Leatherwood Outdoors you bet! I’m curious if the rattle snake that was 51 inches so big how come you didn’t keep it? I totally understand about just going out to be in God’s country. When I was learning archery hunting it was a few years before I was successful but I still enjoyed going out. I’m from south east Pa so I enjoy your pa videos.

First off, I did not catch it. I saw it first but my friend caught it and I held it and tubed it. It was up to him to tag it since I technically did not catch it. Plus, it had a bit of scale rot and if we wanted to preserve the hide it would have some scars which wouldnt look nice. Big snake but there are others out there. We dont plan to tag out each season. If we find the right one we are looking for we will use our tag. Its a management preference we put on ourselves.

You see many rattlesnakes there? I live near Tionesta and have never seen one

@@jaymorris9952 - I've only seen three, not including the young one that passed between my feet! I live in Virginia and only get up to fish and hunt. I wasn't able to make it up for snake season this year.

Thanks! I have been bitten multiple times on the boots. mostly by putting my foot in their face haha. rarely to they strike my boot when I am messing with them.

Shame on anyone not killing a rattlesnake. You kill them to keep thier population down. Otherwise your town will become over run with poisonous snakes. Growing up in tioga Pennsylvania we had a rattlesnake round up every year. Everyone pitches in and kills as many rattlesnakes as possible for a day. If you dont they will be all over the place. You have to do it every year too. Rattlesnakes are dangerous if you dont kill them they will breed and breed. They will be all over the playgrounds in store parking lots . They will be in the fields biting horses and cows. Trust me the rattlesnake population needs people to kill them our the population will explode.

What in the world would you do if you were caught out in an area such as that over night without a flashlight or fire ? I say hunt them to extinction and let all the non venomous ones take over. They can do the job just fine.

scale rot is a fungus that affects reptiles and adheres to the scales of the snake. They are rather strong but it more of trying to get them to go straight is the hard part. they show their strength when you pick them up and try to get out. you have to have a good hold on the tube and snake.

I am not sure the actual cause of it but heard that its a disease that is spreading.

Thanks! They are very comfortable boots. Especially the ones we both have on. Some of the guys do spray down for ticks but mostly we just check really good when we are done hunting. The guys feed the snakes mice that they catch. I do not think we will ever see Ron hunting snakes LOL.. Thanks again!

I would prefer not to kill a snake just to prevent scale rot. A snake that big has lived for close to 20 years or more possibly and will travel a great distance to mate and help make more snakes. Plus, its a wide spread disease and even if every snake hunter out there tagged a scale rot snake it wouldnt really do anything. I hope to have a chanterelle video up but time is against me. We will see.

I got into this around 2006 I think. The year before a friend of mine and his uncle were driving around and saw two snakes by the road. he told us if we got permits he would take us to camp and we would go hunt for them. So we jumped on the chance and got the gear to go and thats how it all started.

if your in kentucky you probably have warmer weather longer than us. Give the snakes a bit more time to be above ground eating.

Well.. yep,. that's what i was tryna say, when i stated that we have same terrain only difference is that you're further North than I am. I have read that sometimes elevation can contribute a whole lot to those factors. then again i'm no scientist, just an ol'country boy that luvs & enjoys the outdoors and also i'm guessing that elevation is very similar for our states. The bordering state of Tennessee has some really big rattlers. also have bigger mountains, could that make a difference?The biggest rattler i've caught here; lil over 6ft. and Tenn. seen 8-10ft massive snakes!! I know where several dens are located, one den in mind is under a huge boulder at edge of outcrop and i tell ya i have been standing on it while a few acquaintances were catching: dude the rock felt like it was vibrating due to so many snakes singing. That same place i have witnessed 200 timber,pigmy, (can't recall name of other type) being caught in one time. Not counting all the ones that managed to flee/escape. There are several diff escape routes for them to use at that location. It's amazing to set back and watch weeds part in all directions. As u mentioned; they will attempt to flee instead of persuing someone to attack. So many ppl misunderstand them & are afraid resulting in pointless slaughtering. We use to do snake round ups just to see what was in the dens in particular areas,.. However no foolish/pointless killing ever taken place. Some were kept & sold to a couple area churches that do the snake handling ( i don't agree with but pays well,and money can be scarce in these parts sometimes. NO JOBS!! locally,.. well unless u wanna move to bigger cities like Lexington,KY,.. or Knoxville, Tenn. Small towns are a dying breed unfortunately, as i'm sure you're already aware of this. I'm country thru & thru, so i don't think i'm moving anytime soon. i hate the city! People are Asshoes! i'd much rather take my chances w/ ornery bear, or rattler. lol.. sorry for rambling on so much..

yeah, pa has a decent amount of snakes but not like some of the southern states. The pigmy ratters ( massasauga) is endangered here and only a handful of dens known in the state.
