That design (outdates X11) has been the most reliable wood splitter in every Finnish household for ages. It is so common that you can find this axe when you move in to apartment which doesn't have anything to do with wood splitting, yet there it is. I think that is sort of an testament in it self.

I tape wrapped my handle like a hockey stick. I fount the handle on its own to be a bit slippery. Just twist the hockey tape into a cord, wrap the cord around the handle grip, then wrap the tape/cord with a layer of hockey tape.

Here in Canada Amazon was selling them for $118. I tried a new trick. I bought the entire stock and then the next one in line was only $59. I immediately bought the $59 one, cancelled the first order and the price went right back up to $118. Shopping like a boss, Rockin.

If you are driving up and not worrying about the weight I would get the 36 inch splitting axe or the X27. I have the 36 inch super splitting axe and I am pretty impressed. I have 2 wood splitters just some of the logs I have to split this year are so huge I wanted to at least crack them in half so I could lift them to put them on the splitter and figured I would split some smaller stuff with it as well. I have cut up a cherry and a couple ash since I got the axe and used it for all the splitting. The metal is really soft though almost have to sharpen it after every use. I haven't sharpened it yet and its still splitting mostly first hits but after the first 2 logs there was burs all over the edge. I only paid $25 for it though so can't really complain. Walmart has them on clearance as well as the mauls.

I've got the X10 which is the same but in the chopping version and I'm always amazed on how deep it bites into wood and performs clearing branches ...considering buying an X7 though for more detailed work as the X 10 is quite heavy.

The X11 appears like it’s too long for a hatchet and too short for an axe. I’m going to go with an X7. I do appreciate the side by side comparison though. 👍

Say Heah Aaron, you just proved that a hatchet/axe can make kindling, sure for a beginner a large knife might be safer, but I see how well you can use a hatchet for kinding just as easy if not easier and as safe. So many axe and hatchet's out tgere, and I'm sure tge Fiskar's is a good one, but I have (3) beater Estwings, and I mean beaters, I can even baton on the handle and tgey just go on ticking, so until I need a new hatchet, my Estwing Campers Axe is a good one, when I go scouting a new area, I like to carry my three cutting tool's on person so I go Lite, I could carry my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet, my Rodent 5, and my Wicked Tough Saw on my survival belt very conveniently, That's where bigger is better when chopping, but I trade of size with convenience so I choose accordingly. If I need to process alot of wood I could see that Fiskar's to be tge right size, but to make some kinding for a small fire to warm up some food, my Double Bit Hatchet is the one I carry.

I have a combo of axes the X11 and the X5 from Fiskars (and a X27 for use around the house)- Have you tried the X5 yet? A really good little handy camp axe, that comes with a nice nylon sheat, so that it can be placed in your belt. I use it when I go fishing and I can have it in my belt while driving, so its really mobile. Actually the X7 fits in the sheat from the X5, the head is the same size but the handle on the X5 is shorter than that on the X7 axe

Hmmm. Base camp yes, not a bushcrafter carry axe. Mini-splitting axe or a mini-splitter maul. The axe handle is far too short for the weight of that axe head, and the throw of the axe. Unless you want to do batoning, it appears to be more heavy than productive use, although compact, you will be the one using more calories than production of split wood. It is an oversized heavy hatchet, that makes this whole idea not intelligent. Everybody in the knife, hatchet, machete, axe, and maul sector are making all kinds of hybrids, when the ancestors knew what they were doing. Maul at base camp for making large to medium wood splitting. Axe (single or double bladed) for felling lumber or medium to small wood splitting. Hatchet for small to smaller wood splitting, no felling tree trunks or limbs, only branches. Knife for smaller to firewood and tinder making. Machetes and such for brush whacking, rain forest and jungle brush, not felling, chopping, or wood splitting. This is a hybrid, and should go back to a longer handle, and then it will be a maul, and rightly so. So it is a mini-maul, if you want to properly use it as such.

Sadly, a Gransfors Bruks would make the Fiskars look like a child's toy. I do like Fiskars though and nice they made this in Finland, rather than outsourcing to China for $1.25/hr labor like other stuff they do. I personally run a US made Estwing with a Lansky sharpening puck and it seems to run alright, but not so good as the others, though the full metal construction it'll last longer, even if you abuse them by throwing them. The plastics and wood will break.

What is your advice on choosing the x7 vs x11 For beach camping?
@duhni4551

X7, you don't need splitting power in beach camping but you do want some carving and chopping capabilities. Though now that i think about it, i don't know what kind of beaches you go to =D In general, x7 fits your bill in everything, it is kukri of axes.

lol sorry but i canceled at like 1:40. wtf is happening there? is there any logical reason for splitting wood between your legs? i mean, i have like a million for NOT doing it that way. just look at the 3rd try. of course the wood flies away. there is nothing to get stuck on and to withstand the power of the blade impact. are you sure your back enjoys this stance? 1:40 gave me the rest. see ya guys
