I had a trainer who was more aggressive with my puppy than he should have been and it made him aggressive. He was a very smart dog that was always a little sensitive to his surroundings and we treated him with the respect he required. Fast forward 7 years and he seemed to have mellowed a bit until one day he was asleep on the floor and my wife reached down to pet him without getting his attention first. He bit a 4" long section of her forearm out requiring plastic surgery. After I took her to the hospital for initial treatment and pain relief we went back home and he was lying in the yard and so happy to see us. Our vet helped place him with law enforcement as we were afraid to keep him but did not want to put him down unless absolutely necessary. Dogs are like people , every single one is different. That being said certain dogs have traits so make sure you know what you are getting. We have a Golden Doodle now that is the best family dog we have ever had but we still miss Tanner and wonder if he succeed in law enforcement as we were not allowed to know.

Leadership is the root to so many problems. I have a rescue terrier. Doesn't like people Have had him for four months now. He's almost eight months old. Right now he just seems to be consciously breaking all the rules taught to him. It's like I have to retrain him. The one area he has maintained in, is that when people come, I expect him to be sitting by my side, with no more barking. I am grateful that training is still there because I believe he would bite. Can't expect miracles overnight,, especially since he's still under a year. I'm reevaluating my leadership role with him everytime I watch one of Will's videos. He is spot on,keep an open mind about what techniques to use.

I'm so glad I happened to stumble across your channel. The lack of basic knowledge about dogs distinctive character is poor among dog owners these days, and Only Positive Dogtraining and its learningteory alone says absolutely nothing about dogs distinctive character, and that is sad. We are a group of people who have over a year shared knowledge about dogs's distinctive character, sosial language and behavior in a Norwegian Balanced Trainers group on Facebook. A fanrastic lady have for more than a year shared her more than 40 years of experience. Videos of her genuine and natural pack of dogs interacting naturally without human intefering for us to learn first handed dog behavior from the dogs them self. The tricy thing is to make people understand how to infiltrate dog behavior into Balansed Training, and here is where your videos come to help. I've shared a couple of your videos in the group, and I wil share more over time. Best regards from dogtrainer for more than 30 years from Norway. Keep up your good work, dogs and people all over the world nedds you.

My mutt had very low confidence but she had been rehomed 3 times before we got her. i believe everytime we got in the vehicle she assumed she was being rehomed again so she would poop and vomit for about the first week.but it was just when she was put in the vehicle but if i took another dog with her she was fine. I took a mini schnauzer with her to the vet (we had 2 mini schnauzers at the time when she was little) i even took a mini schnauzer with her to puppy class as well. I was struggling with her confidence... took her to a k9 trainer and they told me to take her around things she was afraid of with another dog. When she sees the other dog was not being afraid of whatever she might calm down. well it worked but her confidence shot through the roof when i put her in agility. Good girl became a natural saying for me...

Thank god nothing bad happened and thank god a second time that he did not got lost.

Thank you for this video. I have a young multipurpose Labradoodle service dog in training, and received her from a school that has people train their own dogs, but with an extremely strict way of doing things. Even if a dog could learn and grow much better with different techniques. This is a positive only online course, though I much prefer a balanced approach since it seems to be healthier for dogs, generally. What you said about the extremes and tribes across various activities of life, including dog training, resonates immensely. Don't get me wrong. I'm extremely thankful for the opportunity to finally get the service dog I need. I just get frustrated with the rigidity that feels like it's got the potential to keep my girl from being all she can be, both as a service dog and a companion.

Fantastic video! Every dog is truly different. Personally I had a mastiff mix that went through so much abuse and neglect before I got her. She was a positive only dog solely because at the first sign of aggression/anger/frustration on my part she would shut down and run and hide in her kennel. However my new puppy, also some random mix, was found with her littermates abandoned left to their own devices since they were 5 weeks old atleast. Because she didnt have a mother disciplining her starting a very crucial socialization points, she is very aggressive when she plays. Granted she is only 6kgs as of right now, I'm highly stressing play with bigger dogs that do discipline her and I do my best to set strong boundaries when playing. Love your videos! Been following your advice for months.

