Here is a great golf distance drill you can and should be doing anywhere. This really is the missing piece between the pros vs amateurs golf swing. This means you need to be doing this constantly so you can learn do swing like a pro and increase your distance.
There has to be a reason pros hit the ball so long. They are not super human and there are even petite pros that can hit the ball a long way. To get more distance you need a different golf swing. You need to get your body moving allowing the club to follow.
This golf distance drill will help you learn that missing piece. Once you start doing what pros are doing you won't believe how far you can hit the ball with an effortless swing.
So watch this tip and start doing this golf distance drill right now and as much as you can until you are doing it in your golf swing. The more you repeat it the faster you will learn the missing piece and hit the ball longer than ever.

I did this today in the net, my hips and lower back are sore now, because all I've ever done is HIT THE BALL with arms! Definitely made some great contact, but boy is it going to take some hard work

Glad you are getting the body moving. You may feel it for a bit cause you have never rotated that much. This will go away in no time. Just be careful not to go full speed. It's new and different. Build it up over the next days/weeks.

@@paulwilsongolf very kind of you to reply Paul. I hit a few on the range today and it was much easier. Driver for the first time too, not much distance but I was taking it easy. 4H 5W and Driver all seemed to go well but using less arm effort. I'll keep going till I can get that belt buckle at the target. Thanks for the encouragement

This trully is next level stuff!.....kind of last piece of puzzle im working on...yes comes easier wth driver then irons.....very much a timing thing....coordination....and needs daily work to perfect....but when it all jives....the ball flies!.....for me the secret is making the arms passive like ropes just whipping through following the body with major acceleration with minimal effort!....since driver longer...get more success....but i see success coming with irons too...just more variables with irons!...i can hear the strike &compression of the ball....and so can my mates!.....every day i work on the things addressed in this video!...KEY!....the coordination will come with repetition.
@paulwilsongolf

"When it all jives....the ball flies!" Not bad. Almost rhymes. Yes, powerless arms. Rope Arms. Just have to want to do it and keep doing it all of the time. Problem is people get it for a minute then go back to trying to hammer it again. For more power you just speed up the lower body.

Great tips. Most weekenders really do not do a full back swing such that they are eager to thrust their right shoulder out and do a horrible slice. If we do an easy full swing, we naturally have to turn lower body first or one will lose balance with right shoulder intruding outside.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Glad you like them. The shoulder is coming out due to hitting hard with the arms. The less you try to hit the more you would have to use your body because that is the only other power source you have. Unfortunately them temptation to hit is great.

Yes, it is difficult for most because they have never done it. Glad you see it and are working on it. In this tip I say it takes co ordination. So how do you get more co ordinated at it? Answer: you repeat it. Others try it a few times and hit some bad shots so they quit. Really? This is a move pros do. It takes work. If you don't get it on the first day keep doing it. It might be day 12 before you get it. 12 whole days of work to get a move only pros do. Seems like a small price to pay.

To me it's like cracking a bull whip if you ever done that. Try cracking a whip with stiff tight arms? You can't do it. When he's says at 4:58 quick move with hips first but the arms need to be turned off before you make that move. Great tip for getting speed.

Bodybuilders are tough to teach. You really just have to have a clear mental picture in your mind and understand that if a skinny little 12 year old can hit it by you then it can't be about strength. Keep working on it and memorizing the feeling you have now. This is the way you need to keep doing it. Keep in mind I am not patty caking it. I am really firing my legs. They move my body. My body moves my arms. So I am getting satisfaction in the shot it's just not in my arms. So think leg press not bench press.

And that is the reason why the many comparisons with other motion sequences do not hold up (throwing stones, hitting a hammer, etc.). Because with those movements there is no separation between the upper and lower body. Even pole vaulting, which is considered to be the most difficult sequence of movements, does not have this problem. The separation of the upper and lower body is the reason why the golf swing is so complex. Thanks for this explanation.👍
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 3 жыл бұрын
Well the reason is the ball and human nature telling you to hit the ball. Golf is the only one with a stationary object. This means you have to tell yourself to do it which makes it difficult. If I threw the golf ball at you you would be scratch.

Thanks so much. Your body is an axis. The whole club is mass. Turn the axis faster the mass moves faster. It's that simple. Think weight on a string too. The club is the weight. Arms are string. Hand is your body. Turn your hand faster to make the weight twirl faster. Simple.

