most of the live actions they try to change too much. They have the answers to the test and still can’t get an A

I know its a fairytale but Ariel steering the ship makes absolutely no sense. With Eric it makes sense, he’s a sailor with his own ship and likely has a lot of experience. Living by or in the sea your whole life doesn’t give you the knowledge to pilot large naval vessels. Also Ariel has those princess noodle arms and that doesn’t help lol.

Alex facial expressions or lack there of tells me everything I need to know before a word is spoken.

I agree with the beginning of this video. People using the “grown a** men” excuse to deflect criticism rather than challenge it. Those people show a lack of confidence to defend their arguments.

I think there is some classic animation that cannot be transferred to live action. You cannot give CGI animals human range of facial movement without it being weird. In animation we accept it subconsciously if it is in line with other things. In live-action our brain screams “it’s wrong, look at this human nearby and look at THAT, it’s not how it is supposed to be”.

I love live action Cinderalla. To me that is still the best live action Disney movie to this day.

Ariel's diverse sisters pretty much subtly confirms that Triton is a huge player that has many wives across the ocean which he impregnated. . I'd hate to think that he abandoned them all, or let them all get killed by humans or by other sea creatures. He seems to only mention Ariel's mother If Triton died and the trident can bring him back from being dead ash, then can the same power not be used to bring back Ariel mother? Or perhaps he doesn't want to bring her back? They should have stuck to the original and not kill Triton off because it causes giant plot holes and makes people question Tritons motivations.

Did you know that the ending of the animation, when Ursula is stabbed with the ship is actually ripped from the Call of Cthulhu ending in the book :D. Have they preserved this ending in the movie as well?

Ursula being King Triton's Sister was in the original version of the Disney movie but cut to streamline the story. You can find the original demo version of Fathoms below and some deleted scenes online which went into it.

Huge respect to Joe, Alex & OJ for subjecting themselves to such cruel & unusual torture so that we don't have to and saving us our money in the process. I'm just gonna stick to the original far superior & timeless animated Little Mermaid. Avoid the remake at all cost. Gotta respectfully disagree with Joe on one thing, the live-action Beauty & The Beast remake starring Emma Watson & Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens in my opinion was really great. The performances were excellent, the new additions to the music & lore were very well done. They said they never saw the Cinderella remake starring Lily James, Game of Thrones' Richard Madden & Cate Blanchett, that one was also good. Both the Beauty & The Beast and Cinderella remakes are amongst the better Disney remakes.
