We're finally out on The Island and the ice is like a mirror! We take the mini electric airboat out onto the ice and give it a thrashing!
We cover some of the most popular questions we've been asked, doing speed runs, ice - water - ice transitions with one, and even two people onboard, a bit of a range test in real world conditions, and some cool manoeuvrability testing!
Grab a beer, put your helmet on, lean way back in the sofa, and enjoy the video!
And by the way, we love communicating with you, so drop your comments below, we read and answer everything!
And of course, we are super thankful if you can give us a big thumbs up, and subscribe!
/John & Jack

Very cool! Maybe look into a product called "SLICK STRIPS UHMW" by eplastics. You could apply it to the boat bottom to reduce the area of contact with the ice, lowering resistance, and yet it would be unaffected when it reached the water. Love watching the progress of electric airboats.

Hi @Aussie2u! Great point, and we have looked at the possibility of using UHMW, or even making a hull in UHMW, the strips seem like a fantastic product! The reason we haven't gone down that path yet is due to the issues with micro plastics ending up in our environment when they get scratched off the bottom of a hull made in plastic. This still doesn't mean we won't utilise plastics, yet for the moment we are looking at "all metal" (aluminium) constructions, so that the products are fully recycleable at the end of their life. Stay tuned for the developments, thanks for watching and commenting! Regards John

John, may I suggest welding aluminum runners out of 3”x4” channel or use angle to make a v shape welded on both edges of the angle. I would make the cut of the runners on a 60° angle tapering toward the inside on both ends and cover the cuts with flat pieces to keep from filling with dirt / trash. Your aluminum should have a minimum thickness of 0.125” of 6160. Do you have any idea the cfm output of your fan ?

Fantastic guys! Just subscribed, plus hit thumbs-up... I agree with Aussie2u regard applying a polymer to the bottom of the hull. In Lake St. Clair's "Flats", we have a ton of thick phragmites (as you do) and cattails, bulrushes, and other assorted above-water plants. We also have very narrow dredged (and natural) passageways through these plants called "highways" and cuts. How about doing a video demo of your airboat going through these plants in both open water and frozen in ice? Lastly, how about a demo in deep snow and over "chunky", overlaid ice and sharp-edged ice ridges? Thanks in advance!

@johndehosson 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @onnieracar! Much appreciate thee comment, the subscribe, and the thumbs up! KUDOS! We'll be sure to check out the points you made. I actually went around to an area with a heap of chunky, overlaid, sharp edged ridge ice the other day, which a large freightboat had caused. I looked at heading into it, but decided not to purely because I was a long way from home, and on my own! But we will do a video with this for sure! I think the polymer is a great idea, and we really need it. At the moment, we are trying to stick with the aluminium hull due to the lifecycle/environmental aspect of things. The biggest hurdle with the polymer is themicroplastics that are released into the environment. But we're working on hull design etc. to overcome this as much as possible, but may use a combination in the future. Nice to have you keeping up with the channel! A big thank you! /John

Awesome build, I can't wait for batteries to get lighter, hold more power and become cheaper. This will be the norm in the near future. Any thoughts on removable batteries or matching output on a generator for extended range?
@johndehosson
@johndehosson 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @MycoolMakes! Very true, battery tech is progressing extremely quickly! Even the battery we have been using now is "old tech"! A generator would not be able to produce energy quick enough to give charge to othe battery so that it could be used to extend range. The only option here would be to have a hybrid drive system, which in turn has other challenges, and would not be a wise investment. The battery we use is removable, and you can also add further battery packs to it to increase range. As you point out, the cost is becoming increasingly competitive. If looked at as "Total Cost of Ownership", batteries/electric is so much cheaper than TCO of a comparable airboat driven by fossil fuels. Cheers for the comment, hope to have you watching coming videos! /John

I am currently in the process of building an airboat and came across your channel and was wondering if you would share some information about your build or if you could make suggestions about my build? My build is a lot larger and will need a lot more to power it.

You should bolt some metal bed frames on the bottom to keep it from sliding across the ice and it would track better in the water and put wings on the thing and it could be a ground effect vehicle too. A pivoted canard in the front for pitch control with fold up short wings in the back with ice skates attached to the bottom of the wings and an ice skate in the front that would be attached to a long set of bicycle forks that you could pull up to drop the front ice skate to the ice for front wheel steering ? Hmmm, come to think of it if I had wheels on the end of the wings it could be part land yacht too. Gotta get across the desert to see that mirage of water somehow. Hydrofoil skates ? ⛸️ 💧✈️ 🏜

Hi @Cody Warren! Cheers for the message, Jack and I really appreciate you dropping a line! Get in touch with us via the website, www.marsons.se, and we'll get you organised. We'll have final pricing for the ktis within a couple of weeks. We've done a range test in one of the videos. The new production battery will have about twice the range, so will be good for 1-2 hours of normal "stop-start" usage, conditions and speed pending. Regards John

I'm ready for the plans. I know the disclaimer. this device is for entertainment purposes only, this device should not be used to push, pull or power any other equipment for the purpose of propulsion. How much cost do have into the build? P.S. There is no way I would have been standing so close to that thin ice.

What's your run time on a charge?
@johndehosson
@johndehosson 2 жыл бұрын
Hi @Zachmac! You hit us with the hardest question to answer! There are a whole bunch of variables, such as, type of ice, snow on ice, water, wind conditions, etc which are going to play part in answering this question. A bit of a pointer is at the "16:19 - Outro and range". We drove about 21kms on around 50% of the battery. The ice was phenomenal, but there were gusty head and tail winds. We did a few speed runs, some ice-water-ice transitions, one/two people in the hull during this time. In ways all of the above were pretty normal usage conditions, bar the ice, which is seldomly this good. From there, it would be reasonable to expect that in harder "normal" conditions, the battery would give around 30kms, but this could be much less if conditions were wors, eg with a lot of snow, or a lot of headwind. Hope this helps. /John

Hi Mike! A fair bit! The R&D makes it impossible to put a price on the components. The kit that is coming is however priced competitively, due to larger order quantities. Regards John
