I've seen the magic flute three times and I'm still very shaky on the plot. I think it may just be a bit confusing.

You are commenting on an adaptation of a classic opera, and if you want the version set on music there is a great movie they made set in the trenches. Was the most sense this story every made to me haha. They're out there!

Try The Magic Flute (2006) directed by Branagh. It is set in WW1 and for me it gives justice transforming all the elements into the world war context such as the dragon replaced with toxic gas, papageno taking care of birds that detect toxic gas, the famous Christmas Truce used as the gift bestowing scene, so much more.

So far I've only seen Carmen get adapted into movies like Carmen Jones, and Carmen: The Hip-hopera.

@@klaraannabraun5719 It's basically a guy saving a princess who is a prisonner (you know the classic fairytale)...But there are lots of metaphors: Sarastro being the Supreme Male, Master of everything and owner of all powers while The Queen of the Night represents the Revolt of Women against the patriarcal supremacy. What's interesting is that the land of Wisdom and Light is only for males (the only woman who got an initiation did because she's destined to be with the hero) and the Kingdom of night and Darkness is only composed of women (the only man in that kingdom is a villain). It's also about social classes: The powerful people all want noble and great things (powers, wisdom, control) while the lower class people such as Papageno just want to find love and having pleasure hence they stay servitors and would never be initiated.

Actually, there's a movie by Kenneth Branagh from early 2000s, I think, that is pretty enjoyable though the lyrics were in fact translated to and sung in English

Excellent observation. It looks like they spent their money on high-gloss film stock and putting lots of bodies on the screen while using CGI technology from the 1990s. They put no effort into conveying a sense of place; even in the outdoor scenes all the extras’ costumes are spotless and no one is sweating. There is no attention to detail. It’s shockingly amateurish filmmaking.

We lost something in film when people stopped embracing the cheese. It's a fantasy movie. They should be about the cheese. The ridiculousness. Suspension of disbelief has been weeding out through grim dark movies and an obsessive need to be 'realistic'. Let things be goofy. Let them be cheesy.

@FoxyWhite I totally agree. Thanks for opening my eyes wider. I just remembered a memory from my youth. My best friend house was in walking distance of a video store. We would purposely walk there and rent the "B" horror movies. Just to get a laugh and enjoy the film. Some of those films we actually found out we enjoy them.

Yeah, I loved that movie as a kid haha. And same, the trailer brought back memories of the movie :D
