Merling King, or merling kings? We'll trace the mythology and phenomena of merling kings and deep one hybrid lords, and we'll also hop back to the Iron Islands to separate out the Drowned God mythology from the Grey King mythology to reveal a new truth about ancient Ironborn history.

In regard to cyclical meteors, that is actually a thing! Every now and then our orbit intersects the orbit path of asteroid belts, and meteors are asteroids that enter our atmosphere. So you are absolutely correct, if Martin's world is as rooted in our reality as we think it is, certain periods of time are more "meteor rich" than others.

To further your idea about the Deep Ones hating horses at the start of the stream, we interestingly see the exact opposite it the Dothraki who love horses and hate the sea. We also see the Iron born hating the Weirwoods who as you’ve said previously are symbolically shown as horses like Sleepnir, you can rise into the astral plane. Another great stream guys, cheers 💀🍻

@David Lightbringer homework on Gealic myths. Look up fairy forts they are a real thing mushrooms and all. Elatha is a gray king type he sailed a silver ship that brought the tua de dannan to Ireland(wiki dagda click on link for his dad). Silver ship seems like weirwood ship. He married a fermorian daughter of a king(I think this 1st gen women character was omitted by the monks cus the mom of the oden type is often just referenced as the king daughter) and had three sons dagda nuada and ogma. The dad of Elatha wife was Balor of the evil eye this is were Gorge and Tolken get all the dark lord orc stuff. I think gorge is taking more from Gealic than Tolken seeing as its all the lord of the island before the sailors landed (you will want to add on your ironborn crests episode there so many things that are missed if people just think its a tolken reference). For the Iron born Nuada is want you want to read about in the new grange story he is the husband and the only one allowed in the cave were the River goddess source is and the hazel tree of knowledge is in the cave and the salmon lives there eating hazel nuts. His brother dagda after affair with the River goddess Boann used his magic horn to make a long night so Nuada would not know how much time had passed and that the river godess cheated. So the one who raises the spring god is the Water/dark god brother(samwell comes to mind). Not sure if dagda was after the girl the tree or the fish or if the are all the same the "eating the salmon of knowledge" mabee monks did have a sense a humour. Nuada has a silver pike from the tree of knowlege. All this stuff has big similarities to game of thrones and using Gealic stuff as the sypher I think Gray king is the one who led people to island took a local/magic/water/fishy woman with an evil dad as his bride then 2 sons become Garth the green and the Merling king (Storm god and drowned god) the iron born have an ancient grudge against the Garth the Green cousins and loyalty to the fermorian grandad balor evil eye and his squisher/fermorian ways. The spring god is punished when he wants to marry someone from a clan related to fermoran/squisher the Cair tribe (House tawny fits in here). I tried to make this more a guide a what to reserch then my theory but a simple wiki link might not have you on same track.most the reserch i done is during your vids. If I found a way to decode the story perfer to give you the info then share myself. hope this is helpfull you inspired a theory and I send Back to you. One more thing about the 1st people being inspired by the the iberian Irish connection you have rightly said George could not have known about it as people did not when he started writing the story but a tribe called the cair are in the old legends and history and would have inspired George as a 1st man archtype so look up about cair and the swans(and then look at house tawny again). Wonder if you read it all well I tried you told comment after so you could read. Forgot before but connection for Ironborn Dagda smacks a krackin with his club to the Irish sea but flip map and its where the Iron Islands are. You said before there is people called Morrigan on Iron islands this might not be an authur reference but Dagda's wife or wives are "The Morrigan". If you look at the new grange myth any party that was not happy about the affair are represented in the iron born

Hi David and Tim! @ 16:45 you ask the question "what do the deep ones want" What if it's the oily stone at the heart of winter? And that's why there are "dead things in the water" at hardhome? It's too far inland and too cold for the deep ones to currently get to, and it's creating The Others, who the deep ones would oppose.

“The flame the drowned god brought from the sea” for the people of old seems reminiscent of Prometheus stealing fire from the gods to bring to humanity, which had connotations of technology and intelligence, but also of danger and destruction.

