I just saw the movie and I laughed a few times. Not because it was intentional by it... It's almost as if you asked a 6 year old little girl in the 90s what she wanted to see in a movie. and..."Princess or Cindarella, singing, sometiing like freaky friday, oh and cats, I love Cats aaaand jump rope!" was the answer and the author was like : "don't say anymore, I got you!" The whole thing was then just garnished with a little toxic femininity and every male role was given more cluelessness than the main actors(who gives a shit about their backgrounds, it is about empoerment of the gilrls, right?) , as always. aaaand the movie was finished. Why did it take so long for this?

Captain Marvel isn't even among the top 10 most popular females in Marvel, that could be an excuse years ago since the most popular ones are from the X-Men (Rogue, Storm, Phoenix), were all with Fox, but not now there's no excuse, even the decision to turn Captain Marvel into a female version of Superman was dumbe since you can literally do the same thing with Rogue or Jean Grey.

Sad thing about this movie is that there are good things in there. Kamala is fun and likeable and she could as well be the main protagonist. Brie is actually kind of okay here - things would've been very different if she acted like this in the original Captain Marvel movie. The whole plot with Carol's "revenge" causing civil war and the consequences of it is pretty good and potent material for exploring how she's viewed and what her relationships are. But unfortunately all of that is wasted.

If this were a D&D campaign, it would have fizzled out by session 2. The session where half the people don't show up, the food is mediocre at best, nobody brought chip dip, and the only drinks left are diet water and non-alcoholic beer. The Dungeon Master has given up trying to come up with plot points and game hooks because he can't even successfully railroad them into the main campaign, and at least 2 of the players don't want to follow the story anyways, preferring instead to attempt to seduce every creature after their successful failure with the buxom barmaid. In truth, it shouldn't have even gone on for as long as it did. It should have been a one shot and then nobody ever speaks of it again.

The answer is blindingly simple. All the MCU has to do is find some of the best old stories in the comics and try their hardest to do a *faithful* adaptation, only changing things to help the page be realised on the screen. You need directors and actors who love the stories and want to do them justice. It's all that is needed. However, it seems that Disney's meeting rooms are so full of activists that faithfully adapting older material has become impossible. They should sell the MCU to someone who wants to honour the original material.

Monica Rambeau's origin in the comics was weirdly dignified. She was an FBI agent from a strong two-parent black family who was inspired by her firefighter dad to go into public service. But now she's a torture-apologist from a single-mother household who got her powers accidentally while fighting to save a torturer...

I believe people are tired of corporations like Disney weaponizing and retconning the essence of who and what the characters are for things like company politics or current year ideologies. I’m not a fan of what’s being done to characters I grew up with and shows I used to enjoy being used as tools for things I don’t agree with by places like Disney for profit. I’m sure many can relate but if taking a break from the superhero genre or just being done with it all in general is what you’ve decided to do then I respect that. Personally I felt like I could see the exact points they were going to have a "The Message" moment, but they edited it out lol. It speaks that upper leadership really has given the cease and desist with virtue signaling in the movies, but they didn't START with that goal in mind so instead we have a hollow movie that is clearly incomplete. So we're basically waiting 1 more year before we actually see a movie coming out that wasn't designed around the virtue signaling, but I don't think it matters tbh. Most outlets and important people in Hollywood are basically just calling the box office failures "Superhero fatigue", conveniently ignoring that it's applying to almost every Disney product with few exceptions. So the reality is that Disney is just gonna shelve Marvel, having learned no lessons other than "people don't like superhero movies anymore".

Part of the problem with super hero movies is they seem to have forgotten what it's all about. Super heros are not cool because of over the top fight scenes but rather the internal struggles. That should always be the first highlight in a super hero movie and if something is on the cutting room floor the scenes around character growth are being cut you're doing something wrong. Secondary characters should be and stay secondary and sub plots or combat stuff should be the first things to disappear. Just about all the spider man films out there do a great job on focusing on the character and his internal struggles. Most of it applies personally to his life and how he has to do the right thing even if it's hard and there are consequences and burdens placed solely on him because no one else can bear them. Those are great movies regardless of CGI or anything else.

As expected, every article about this movie has been saying the same thing. "It’s obvious that audiences have superhero fatigue". Quite hilarious. No, we've just lost interest since they went woke. It has everything to do with the horrendous "storytelling" of these abominations. And the collapse is glorious.
@billjacobs5218 ай бұрын
Well, not just woke; also incompetence. I know they are tightly linked, but this wasn't woke--just bad. The thing Disney has to realize is that if you take away the crying about race and gender and sexuality from these writers, they have literally nothing else to write about besides "space wizard goes zap." Every so often, the woke crowd actually does make something good, like Baldur's Gate 3, but they usually can't get over their hang-ups enough to do that (or lack the talent to EVER do it).