@cb1120
@cb1120 4 жыл бұрын
@@sue3032 Hi Sue, I think there has been a misunderstanding. I am well aware that anger and aggression are not in Will's skill set. I am in no way saying I used aggression or anger with my dog. I would never yell or be aggressive with her EVER. That being said there is one crucial difference between a well socialized dog vs my first rescue dog. A well socialized dog would have no issues with their family members walking around the house going about their daily lives. This would include the occasional clumsiness of a human by accidentally making a loud noise or dropping something suddenly. While this doesnt seem aggressive to the average person or dog. This can be perceived as very aggressive and dangerous to an abused dog causing them to react poorly. I am in no way saying to use aggression or anger in training techniques. I am just supporting that different styles work for different dogs by giving an example. Will is such a great resource for canine behavior and I'm happy to see more and more people watching his videos. If you are new to the Canine show welcome to the community

I adopted a little black lab puppy rather suddenly, and am having to catch up on her training. She is 9 weeks old at the moment, and so I'm not too worried. She is, of course, very excited and bites or nips a lot. I have been responding with a deep, verbal "no!" and a tug on her leash or collar, but she often growls in response or repeats the behavior. If anyone reading this knows of a video, preferably by Fenrir, on how to help with this I'd very much appreciate a link! As well as general tips on how to be a calm, consistent leader, for example a checklist or something of that sort. The more detail the better! Additional info: She seems to have taken well to commands like "sit" and "come" and I have been using "yes" as marker training, as well as teaching her her name by calling it and rewarding her when she makes eye contact. I am also crate training her, putting food in her crate when I put her in. If she cries and it's been a while since she's been out to do her business I'll go in, get her, and take her out, keeping the trip as boring as possible. I will bring her back into her crate if she starts to play or gets too excited, and then if she cries again take a second trip in about 5 minutes. She usually urinates on the first trip and defecates on the second.

As with most things in life, there are those that are those who are more expansive in their views and those that are more narrow. I prefer a balanced approach with most things. Actions have consequences. It is true in our every day interactions with people (and family), and it is something that we have to teach our dogs. Being balanced and fair is important---and your three point evaluator (harming itself, others, or property) is an objective way to determine the level of correction required so that the consequence to the behavior is efficacious.

Does anyone know of any reason why not to film the negative behaviour that the dog expresses that your requesting assistance on managing in order to show it to dog trainers/behaviourists. is there a legal reason? or data protection reasons? maybe can their faces be blurred? I just think it would be easier to assess the behaviour as your could watch the video countless times to observe in detail, not bothering the dog with the stress. I wonder if it would be easier to understand what triggers or where their behaviour comes from if you could assess first hand. plus you'd be surprised how many people in the comments call it first o.0. I hope there's a way you can do these explanative videos with footage of the behaviour to make it easier for the newer peeps like myself to understand. Thanks for posting, I appreciate hearing about dog behaviour from the dogs perspective but with a balanced approach to resolving. Keep up the Amazing work!

Everything you say makes sense. I will say as you have said before, there are certain breeds that I do not think are for everyone or not even for most people. A Cane Corso is a powerful and forward dog that will take charge in ways that can be dangerous if you do not. I don't think this breed is for your average family. To avoid situations like this people shouldn't just fall for a breed without doing true due diligence and being responsible to the utmost when making their decisions as to what breed to bring into their family at the beginning.

But my wife said once my Cane corso was sleeping in my spot( I wasn't home) and she put her are around her and she growled. She did it again and our CC growled again but eventually stopped. I told my wife she should have removed her from the bed. Any advice? Oh, our puppy is 5 months old.

so to cut a 17 min video down, leadership is about knowing the dog (person) and apply the tool suited for that dog (person). that is leadership tekstbook 101

Wanted to comment on the canine show but it's disabled. I just wanted to tell you that brasileiro as in fila brasileiro is pronounced brazilayroo, not brasiliero

Thanks for the guidance. I have a 1 year old Cane Coro that does this to a limited degree, but I can control him personally. I would like to be in a better place with him, for other family members. He treats my wife and I great. His sister is a gem though, but may only be aggressive to other dogs she doesn’t know. Gonna get your boot camp course when I could afford since I live in Trinidad and the exchange rate is super high. Been following a while and I enjoy.

Hey mate, Why the price increase on the training packages? It used to be $50 USD now its $75

I think Will has answered this elsewhere (?) - although unfortunate, the increase in the costs of hosting and other cost increases have caused this.

I love this video!! Sadly it seems to be doggy world politics> animal welfare :( To be open minded is putting your dog's welfare first.

Executive summary; @ 2 minutes: Reading of the actual question. @ ~ 11 mins: Beginning of statement of solution. You can skip the ~ 8 minutes of philosophical blather in between, it adds precisely zero to the solution of the problem at hand.

Hi Will, Well I've decided ,FINALLY, on my breed. I've decided to remain true to my real love and get a rott. I know the breeder very well. Have used her dogs with mine for breeding and have gotten one from her. In fact the pup I will be getting is a granddaughter of a bitch I gave to her years ago. The pups were born on March 4th...11 pups! Will hopefully have mine in May!

Dogs can't speak human, humans have to learn to speak dog. Being a calm, consistent, and firm but fair leader is the alphabet, training is the language.
