UNLICENSED BOXING THE GUVNOR

UNLICENSED BOXING THE GUVNOR

3 жыл бұрын

Part 2 of the original Guv'nor documentary featuring the fights of ROY SHAW and DONNY the Bull ADAMS.
Filmed in 1975 by David Vaughn.
Great interview of Roy sorting out his tickets on the day of the fight against Donny the bull Adams. Roy is relaxed and talks about the East end and fighting men like Mad Frankie Fraser.
The footage is owned by David Vaughn and he has given me permission to use it.
Full details of all the fights in Joe Pyle's new book UNLICENSED Who's the GUV'NOR

UNLICENSED - Who’s the Guv’nor
The True story behind the phenomenon of Unlicensed Boxing
The Men - The Fights - The History…
GET READY FOR WORLD WAR 3
THE DISTINGUISHED title of the meanest, roughest, toughest, hardest, most brutal - not to say dirtiest - fighter in Britain will be awarded to one of two gentlemen tonight.
The runner up will very likely be on his way to the infirmary, an oxygen tent, the crematorium, or at least the title role in sleeping beauty.
Colin Dunne - The Sun newspaper (Sept. 11th, 1978)
The above was the write-up by the Sun newspaper’s boxing columnist on the day of the third epic battle between Roy Shaw and Lenny McLean.
UNLICENSED - Who's the Guvnor
Setting the record straight on five decades of the most notorious title in boxing. From its humble beginnings in London's underworld to the associations of the world’s leading boxing promoters. The dark and dangerous world of illicit boxing has created legends and myths, bestselling books, documentaries, and Hollywood movies...
Now! Hear about it from the men behind the scenes….

Despite Adams' and Shaw's genuine dislike towards each other. I am struck by the level of respectful cordiality being expressed compared to today's fighters.

In a fight that both Shaw and Adams said they would be prepared to fight to the death. A bit "particular" to expect the Queensbury rules to make an appearance in a fight that was intended to be a bareknuckle, no holds barred event.

Good bit of footage. The boxer vs street fighter debate you see everywhere is impossible to prove, ive seen crazy comments that Lenny and others would do big boxers like Lewis and Bruno. Silly comments for me as what makes anyone thing boxers cant fight rough and dirty too. a super humanly fit pro fighter/mma vs roughhouse doorman; 1 of them would gas out and my moneys on the pro every time.

My dad, would never have given an interview in those days like this, he was not proud of the fact that he was a very big handful if provoked , he knew Roy very well, he was in prison with Jimmy Smith, he looked after Jimmy while they served time, my farther was well respected by Roy, and likewise from my ole dad, he was looked up to by Jimmy Smith, my ole dad Gerald Harris, Came out of borstal as Suffolk champion light middle weight, and growing up, i never once see him back away from anybody if they were wrong and being aggressive , i remember as a child, Roy shaw coming to see gerry, my dad when i was 6 years old, and hearing the talking when i was in bed, and i remember the conversation they had...... i loved jim, he was a giant of a man with a big heart who loved my old man , has it all gone now, you bet it hasn't, it lives on so behave yourselves !

Remember seeing Lenny on the door, he was an intimidating man to say the least. From what I understand his strengths weren't really on show in the ring. Clearly there were better men with gloves on, apparently though Lenny was best able to express himself on the cobbles so to speak.
