Unpopular Opinion: I actually prefer the love story of Faramir and Eowyn over that of Aragorn and Arwen, even from the books. Wish there had been more screen time given to it in the movies. Faramir is so tender with her, it just makes me melt.

There's more romance in the story of Faramir and Eowyn; it's less epic and more real. The only Aragorn/Arwen interaction is in the Appendices, and it's more removed from the action; also the ending, for Arwen, is terribly sad.

I was going to post this exact comment. For me, this love story is more real than Aragorn and Arwen. I too would like to see more of this in the films, but maybe someday, maybe in Amazon’s series, we could see the story.

Well I wouldn’t say unpopular opinion. A great deal of peoples ideas about this is from the movies. All we got to see was them standing together.🤷‍♀️ They do have a lovely story. But Aragorn had to win Arwen’s hand by proving himself worthy, they loved each other since he lived with the elves, and she gave up her elfhood? for him, to live a mortal life. They both are true love stories.

An unpopular counter opinion: I think the story of Faramir and Eowyn is more human because they are ... well... human. However I do believe the love of Arawen and Aragorn is much deeper. Remember that Arawen is thousands of years old, and Aragorn is well into his Eighties. They have been lovers a very long time by the events of the story. It was tender and passionate in the beginning, then by now has cooled to steadfast and unyielding by the events of the story. It's a time tested and old love that we see sparking anew as the story ends. Arawen does eventually die, but returns herself with Aragorn and later their children to the undying lands through death. I love both stories and I think they are both great examples of relationships at very different times.

When the movies first came out, I remember how sad my younger sister was for Eowyn, that her feelings for Aragorn remained unrequited. When I explained to her that in the books she develops a love story with Faramir, my sister's eyes lit up. I took out the Return of the King and we read their story together. Faramir was just as noble as Aragorn, given his family had been caretaking the Throne for generations, basically being the "ruling family" for that time. Technically Eowyn out-ranked him being the niece of King Theoden and sister to Prince (later King) Eomer, as a Princess. Yet Faramir's gentle and noble nature won over this Daughter of Kings and Shieldmaiden of Rohan

I'm usually someone that doesn't care about shallow romance, nor care about couples. However, there's something about the story of Faramir and Eowyn that made me happy for those two. Two lost souls that found happiness not through death within the battlefield or war, but rather, by healing and learning the importance of life. That someone's worth is not proved by fighting, yet is living with kindness and understanding.

@@christianfarren1179 Morwen of Lossarnach was named for Morwen the mother of Turin, who was named Eledhwen: "Elf Woman" for her dignity and the brightness of her eyes, which rivaled the Noldor who returned from the Blessed Lands. So, in effect, Faramir DID wed a woman of the race of Numenor.
@OreadNYC
@OreadNYC Жыл бұрын
Yes, Eowyn's grandmother Morwen was from Gondor but that doesn't necessarily mean she was highborn or came from Numenorean stock. In fact, it seems fairly unlikely that she was even though Thengel was the heir to the throne of Rohan -- the books suggest that even though Gondor and Rohan are longtime allies, the culture of Gondor is much more formal than that of Rohan and the people of Gondor don't really regard the people of Rohan as being their equals. When Faramir tells Eowyn that he loves her, Eowyn points out that the people of Gondor very well might criticize or at least question him for choosing her -- especially since he's not only highborn but of Numenorean blood and as the son of the Steward could have virtually any woman he wants. Being from Gondor, Morwen would also have known the history of Vidumavi -- the daughter of a chieftain from what later eventually became Rohan who caught the eye of the heir to the throne of Gondor (when Gondor still had kings). Their marriage eventually led to Gondor descending into civil war because the people of Gondor did not consider Vidumavi to be acceptable as a queen and the mother of the heir.

I think it was Faramir's pity that Eowyn said she did not want. Hence his reply. Also, part of her attraction to him was that he was second only to Aragorn in not just the martial arts, but in nobility and wisdom. That is the major defect of Jackson's interpretation of LOTR: he totally missed the beautiful nobility that Tolkien wrote into the characters of Aragorn and Faramir. All young lads should study these two characters (as well as Sam and Frodo) to learn what it is to be true and noble men.