Something that alway bugged me for some reason: I used to think Lizard Lions were crocodiles but they're specifically named as living in Sothoryos and Lizard Lions are described as looking like floating logs so I guess they're alligators or caimans? But then why did they get named Lizard Lions and not alligators, like the Sothoryi crocs have their real-life name? And lions exist in Essos too, not just Westeros I believe, so I think it's just a bit of dynamic naming conventions being used. It makes SO MuCH SENSE, the fortress on Battle Isle in Oldtown first being made out of oil black stone by the Squishers and then the GEotD built their own fused stone fort on top of it. I've always thought it was weird that the Battle Isle fortress is not only made out of oily black stone but also fused oily black stone on top, I used to think it was just the GEotD that built things out of oily black stone but ever since I began watching LML way back, my Third Eye has been opened by the 3 Eyed Crow. The description of the Vale of Shadows just makes me think about the giant Chasm that the protagonists fall into in the 2005 King Kong movie. The pit is so deep and the walls so imposing that it's difficult for light to even reach the bottom, and I'm sure that there are far darker creatures in the Vale of Shadow and the Shadowlands than on Skull Island. You think gigantic crickets, whip scorpions, and worms were terrifying? Imagine the unbelievable horrors that hide in the nigh impenetrable darkness of the Shadow Peninsula. I'm beginning to wonder if the Squishers and their thralls built Yeen and the other sites in the Basilisk Isles, maybe even Battle Isle and Moat Cailin, during the Long Night from all of the meteoric remnants left in the oceans. It would make sense why there isn't more absolutely corrupted places like in the Iron Isles, the Arm of Dorne, and the Thousand Islands which look like the most heavily destroyed impact sites. Perhaps it was done as part of some Pan-Oceanic Empire(™me XD) masquerading as a safe haven for the other sapient species of Planetos (humans, Green Men, CotF, Giants, maybe the extinct species in Sothoryos too??) as a response to the Others' invasion like Tim said. The downfall of that empire was probably caused during or right after the Long Night just like Euron's/the Squishers' new empire will be defeated before the end of the story. I am completely in support of the theory that the Grey King was the first Green Man ruler of a united Iron Islands(/Iron Peninsula?) who had travelled from the GEotD and married both a First Man/Squisher hybrid wife and a normal First Man wife. All the evidence you've talked about points to this being done to appease both the Squishers, who knew that a war with the GEotD over the Iron Islands/Peninsula would be catastrophic for both "nations", and the First Men that weren't complete hybrids and identified more with the proto-Ironborn ideas you mentioned in previous videos.

I’m so immersed and I find this analysis so interesting! Great job Lightbringer and Grey Waste Tim! 👏🏽🦑🔥🐉 However, I’m a bit confused on some parts (I apologize if this has already been discussed and or answered) and need help ;( I don’t get how some of these theories intersect and connect; what’s the Deep Ones connection to the White Walkers? From what I’ve gathered, there seems to be a huge emphasis on duality in George RR Martins A Song Of Ice & Fire? But after watching your videos… not only do we have the White Walkers connected to an ice moon/deity (evil aspect) going to war against the remnants of the Empire Of The Dawn (Targaryens) and their dragons (Fire Moon)…. But we have a drowned God coming into play as well? Assuming there is such a thing as a benevolent god-like force in this series. So it’s a Song Of Water, Ice & Fire ?? I don’t get it! How do we connect The Drowned God with the Nights King/Azor Ahai? Is it through Euron? This Dark Sider of the Greenseers. Make it make sense, please! My brain is hurting over here 😅😆🧠 ⚡️

What about K´Dath on the Grey Cold eastern dessert where even the fearsome Shrykes dare not to approach and which seems to dispute alongside Asshai, Yeen (though unnadressed), Stygai (also unnadressed), Assai, and even perhaps Carcossa and the nameless ruins at Ullos island nearby to the very little that is ever known of Ulthos landmass, as the "most ancient city of the world" having all of those places kinda heavily disputing the title even not properly mentioning it in al! (Just so far only K´Dath and Assai does as that but the other well could be inferred on their own though never ever addresing it Seems that the worship of fearsome crazy outer-deities match the same as Asshai or even pushing furtherly on the same dark Lovecraftian-like lore stuff as the ancient complex background of the World of Fire & Ice of G.R.R. Martin, whchi goes beyond the Deep-Ones alone!!!

