Well my English speaking friends, you can forget about guessing what this food is, it is specific to Japan and Korea. It is Konjac. The raw material is Konjac potato. Peel the potatoes and knead well. Then a glucomannan component causes stickiness. Put it in a mold and steam it with steam. Konjac is typically mottled grey and firmer in consistency than most gelatin. It has very little taste; the common variety tastes vaguely like salt, usually with a slightly oceanic taste and smell ( from the seaweed powder added to it, though some forms omit the seaweed ). It is valued more for its texture than flavor.
What was this stuff? In the beginning it looked like sausage gravy that needed more milk.