The problem with these movies is that theyre purely flavour with absolutely no substance. Like, what actually is Captain Marvel? What is her powers? The earlier MCU heroes were all fairly simple concepts - a man who turns into a green monster when angry, a rich person with a metal suit, a guy with a lightning hammer etc etc. Is there anything consistent at all about CM's powers and, crucially, limitations? For Iron Man his limitation is that if his suit malfunctions or is unavailable he is just an ordinary person. For hulk its that he can turn back human at any moment. For Thor its that without his hammer he has limited abilities etc. To be honest, I think this is a problem that starts before Captain Marvel. As much as I love Doctor Strange its fair to say his character and powers is a bit more abstract, in his movies its not a problem because they do a decent job of exploring this and the doctor turned Buddhist Monk is a cool change. But they forgot how to add that depth and complexity.

"How does a civil war on the Kree homeworld damage the sun?" Simple. The original script probably had Carol's direct actions fighting the Supreme Intelligence ending up fucking up the entire planet and its sun, but that made her look too much like the genocidal, bloodthristy wrathful demoness that she actually is. So changes were made to the script that instead made her simply an amoral sociopath who inadvertently caused a civil war so the Kree would be partly responsible for fucking up the homeworld instead of a direct result of Carol's actions. It appears that there are limits to the amorality of writers at Marvel studios, or at least they didn't want their star heroine to come up looking worse than Thanos.

It’s crazy cus Captain marvel’s character is just so obviously written poorly. It seems like it’s the thing a lot of pop culture stuff falls victim to. Becoming a business more than a goal or a vision. Started with actual love but has devolved into nothing but a money maker. You see it time and time again, call of duty, movies of all kinds, restaurants going from a local diner to a worldwide business. So many things souls seem to devolve as they become a business. Even we as humans can serve as an example as we have gained our humanity but the more we become driven by individual success, the more we lose the humanity that makes us so special.

What I find funny is that the villain pretty much got away with everything. They didn't give the air that they stole back, or the water, and Captain Marvel reignited their sun. The Kree got to keep everything they took, which makes the movie feel really pointless and Captain Marvel look worse. I mean, it certainly made the scene on the water planet pointless because they just got to keep the water in the end, and apparently it wasn't that big a deal in the first place. Plus, the Skrulls on their home planet were apparently nice and willing to take in new Skrulls the whole time, so Secret Invasion is pretty pointless, that's without even getting to Valkyrie taking the Skrulls away to another place and it suddenly not mattering that the Kree stole their oxygen. Also, why is Kamala Khan moving in with Captain Marvel in the end? That just seems dumb since the house was damaged but not destroyed. It's also pretty dumb how the nameless NPCs were told to get off the ship as quickly as possible by being eaten by the cats, but Kamala's family and Nick Fury don't need to and don't seem in a rush to leave (plus, they didn't even need to leave in the first place). I think that this is easily the worst MCU movie and possibly the worst superhero movie of all time because it just doesn't make sense. I'd go as far as to say that Spider-Man: Lotus is better written than this movie.

In 2008 we had Iron Man. A well known but not exactly top tier hero of what was definitely the lesser in quality of the two leading comic book brands. Played by a controversy covered Robert Downey Junior, this movie probably wasn’t going to do the much for comic book adaptations. Look across the road and you have Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, one of the most masterful adaptations from page to screen of any fictional character, rivaling the intent and respect of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy. And then the movie came out. Revolutionary CGI, a fantastic plot, down to earth characters and set pieces, and one of the best mixes of love-ability, comedy, and flaws in a lead character cinema had seen to date, perfectly portrayed by Downey Junior. It was a success, showing that even goofier characters than Batman could have a solid on screen portrayal. Fifteen years later, the same universe containing the original Iron Man has churned out nearly (or maybe even more, I lost count) thirty movies and half a dozen eight episode shows, with timelines, characters, plot threads, and stories that are incredibly messy and ultimately end up no where, while some how the visuals have gotten worse, the messages have been bought and paid for by modern virtue signaling, and the performances are truly deplorable. Hollywood has died, and there is no better picture of it than the said, decrepit state of the MCU, once just one amazing movie, now a painting where the Artist applied one stroke too many, and decided that he should keep going anyways
@adampkalb8 ай бұрын
Well, I will let this be a lesson to me: Never let modern virtue signalers pay for your films in the short run, when there are not enough of them to make your movies financially successful in the long run. The only saving graces that Marvel has in 2023 are Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 and Season 2 of Loki. I do not think they will "save" Marvel by any means, but for now they can keep fan interest in the present and the future of the Marvel Universe on life support while Kevin Feige looks for better writers to hire for Daredevil and Blade who will be faithful to the source material, and to the earlier series and movie they already made, and while we wait for the 2023 actors strike to end so production on Deadpool 3 can resume at last. But don’t attack me because I liked what I think to be a really good movie (with flaws, don’t get me wrong, but amazing nonetheless). Gosh this is why I don’t comment any more PS : rivals LOTR was a point about the skill of the adaptation- as in how respectfully it was taken from the page to the screen. I would wager that the dark knight and the LOTR trilogy are the best fictional adaptations ever, (if you disagree don’t call me a psychopath or some shit), not the actual quality of the films themselves. People have been burned by Disney/Marvel WAY TOO MANY TIMES; first by increasing prices of its fledgling subscription service that wasn't anything special to begin with, second, by firing Gina Carano for completely UNJUSTIFIABLE reasons, and finally, of course, making woke, agenda-driven, identity politics-infested superhero movies when their past superhero movies did JUST FINE without that garbage being inserted into them EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Fuck 'em. They're getting EXACTLY what the fuck they DESERVE!!

