This is actually based on a comic book series. The mask itself is used by different people by story arc, Stanley only being the first person we see use it for an extensive period of time. The people who use it are collectively reffered to as "Big Head" and are actually the _villains_ of the series, as the mask makes people act out their darkest desires and thoughts. Most Big Heads are essentially serial killer and mass murderers, with many of their madcap antics very much being as lethal as one would expect for anyone not able to use toon physics (aka, anyone not wearing the mask at the moment).

AHHHHHHHH YAAAAAAAAS in the comics the mask goes from person to person. After Stanley kelloway gets it. In the animation, peggie is Stanley’s bestie who helps him out a lot and she even apologizes for ratting him out to the mob lol

This whole movie is really a tribute to Tex Avery cartoons, specifically. His style was very surreal and absurdist. The cartoon Stanley is watching at the beginning is one of Tex Avery's most famous shorts: "Red Hot Riding Hood". And, of course, it's actually a wolf in that short, not a dog. That's both because of the Red Riding Hood reference and it's a visual pun on the term "wolf" (in case you don't know, when a man is called a "wolf", it means he's a skirt-chaser). P.S. I, actually, think it was totally in character for Dorian to fall for Tina's ruse. It's very clear that Dorian has always underestimated Tina so, it would never even occur to him that she'd be smart enough to manipulate him.

_"What is happening right now?"_ I feel perfectly sums this whole film up lmao. 😂🤣 Just as whacky now as it was back in the 90s! Dorian's actor Peter Greene has also appeared in _Pulp Fiction_ and _The Usual Suspects_ - maybe you recognise him from either of those?

Of course he won't have seen it if it's good for the channel. Apparently this guy has lived in a cave all his life. Channel called 'Brandon likes movies'.. wall full of DVD's.. yet doesn't seem to have seen any of the most popular films that most of the rest of the world have seen. "First time watching" my ass. What next? "First time watching" Terminator 2 or Home Alone..

Legend has it they scripted this to be a lot more understated but Jim Carrey kept pulling out oversized cartoon hammers, shifting his face into Warner Bros cartoon wolves, and spinning into Tasmanian Devil tornadoes to change into new costumes so they just kept the cameras rolling and figured it out in editing.

In the mid 90's hipsters decided to bring "swing" back in style. But everyone else thought that was a good idea too and that made it go out of style fast! The "Thatsa spicy meatball" line was a reference to this popular 60's commercial: m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hLeYqrGlvpmyYp8.html Best Regards!

I dont know if it was that everybody thought swing was a great style, and that's the main reason it ended quick. As a 90's kid/teen, I just remember there being so many differing styles going on, or starting to emerge in the early to mid 90's, that it was inevitable that some would fade quicker than others. Between grunge rock, techno, hip-hop, rap, pop, alternative, all these musical and stylistic genres exploding at once back then, I just think it was tough to really hang onto one style for very long, and that's still the case these days I think

The Mask was a favorite as a kid. This movie's target audience was ten year old boys. Which was how old I was when it came out in theaters. I had pretty much become obsessed with Jim Carrey after Ace Ventura. A ton of boys my age did. He was definitively the comedy icon of my generation. If you haven't seen "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective", "Dumb and Dumber", or "Me, Myself, and Irene" I'd highly recommend those too. I'd say those are his three best comedies.

This is how The Mask works: It strips away all your fears and inhibitions, and it protects you from consequences for as long as you're wearing it. It grants some reality-bending, too, but it doesn't change who you are. It's always the wearer, it's just who they are underneath, deep inside. Stanley was a shy, timid, kindlyman who was deeply lonely, romantically passionate, very creative, had a good sense of humor, and was fed up with people constantly walking all over him. When he put the mask on, the shyness went away, and he was free to be the him he was inside, to make jokes and do silly creative gags and get petty revenge on people who treated him like crap. Dorian likewise: on the outside, smooth, confident, intelligent, in control and bold, but on the inside he was a violent psychopath who was forever too craven and cowardly to act on his avarice and stand up to Niko or ever show his true colors and far less clever or intelligent than he thought he was. When he put on the Mask he showed his violent psychopathy with glee because the mask was protecting him, but without it he never would have been anybody, and he used it's powers in a completely uncreative and boring way to show he had no intelligence or creativity.

This was back when films mixing live action and cartoon events were pretty popular, like Cool World, Roger Rabbit, Monkeybone, etc. The Mask is basically a living cartoon, so he can do all kinds of crazy stuff.
