The animated Mulan showed a regular woman who trained and struggled to get stronger. This newer version was OP from the very start. Disney doesn't get it anymore. It's sad.

It's sort of like Disney only understand the most surface level simplistic version of a strong woman. So when they need to show a strong female character it's not about growth of character it's just about a woman with stupidly overpowered abilities

Honestly, I kinda hate what they did to the father's character? It seems like everyone on the internet just lets it slide because there are bigger things to chew on, but for me, a *huge* part of the original animation was that father character, and how he is always supportive of Mulan and appreciates her for her. I think Mulan 1998 is very smart of showing it: father's fondness is never spelled out until that final scene that makes me cry every time it is even referenced, but his smile says everything in scenes he has no words, and the two times he goes off at Mulan that is obviously hurting him no less than Mulan herself. Meanwhile, the movie father explicitly says he failed to raise Mulan the right way, and in the final scene he admits that to Mulan and says that only now that she majorly succeeded in the army he sees how awesome she actually is. It's something that 1998 Mulan would never ever do. I have to assume it's more of a personal thing for me than it is a bad thing for everyone, but for me, this unsupportiveness of the father stings on the same level as making Mulan a Mary Sue, so, basically destroys the whole story.

They turned a beloved strong female character who earned her stripes where hard work and sacrifice make an epic heroes journey. Into a mary sue. Disney deserved their losses.

I just realized that they filmed many of the outdoor parts of the film in Xinjiang, near a couple of the "reeducation camps" there. They even thanked several government agencies that are in charge of the camps near their filming site, lol. Well, I think that about summed up the film.

I haven’t actually watched this new Mulan movie. But in every trailer, picture, promotion and video I’ve seen, mulan looks lifeless, she had no shred of emotion and always has a blank expressionless face. Like not even half a smile. How are we supposed to empathize with that????

The Witch basically stated that she joined the invading horde because it is here only path to attain power....... And yet, she literally is the most overpowered character besides arguably Mulan in the entire movie.....

The change of the Huns for the Rourans (however that's spelled) it's because they /supposedly/ aimed for more historically accurate villans. Cause this Mulan /supposedly/ was more realistic. Despite that /supposed/ point of view, there were no Chinese screenwriters or producers involved, so, according to actually Chinese reviewers, they screwed it up BIG TIME and was even more insulting to the culture than the OG animated version of Mulan.

When I saw the crazy things she did in the trailer i fr said "It's crazy how the animation is more realistic than the live action."

They basically turned mulan into Rey and introduced chi instead of the force. They took away every single aspect of Mulan's character, determination and hard training and replaced it with a "chosen one" storyline. Every movie Disney makes nowadays feels the same and this is sad.

Them not having a rendition of "Make A Man Out Of You" just goes to show me they care nothing for any of these movies and they just are creatively bankrupt and thus cashing in on nostalgia bucks.

So about the arrow, we are expected to believe that an arrow, fired from a warbow, can easily be caught..... While an arrow that was kicked in a very telegraphed way that is impossible to miss and in a speed much lower that an arrow fired from a warbow.. can't?

Original Mulan animated film: A film about a woman proving herself with her own prowess and strength, showing her worth in her own power. Stupid remake: Nah, she's just magic, that's why she's so great. Wahmen power! smh

I'm calling it, next movie is gonna be live-action "Hercules", with no supernatural elements, except for the witch character that wasn't in the original. Meg's gonna be the one to save Hercules at the end of the movie, Phil's gonna be played by Donnie Yen, and there won't be a single dead person in the Underworld. The product placement jokes are still in there, but "updated for a modern audience".

I'll stick the 2009 movie version instead, because that was actually decent.

Mulan 2020: "We are under attack by seven morons!"

I remember feeling very empowered as a small girl after watching Mulan but this... it doesn't make me feel strong it makes me feel insecure and i'm in my 20's. When i was small my self esteem was very low because i wasn't born as privileged as my classmates, i wasn't from wealthy family, i wasn't pretty, i wasn't really talented etc etc. but stuff like Mulan helped me realize i can just *become* who i want to be what resulted with me learning art and languages all by myself in very young age. Now Mulan remakes came out and it did COMPLETE OPPOSITE of what original did - it tells girls you have to be born the certain way or practice since being a fetus to be worth anything, again, they did the exact same with other remakes. It's not female empowerment, female empowerment is showing characters that are human, flawed but still capable of overcoming obstacles because this is something women and girls can relate to. 2020's Mulan is some goddamn personalityless one man army on steroids but always with great hair, good luck relating to that.

Apparently they used the concentration camps in China to film some scenes. I’m researching into this claim now. Disney are mad for charging extra for this. It is incredibly terrible.

Gotta say my least favorite part wasn’t even Mulan. It was the constant 20 cuts in a minute fight scene. Basically every location has a shot with a close up but never has any shots from afar to give you a idea of the setting.

So even Disney plus has micro transactions now? I hardly ever go to the theater because I find 12 euros to expensive, no way in hell I'll pay 30 to watch this from home.

The live action movies can't capture the charm that the animated movies have. The live action characters are so bland and emotionless.

To be fair, the 1998 film got it wrong and used the Huns instead of Mongols. The Rouran Khaganate was the replacement and more accurate enemy of the empire. I do admit that it was my first time hearing of them and I thought they said Rohans. I was like "Rohans, from Middle-Earth?"

I love Alex's excitement when he tells Joe to watch Mulan on Disney Plus. that guy loves that movie so much, and it makes me smile. He is so wholesome and fantastic.
