Welcome back for another Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire video. In this video, I will describe what happened when The Mountain fought The Red Viper in the books. The fight between Gregor Clegane and Oberyn Martell was one of the most shocking moments in television history. This was one of those scenes that caught almost everyone off guard. It went on to become a classic moment from Game of Thrones. But how did this scene play out in George R.R. Martin's books? How faithful was this adaptation? Check out the video and find out. Thanks for watching!

I think a video on the chapter where Bran, Meera, Hodor, Jojen, and Coldhands finally reach the cave north of the wall in ADWD would be super cool! I just recently read through that chapter, and it’s pretty intense. I know they did something similar in the show, but I feel like since it’s the first chapter in the series where anyone comes across a child of the forest... well I’m guessing that makes it pretty damn special and significant lol. Also little comments from Coldhands such as “the cave is warded” I feel are important as well. That was just a chapter that had a really cool and spooky vibe for me, would love to hear your take on it!

I watch that fight scene several times over every time, but I think the actual fighting is quite slow. At least when Oberyn is landing significant hits. It bothers me more than it should, but if it wasn't for the like 1 second wait before hamstringing the Mountain and stuff the fight would look magnificient. The one scene that makes me sad and angry is Shireen's death. That one is truly brutal. Though I never back down from it, even though it almost makes me cry every time.

I've always read and watched Oberyn's way of fighting to be similar to water dancing. Or maybe because Oberyn has seen so much of Westeros and Essos that he probably took the best "moves" from each fighting style and incorporated that into his own personal fighting style? This scene also kills me bc all I can imagine is Gregor, Tywin's Mad Dog, doing what he did to Elia and her children. And worse, how I would feel if that was what happened to my sister. I thought Pedro Pascal did an EXCELLENT job portraying a grieving brother with vengeance and fury in his heart, strengthening his ability to try to murder the Mountain.

@@moneymayweathera Elia is never heard or seen but she is probably one of the most tragic characters (along with her children) in the entire story. And I also despise Tywin for ordering her death. I do believe that Tywin told Gregor basically to get rid of the 3 of them. And Gregor was a known rapist and brutal killer. I also immediately disliked Robert Baratheon for his glee when he saw the dead "dragonseeds", especially since he is also part "dragonseed". I weep for Elia and how she was treated. I don't envision her as a weak person, but rather I envision her as a fierce mother, who spent her last minutes trying to save her children. One of the best scenes in the series and the saddest. It makes sense now that Tyrion was a broken man after this happened. I never made the connection until you made it clear. Thank you for all of your hard work.

This might be an unpopular option but Oberyn is a very rare case for me, I liked him in the books but he's prob the only character who's on screen version I liked even more, Pedro Pascal simply killed it & imo brought something unique to the character that worked perfectly on screen even. This episode is both one of my all-time favorites & worst episodes combined, the episode was near perfect but watching it I remember having this feeling of dread almost cause I knew what was gonna happen to my boy lol & up till that point Oberyn was by far my favorite character on the show & I knew this would be his last episode. If only the rest of Game of Thrones was as great as seasons 1-4 were!

The shows definitely hit and missed on some characters. Tyrion is obviously near perfect casting, but there r obviously shortcomings when it came to ppl like Gregor just bc u don’t rlly find ppl muscular at 8 Ft tall. I envisioned him as somewhat younger than Eddie hall w longer hair. Ned Stark’s casting was also great

When I watched the fight on HBO I had already read the book and knew what was coming, but my heart was pounding in my chest all the same. One of the best fight scenes put to film and a tremendous display of acting and athleticism by both men. They both truly encompass the Red Viper of Dorne and The Mountain That Rides beyond my expectations. Great scene. I can remember reading Oberyn’s gruesome death for the first time. I put the book down and just sat silently, dumbfounded. Victory and justice snatched away at the last moment. One of my favorite characters dead in the dirt. And Tyrion, my favorite, is sentenced to death by his own father.

From both the book and show I always get heavy Inigo Montoya vibes from Oberyn. Especially in the books as the mountain is much more talkative and is yelling at him to shut up most of the fight.

Book-wise.... everyone viewed the Mountain as this unstoppable warrior. He was a badass you could just never hope to defeat. But then Oberyn showed up, and the whole equation changed. Dorne wasn't completely invisible to the Seven Kingdoms, of course, but they were a sort of separate country and there was a lot of separation between the two, so champions of one weren't quite as reknown in one country as another.

Very nice 👌. I was surprised when I first read that in the book. So, having read all the SOIAF books, the show fighting didn't surprise me. However, it did without a doubt, impress the hell out of me. Extremely well done. 👏👏👏. For me though, I wasn't taken aback by the Red Wedding. Too much was going on. Where as the Viper fight was so intimate it made it much more exciting. And, I was very disappointed that Aria through Nimeria didn't rescue Cat who then became, Lady Stoneheart. That was when I lost faith in the show. Although, the show as a whole, was still the best televised event ever. 👍☮️ .

This is number 2 for me in saddest moments in the show, I nearly cried. The only thing worse imo was when Jaime’s hand got cut off, I literally cried during that scene and every scene afterwards until he got back to Kings Landing. But Oberyn dying pi55ed me off the most, because he beat him and just died from bs.

never underestimate the bite of a Viper in my eyes Oberyn did won this fight by taking the damn mountain as they knew him with him and sending him into a well deserve coma if only the viper where aware that his arrogance could destroy him by taking the fight for granted if only he didn't care for that confession that doomed him but that is also how Heroes may face their end sadly Oberyn is one of my fav characters in this story

I was an extreme late comer to the show. I started watching it 4 or 5 months before the final season aired. I new about the Red Wedding, so I was anticipating seeing it, even though I didn't know the details. This fight and it's outcome were a super shock to me and made a bigger impact on me. The death of Oberyn was horrifying and shocking, very well done, as disturbing as it was.

Am I one of few who was disappointed with mountain versus viper fight scene in GOT season 4? It was actually a very short fight scene that lasted only about 3 minutes and was not nearly as intense as the way the book did it. In the book, it was much longer, bloodier, suspenseful, entertaining, grittier, unexpected and more realistic. I don't understand why HBO (who already had a reputation for taking creative risks) couldn't allot just another 15 minutes to be more faithful to the book regarding that iconic scene.

I also think that Oberyn's "I will be your champion", performance in the arena until he gets killed and the Red Priestess' enchanting fire to the weapons of the dothraki before engaging the undead was kinda similar, the show gave us high hopes all to be crushed anyway. But Oberyn's was more powerful since it was presented later on right before the battle ends, the dothraki's was predictable since it started early on the battle.