@lhadzyan7300
@lhadzyan7300 5 ай бұрын
@@Slechy_Lesh just I know she was able to go into a full travel around the world probably going from the Western Sunset Sea of West Westeros and her ship was seen at Asshai several years later on, very dammaged but that´s all, so indeed it´s very likely she did traveled on unknown lands. However none ever met her back personally so it´s unknown what she met there or if she was by chance still alive and keep owning the ship - it could be someone else using that which came from the unknown regions of the East of the Known World which came into Asshai then, so that doesn´t solve any mystery besides of proving that there is a missing unknown part of the world of Planetos where the unknown East and Western regions met each other but that´s all.

In Dungeons and Dragons there is an event cataclysmic event called the Tearfall, an ancient magic civilization abused magic and either an ice moon or a lot of meteors fell from the sky starting earthquakes, volcanos tsunamis, changes on the seas, changing the climate of the entire world, destroying that empire and giving birth to protodragons born from the meteors, this is a core event for the forgotten realms the main setting for dnd wich exists since 1967. Martin played TTRPG he prefered Call of C’thullu but he also Played D&D. (I posted the same coment yesterday but got deleted, I think it was deleted because I put a link to the dnd wiki page😅)

Plenty of species evolve in the same environment and rely on each other. Flowers rely on bees. Trees rely on birds. It's not that weird for a species to rely on another to reproduce, they just have to have evolved into their current form alongside each other.

Jon Stark raised the wolf’s den to defend the white knife from raiders. Years and years later, the wolf’s den is taken by a group of slaver until they’re driven out by Brandon “ice eyes” Stark. This sounds like a parallel to me of Bran setting Jon free from his wolf body after being stuffed inside Ghost after his death. After all, Jon Stark raised the WOLF’S DEN which is just another way of saying Ghost’s body and then the wolf’s den is set free from bondage by a BRANDON STARK.

Re Tim's point about weirwoods apparently being "fickle" because they can't grow on the Iron Islands and in The Vale, allegedly because the ground is "too stony and loose", it may be that that diagnosis is an assumption rather than a proven fact. Perhaps the _real_ reason why Weirwoods can't grow in those two places is that they can't connect to the weirwood-net, i.e. the underground network of fungi-like mycellum that we assume links the roots of all weirwoods, there. The iron Islands are offshore and possibly sitting on top of a huge iron deposit, and The Vale seems to be an outcrop of bedrock with very thin soil over it and ring of equally solid mountains cutting it off from the rest of the continent. Now it could be pointed out that there are isolated weirwood trees in Westeros, such as the one in King's Landing, however the continent was originally abundant with them and the First Men only cut the above-ground trees down (there's nothing I can recall about them digging the roots out), so it may be that the below-ground weirwood-net still exists and is still connected.

I am late to the game on this video , but a potential reason for the Deep Ones hybridizing could be to alleviate their own population bottlenecks. Small populations can interbred for a while, but that eventually becomes problematic. Different types of animals/creatures have different levels of inbreeding tolerances before it would become genetically damaging. A species that was very long lived, and very ancient would theoretically have everything, including their genetic material would have considerable longevity and tolerances

Weirwoods can grow in the Vale, its just that they can't grow on the granite out cropping on the Eryie. Could the Meteor/Volcano/Naga event that made the Iron Islands break from the Mainland have washed out the soil on the Islands? Then Naga's bones could be the roots of Ygg, that could grow in the formerly fertile(Reaping) islands.