Excellent workout! But I find that it is easier to change the stubborn muscle memory with body coordination. First, use eye contact to trigger the start the foot turn for hip rotation. Stare at the right right foot, and make the eye to drive the foot movement first. Eye, foot, hip, shoulder, finally arm. Second, use music to coordinate the sequence of motion. Start with one, two for the up swing and three for foot. It takes the attention to sound to drive the foot to initiate move of the hip. The above will build up a quick muscle memory change. And it took two months to help me to switch the motion sequenced. Final drastic effort! Move the hip all the way then start the down swing. Use slow motion. It is the most effective counter arm first method.

Hi Paul. What gives the club head speed. Is it a combination of the arms and hips. I just saw you move the hips and club stayed up top. What brings the club down. Does you arms stayed glued to your sides. Thanks
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 2 жыл бұрын
You get the clubhead speed from the body firing, loose wrists, amount of lag, arc, path, angle of attack, solid contact etc. So no I am not hitting with the arms to get power. The I fire the body and allow the club to follow because it's connected to my body. Watch: Body Swing Concept: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e56pbM123r-XZZ8.html

Great Vid! Paul tells you the truth, but something you may not want to hear. I find Pausing at the top is critical to separation/disassociation, still working on it!
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 3 жыл бұрын
The pause is a great way to feel it. I call it a hesitation at the top waiting for the lower body to drag the club the other way. Tough for most people if they come to a complete stop up there so hesitate which gives you time to think about the lower and get it moving.

I would love to see the flight of your ball in the air. Do you have any videos with a shot tracer?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 3 жыл бұрын
I have one somewhere. The shot tracer takes too long to edit with the tips plus it does not track it properly. You are basically editing the flightpath in the software. This whole process takes time which I don't have. Here is the process. Shoot the tip. Cut the swing. Take the swing import to an ipad. Open the software. Figure out the path. Make sure it is accurate. Export the shot. Take the shot and add to the timeline with the original footage. Export. See it's a lot of work plus when you shoot the shot you need plenty of room in the sky to add the path. This means another camera shooting a more wide shot. See what I mean. My crew is me and my assistant. So we just don't have time.

@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 3 жыл бұрын
That's why pros do it and ams don't. It takes understanding, practice and co ordination which I keep stressing in this tip. There is also timing involved between the body and the release. So if you are (push) slicing it the body is working but your wrist hinge is not timed for driving the lower that hard. So you work on the release first. Get it hooking. Then you fire the lower this hard. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a8V_Y6tjtrSqn2Q.html remember what I said above and try it next time.

Keep in mind from the top to impact is 1/4 of a second. You blink your eyes in .33 of second. You can only do and think about so much. I say it is a turn and shift. If you think shift you will probably slide. If you think turn you will not shift. You need to do both. This is why pros heads move forward a little as they start down then the head goes back. The head moving forward is the shift occurring. I would do what you need to do or think about to make it happen. This is different for everyone.

Paul I am 74 and have adopted your Body Swing method. It's totally improved my clubhead speed and improved my mechanics. I have a question for you. I saw an analysis of Charlie Wood's driver grip and it was very interesting. He shows 4 knuckles on his left hand and his right hand is under the club in a very weak position. On the backswing the face is skyward and it remains in a flat plane all the way through contact. The wrists unhinge well after ball contact. I watched Charlie and Tiger in the PNC tournament. Charlie hits his driver dead straight and far. Now, Tiger must have taught him that grip and you can see how it eliminates the timing of the wrist unhinging at impact. Can you give this a try and see if it would be useful for us senior golfers. Thanks, you truly are the best instructor on KZfaq. Alex
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you are doing well with The Body Swing. I appreciate the support. I don't like that grip and the shut face. If the face is shut you need to turn the hips opening them through impact about 60 degrees which you will never do. If not, you will hit huge hooks. Charlie is a kid. Tiger should know better. I gave him a lesson on this very thing when he was 17. He fixed it. I would assume Charlie will too one day.

Thanks Paul. I can see the potential for bad hooks. I also suspect a loss of clubhead speed if you don't unhinge through impact.

