Beginning on the Autumn Equinox, Jackie Rose and I shared a poetry advent on Instagram through our stories counting down to the day when we would finally meet in person. Jackie and I have been such good friends for over 4 years now, but until this month we had been limited to texts, dms and Marco Polos. And so now we are enjoying some time together before I fly home to Edinburgh, and we thought we’d love to share some time with you too, by doing a deep dive into the poems that we shared as part of our advent. This is Part One, and Part Two will be shared over on the ‪@Cadyjaxknits‬ channel.
You will find all the poems we discuss in this google doc: bit.ly/3Sk7kIN

Even if my English isn't that good... it's just a gift to listen to you. Thank you for your poem, about the moon. I feel the same. So often I look at the moon and think it is everywhere in the world, seen by everyone. Who will be looking up at the moon at this moment, what thoughts will be sent to the moon. What thoughts, what story... and I feel connected... thank you for this moment with you both. What a gift🙏🏻

Oh my goodness - you two together in the same room doing poetry with us and wearing gorgeous matching (sort of) knitwear! Is this heaven?!

Thank you once again Jackie and Amy! Such a beautiful offering. I needed this so much in this time when the world, our country, and our knitting community seems to be in angst. I must admit I have been feeling a great deal of disappointment and struggling to see the “good” in our human experience. It was so comforting to be reminded to be present and yet step back far enough to see the ocean carving the granite rock, to feel the holding of the moon, to step back 10,000 light years and know everything is made of the same cosmic stardust. Blessings!

This is a great idea I really enjoyed it watching and knitting, then stopping and rewatchlmg some of the ones I really liked. You tube is so full of standard podcasts and this is very different, it fits with the flow of knitting. Talking of flow I really love that you're together and having a obviously such a special connection.❤

Thank you for this. it was a lovely honest discussion between friends about meaningful words. I loved all the poems, but the Charles Bukowski one spoke to me the loudest today.

Thank you ladies so much. I have enjoyed the knitting talk but was surprised by how rich and valuable this conversation was. I have thought of, and taught to little kids - poetry as distilled experience. This was such a lovely thoughtful conversation between friends reflecting on distilled experience and so immeasurably rich. Perhaps it is because I am turning 60, and there is so much change and uncertainty in the world that I have the luxury to now observe, or maybe your perspective and the poems you shared would have been as meaningful were I 20, 30 or 40. But your reflections gave me such pleasure, reassurance and help in finding a merciful place for oneself in the midst of a painful, and painfully beautiful world.

Only 20 or so minutes in and dare I say I'm in love? I'm actually not a fan of poetry, but listening you two speaking them and seeing the camaraderie between you both is just wonderful. The Frost poem touched me very much having had some losses, as we all have, in my life. Thanks!

What a privilege to "sit at the feet" of such modern day wise women. I felt such heart and grace in your conversation and musings on the beautiful poems. It was a lovely respite from a harsh world. Thank you ladies from my heart to yours.

🙏🏽I had a day planned out. While viewing this brushing my teeth, I was directed by my spirit- due to your influence- to scratch it all. New joyful day of going inside, watching and listening again and going inside myself - not knowing what I will end up by opening up. 🙏🏽 28:07

I am really loving digesting this podcast slowly - partly because I have a hideous chest infection, and partly because I really love looking at each poem by myself, taking my time to read them ‘aloud but inside my head’ if that makes sense! Interestingly, when I looked up the e e Cummings poem (as I find his work both incredibly intriguing and compelling but also for often such short poems, incredibly hard for me to pick apart and understand!) the version I found online (someone’s blog so not anything official) has the last two lines as: here) s now - I love that the way e e Cummings plays with splitting up the words so that this version has here’s now/here snow. So much in so few characters!

I can't believe you were in Madison! That's my home town and my Mom still lives there. I was at her house this weekend. It's also funny that Jackie talked about her friend Charlene knitting on her scarf. My Mom's name is Charlene. But she is 80 and doesn't knit😊. I hope you got to explore Madison a little bit. It is really a great city. I hope you have safe travels home. 💜

This was soooo wonderful to listen to - how on earth did the two of you keep such dry eyes for the duration of this beautiful sharing of poetry... I had tears many a time, and it was just wonderful to immerse myself into each poem with you (and with my knitting...)... so many wonderful thoughts and emotions raised during this. It's been a while, but I'm off to pull two of my many poetry books off the shelf to have a re-visit. My mind instantly went to two wonderful poets, Nikki Giovanni, and Gerard Manley Hopkins... have you had the pleasure of either of those? Cheers, Judith 💜
