Fleece is one of - if not the - most underrated items of clothing. It can be used year-round for just about everything. FutureFleece is definitely at the technical end of the spectrum, with a very definite performance feel about it. It's light, very light, and features a remarkably high loft courtesy of its unique construction. As a result of this it's warm, all the more so considering its weight, but crucially it's exceptionally breathable too, so does a good job of regulating your temperature (more so than any other fleece I've ever worn). In layman's terms it's a really light, really warm, and really versatile fleece, but if there were to be one catch - it's nae cheap…

Since its on the UK climbing channel, is it durable? As in, It wouldn't rip apart completely after a few climbs and treks? Had it happen to some other super light technical fleece jackets.

I haven't had any issues with durability, although something I would say is that super light infrequently means super durable - the two infrequently come hand in hand. That said, I've been impressed with the FutureFleece and think that if you did rip it, it'd be because of something that would rip almost any other fleece. It certainly feels well made and built to last.

how is the wind resistance? I live along the ocean and it is always quite windy, hoping it won't just pass thru and leave me cold

It’s designed to be breathable, not wind proof, and I’d barely describe it as wind resistant. If you want/need that then you’ll need another layer. That isn’t the purpose of this particular product.

Is this similar to the ME Kinesis? That also uses Octayarn.

I haven't used the most recent version of the Kinesis (i.e. the one that features Octayarn), but used its predecessor and really rated it. Having seen/felt the modern version it in their showroom the Octayarn differs from what's featured in Futurefleece. In the Kinesis it reminded me a lot of Polartec's Alpha, only on a smaller scale with shorter fibres, whereas the Octayarn featured in Futurefleece is more loop-like, with more gaps in between. The major difference between Futurefleece and Kinesis is the former is very much a fleece/midlayer, whereas the latter is the next level up as a result of it having a windproof outer. As a result of this it's difficult to compare them like-for-like. Dan did an in-depth review of the Kinesis a few years ago, if you happen to be interested: www.ukclimbing.com/gear/clothing/softshell/mountain_equipment_kinesis_range_-_the_ultimate_softshell-13238

@@ukclimbingofficial thanks for such a detailed reply. I love my Kinesis and really rate the Octayarn inner insulation/ lining material. It’s that little bit cooler and more flexible for UK weather than polartech alpha that I find can be too warm. I’d love to see the fabric in other clothes so this is really interesting!

Outdoor companies are wicked smart. Charging big bucks for something which in practical terms performs no differently to the fleece you get free with a nat geo magazine subscription or from any charity shop for under a fiver.

I still have a Rab fleece, obviously.

I’d disagree with “performs no differently”, because they do perform differently. It’s like saying a Ferrari is the same as a Skoda - they’re both cars, but they don’t perform the same. The question is are they worth paying proportionately more for in order to get that extra performance? The only person who can answer that is you and each person’s answer is different.

We can also agree that the charge is too much