So if you are that close you have a little more work to do. You need to hit the exact positions I teach in The Body Swing. Most people don't do the follow through position when really this is the most important position in the swing. So check your grip and set up and nail the follow through. Then feel the torque in the coil and stop trying to hit the ball in any way in the downswing with your arms. Stay focused. Do lots of daily practice swings.

@@paulwilsongolf thanks Paul I think my problem is with the arms. I can feel the lower body leading upper and arms when I do practice swing or hit in the air drill, but when there is a ball I just can't resist using the arms and it causes over the top and lower body can't catch up with the arms. Some other teachers say you should start the lower body weight transfer to the left before completing the backswing otherwise ur arms always lead, any comment on that? Thanks for your reply
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 3 жыл бұрын
This is because you keep trying to do it at top speed trying to hit great shots. Why not do it slowly but do it right? At least then you are doing it as opposed to not doing it. So you do it slowly then you gradually speed up your lower body for more power. Master this drill: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbyYp69eyZemaY0.html It is a shift and turn. @@paulwilsongolf much appreciated for your reply Paul. I probably expect too much improvement in too little time even though I practice almost everyday. Will slow down to 50% and hit 2/3 distance on range and course! One final question, what initiates transition/downswing really bothers me. I've watched a lot pro in slow motion and KZfaq coaches, most of them "squat" or "fall" to left foot before rotate hips, should an amateur do the same or simply think rotate hips at the top of backswing? I'm 37 yrs old only started playing 6 months ago, reasonably athletic and flexible (played mostly basketball for 20 years). Thanks a lot in advance

Anytime I make a change I tell myself this is going to take 1 month to master. Repeat this stuff daily in practice swings at home to make changes even faster. From the top to impact is 1/4 of a second so if you are thinking of 2 thoughts you will do the first and not the second. So it is a shift and turn. Throw some balls overhand to get the feeling. You will do it perfectly because you already know how to do it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/beBlmLiUuN3Qg58.html Then you work on the backswing and follow through. This means you coil and load going back. Then you uncoil and get to the forward leg (foot) into the follow through. If you can move from the backswing to the follow through properly the middle will be fine. Point A to Point B.

I have wondered how can you get people to change their mind set especially good players to be able to hit the bal better than they ever thought about
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
Well it is explainging "why" hitting hard isn't going to work is a part of it. Then it is getting them to the ball almost as far if not farther that that were with less effort. If they see that they will want to change. Then of course there are certain positions and movements I teach that give feedback so they know they are doing them. If you have no feedback they will go right back to whacking away at it. Also, get them doing lots of practice swings. No ball means not hitting so they can make the changes. Believe me, some people are hard cases. Takes me a while to get them to not keep hitting as hard as they can.

I feel like at least for me a lot of the arm and hand tension comes from trying to be in certain positions in the swing. ie: rear elbow to side, flat or bowed lead hand, lead arm extension, etc. on and on. I don’t know if Mr Wilson just assumes you hit these positions or these positions are naturally hit with a body swing and loose arms and hands. I feel like if I didn’t care about those positions I could loosen up. It’s not trying to hit that tightens me up it’s the need for accuracy. I feel like those positions produce greater accuracy. I hope I’m wrong. Hope that makes sense to somebody.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 3 жыл бұрын
Well, in no way would I teach all of those positions especially if you are trying to bow the lead wrist. This alone would be a true disaster for any am working on this. So you can stop that asap. Elbow to hip. You can stop that too because they would happen if you are not hitting and fire the lower body first. Lead arm extension not sure where you are working on this? Impact if so, the lead arm would also extend if you used your body and allowed the weight of the club (mass) to extend it. So you are not following what I teach yet. You are going to coil and hinge. Then you are going to uncoil and allow the club to rehinge. The final thing is you not hitting or helping the shot with your arms. So quit trying to do all that stuff. Yes, there are some positions you need to work on like fully hinging at the top, coiling and firing your hips to hit the ball but you need to keep this way more simple than you are making it. ***START HERE*** Body Swing Concept: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e56pbM123r-XZZ8.html Grip: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLeKf9Npx6yRh6s.html Hinge Rehinge: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bMCVh9SU35jUnXk.html Secure Grip: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJ57ZqqU2dHeZ3U.html Power the swing with the legs and hip not the hands and arms.