The whole Grey King taking werewoods from Ashai is much like Isildur (I think it was either him or his father) taking the white tree sapling from Numenor, the holy island and greatest civilization of mankind in Tolkien’s mythology. This sapling would become the famous white tree at the heart of Gondor Also, Isildur’s family was leaving Numenor due to the civilization and its king Ar Pharazon (much like the Bloodstone Emperor) being corrupted (by Sauron). Sauron became the high priest of Numenor in its waning days, and Numenor fell from worship of Eru to worship of Morgoth and of evil. This is the story of the fall of Tolkien’s Atlantis. The fall of Numenor is doubtless where George got the idea for the Great Empire of the Dawn and the Bloodstone Emperor as well, the Bloodstone Emperor himself being a combination of the dark sorcerer Sauron and the usurper king Ar Pharazon

Why only thinking about the power fishmens getting by crossbreed with humans? Durrandon Godgrief lived at a place where an ocean raised as well as the First King of the Ironborn. First men were clearly bond to land so they had to adopt to a new element - water. They could clearly get huge advantages by getting closer to a species which is waterbased. Because that give the ability to them to tame the water. And water is resource-rich; fish, pearls, seaweed as well as being a huge road to far places.

Don’t fish usually reproduce by spawning? I don’t think that requires physical contact, just a swim in the milky sea.

I'm still processing this stream, but what do you think about Wyman Manderly's granddaughter being called Wylla? Saw a post on r/asoiaf. Seems there's some link, Wyman being a confidant about Jon for Ned or something. Not that it's squisher-related. But is Wyman under their influence at all?

This may be stupid, but what about Yeen, Moat Calin, Frog Idol etc. being built _underwater_ ,then water levels change? It explains the size/weight of the blocks; underwater architecture! Battle Isle, a Squisher spire to the surface, claimed by dragon lords. If they're older than GreatEmOTD. Too absurd?

Could it be that the rhoynar were unaffected by the squishers because they were protected by the giant turtles? Could that be why they are important to the rhoynar?

i been looking thru google at the art since you told me, so i know you have a lot of theories and you probably have already made one about what im about to say, but it seems to me, that much like our own, ALL the histories of westeros and essos are interconnected. Specifically the Green Men (Leng and Isle of Faces) and The Grey King and Deep ones, and why i say that is mainly the manderlys, He is definitely part squisher, but the Knights of the Green Hand throw a whole other wtf to the equation. im still trying to figure how the green men and deep ones are connected ancient relatives or like the fire and ice equivalent of fire wights and ice wights you got two diametrically opposed sides of the same coin with Earth an Water, it would make sense to have a group that protects both. Green Men and Deep Ones. idk ive praised a lil too much Garth and typed a book in comments im am so sorry bro. THANK YOU for all your work! @@DavidLightbringer

Strong Belwas is another big strong dude with gappy teath. He hates horses. Love to kill and eat meat. He doesn't feel pain as other people, because he let them cut him. He doesn't die from the poisoned locousts. He's a pitfighter like Biter and the other kids in King's Landing. He's a eunuck. Is that a thing conected to Squishers?

I'm starting to think that maybe the Deep Ones are all female, rather than male. For a few reasons: first, so many stories are about merMAIDS and taking a mermaid to wife, and the water power coming from the women. Second, it's something interesting GRRM would do make it so that instead of women being taken by the men to breed, it's the other way around. Also, it kind of makes sense with the "salt wives" and "rock wives" in a way. If there are a lot of women, all you need is one guy to get a lot of you pregnant to make a whole bunch of new hybrid babies. The Iron Born just got mixed up about who their leaders are because when you keep seeing the MEN be taken, perhaps that means they are the powerful ones. And it also goes with the fact that in the thousand isles, it's the women with more fishy features with their sharp teeth! Lastly, though, is the "how did they evolve to NEED humans to reproduce?" Well, perhaps they are an asexually reproducing spieces that realized the benefits of reproducing sexually include more genetic diversity (and all the cool evolution stuff we can't get into now). But, basically, all the creatures that can both sexually and asexually reproduce have the females as able to basically clone themselves. Much like the Others are all clones of each other!