It was one of the many things I disliked about the film, although as LC says time might be an excuse for that. There was no excuse for his worst abortion of the story with the character assassination of Farimir. The entire point of the encounter with Frodo and Sam was that Faramir rejected the ring, showing his greater strength of character compared to his brother and father.
@chizzieshark
@chizzieshark 2 жыл бұрын
@@stephenpickering8063 I don't like the change but agree with it. Jackson spent the entire 'Fellowship' movie establishing how to the Ring corrupts all beings. Then suddenly along comes Faramir who rejects the Ring outright - it doesn't make sense in the context of a movie. It's better to show his reasons for rejecting the Ring as they develop. Having said that, Jackson redeemed Faramir in the Extended Editions. One of my favourite scenes with Faramir is when he speculates about the life of the Haradrim soldier. Wish that had stayed in the theatrical cut.

The love like was shared between Faramir and Eowyn grows into that love between Beren and luthien. It takes a lifetime of mutually dedicated and passionate love, that grows like the fragile seedlings into a mighty and beautiful tree.

I have always loved the story of Éowyn and Faramir... I recently got a tattoo of Faramir's quote from the scene of them in the houses of healing "I do not believe this darkness will endure." just to remind me that any dark times in my life will pass. I'm glad they could both find each other and heal and grow together.

Eowyn will be much happier with Faramir than she could ever have possibly been with Aragorn. (Had it not been for the War of the Ring, it's not at all impossible that Eowyn would have been offered to him as a potential bride anyway since Rohan and Gondor were allies ) For one thing, it's not hard to see that Eowyn by nature is a very emotional and passionate person and the only reason why she initially seems cold is due to circumstance and necessity. Aragorn, by contrast. is actually not that emotional (probably as a result of being raised by and among Elves from such a young age) -- when Aragorn is angry, he becomes rather frosty. Aragorn also doesn't entirely respect Eowyn as a warrior (even though in the books, female Elves can be warriors just as male Elves can) -- Gandalf understands Eowyn better than Aragorn does. Finally, even if Aragorn had loved and married Eowyn, there probably would have been trouble. Even though Eowyn's grandmother Morwen (the mother of Theoden) was from Gondor, Eowyn has neither Elven nor Numenorean blood -- and the last time a king of Gondor married a woman of Rohan (Vidumavi), Gondor was plagued by civil war. From the sound of it, Gondor is an extremely formal society and I doubt that the people of Gondor would really have warmed to Eowyn, even as the Wraithbane. Faramir, on the other hand, is in many respects a "kinder, gentler" version of Aragorn -- every bit as courageous and strong, but with a somewhat warmer temperament than Aragorn has. The books suggest that the blood of Numenor runs stronger in him than it does in Boromir. Once Aragorn reclaims the throne and Faramir no longer rules the city, he has more freedom in his choice of wife -- and he respects Eowyn for her spirit as well as for her beauty, which is something Aragorn can't quite seem to do.

Both understood all to well the wanting and rejection of love from someone close to them! Eowyn with rejection from Aragorn and Faramirs rejection by his own father,the insane steward of Gondor. Both with nothing more to live for than a violent death on the battlefield both found reason to live in love with each other. Their story is both tragic and grand. They deserved each other and deserved to be happy. It is a truly beautiful love story!!

Their story is more meaningful than even Aragorn and Arwen, perhaps because it is more relatable. But my favorite part, and the one I like to imagine dialogue for is the conversation that passed between Faramir and Merry. It shows how much the hobbits became parts of the lives of all the other characters, highborn or humble. Great job on the video. It's nice to hear the Professor's stories told in a way I am sure he would approve.

I wish they'd showed this better in t he films, the time Aragorn spent healing before they rode for the Black Gate should have been significant, as well as the time with these 2 learning to love each other. But I guess you gotta cut something. I just wish they had filmed it so we could see it in the extended editions (or should I refer to them as the only editions?).

It was unnecessary to the overall story. And again the lotr movies were in theaters at a time when it was unpopular to watch a movie longer than 90 minutes and many people wouldn't even bother with it if it was longer than 2 hours. Very true 2 decades ago about. Now a days we love and expect 2 hour movies but most people though they should always be under 80 min. Which was impossible to do the lotr justice either way. Thank God yes for the extended edition being done.