When I first heard the premise for this movie was that they swap when they use their powers, I was hoping they would swap BODIES. That would have actually been interesting and given the actresses a chance to show range by having to play all three characters
@LucasBR7028 ай бұрын
Unfortunately that would require effort from the writters,the director and the actresses
@sigmacademy8 ай бұрын
Also, them wearing each other's clothes would have been fun to watch (and given Marvel MULTIPLE merch opportunities), but then one would have to explain how the clothes swapping would work, EXACTLY.

what marvel did really well in the early phases was they had a different feel for each movie. iron man had a much different feel than captain america movies. besides the first avenger, wich was very much a ww2 movie, the other captain america movies were essentially spy thriller movies. iron man felt like a sleek and futuristic action movie. they all had their own feel and uniqueness that paid off when it all came together in avengers. they have lost that magic

I would also like to add that in that time, Marvel took their time. They wrote scripts that made sense and really got you invested in the character because you spent time with them. Now it's mostly just rushed stuff, scattered across a myriad of movies and series, coming out at an insane pace and you really should see all of it to actually make some semblance of sense. That just doesn't work.

I loved that the Marvels made a flashback to Thanos in the trailer. I know these events are influential in MCU but COME ON, Endgame ended almost 5 years ago now. Marvel seriously can't put their hopes on that phase anymore.

The only bit of excitement was not having any idea what the marvels was to see Thanos and the original crew only to wonder wtf happened to likable characters followed by disappointment to realize the movie looks like shit and there are no significant male characters besides the marvels

The audiences knew far before the first trailer that this movie was going to fail and what the excuses were going to be and who was going to get the blame. Those three factors alone will kill any anticipation for a movie and what's even more sad is that those behind Marvel know this without any shadow of a doubt. Marvel and Disney actually cultivated the apathy they are currently experiencing
@adampkalb8 ай бұрын
Paramount/Nickelodeon experienced this thing of causing audience apathy on themselves even worse with a smaller brand that failed to take off from the start: Wonder Park - metaphorically and literally a directionless franchise. The director was fired for sexual harassment, and the movie was too late in production to hire another director, which is why the end credits have no director in them. The story is an underdeveloped mess, from the characters to the pacing, the tone is way too inconsistent when the serious story and the message about June's grief over possibly losing her mom does not go far enough or take itself seriously enough, and the poor execution of the film killed almost any interest there originally was in its follow-up series, Adventures in Wonder Park. It has produced a full season, but has not yet aired for the public to watch. November 10, 2023, 11:32pm

The movie might do a tiny bit better than you'd expect only because people are a bit starved for movies due to the strike ending not long ago. My wife, for example, loves going to the cinema every couple months. So she doesn't care if it'll be bad because even if it is then she can at least talk with her friends about how bad it was. And as for me, I only really let myself eat junk food on very particular occasions, the cinema is one of them. So I might not enjoy the movie, but nachos, fries, corn dogs...I won't really care what's on the screen. So yeah, I'll go with her.
@jeremyblackmouth33238 ай бұрын
@AlbatrossRevenue that reply was pointless. What you said goes by the premise that no one has been going to the theaters for months now. SAW X came out recently and people went to the theaters to watch that even knowing it was a prequel/sequel type of movie. Key difference between SAW X and THE MARVELS: the audience knew without question SAW X wasn't going to have WOKE crap being shoved down their throat

The MCU was once the golden standard for entertainment. Sure not every movie was a home run, but there were more hits than misses; and even the misses were connected in the overall narrative. Now the current state of the MCU is wandering with no direction, a joke without a punchline. Great video drinker. 🎉
@lennynero6358 ай бұрын
Golden standard in terms of success maybe, but never the golden standard in terms of quality. Their best movie to this date imho is still the original Iron Man.
@kaasmeester59038 ай бұрын
I'm not so sure. Calling the MCU the gold standard of entertainment is a bit like calling Burger King the gold standard of cuisine. Sure, they are people pleasers, and everybody wants a bite every once in a while, but if you keep consuming it, eventually you'll get sick and tired of having the same old thing every day.

Funnily enough, most all praise has been directed at Khamala Kahn and the actress who plays her. For all the shade being tossed out, it genuinely seems like she's a huge fan of Marvel and the characters, and is just awestruck at getting a chance to playing the role. So yeah, if there's a win, it's maybe that Marvel will take a note from this movie, make Ms. Marvel a fun, personable character people can actually get behind, and maybe finally launch a successful series for her. Probably won't happen, but who knows.
