The Munster's was a great show and enjoyed popular re-runs here through till the mid 90's..... And much like say "The Beverly Hillbillys", part of the appeal was that they are both Products of their times, with actors, cultural humour and Ideas unique to that generation and time period. If he made the whole show look like a Rob Zombie Music Video it might work, but then its not the Munster's is it?

I think gundam nails it when talking about the Munster's place in American culture as "that cool/goofy old syndicated show" rather than some great contemporary television. You see it on Nick at Nite or during the day and it's a fun couple of hours where you laugh at the puns and physical comedy and special effects, you maybe take an interest in a show from the era of Black and White TV. People discovering and enjoy cool old things will always be better than the umptenth reboot and remake, where our expectations of comedy and drama are different (wouldn't say "sophisticated"), and screwing up an old show's formula to make it work in the 21st century alway seems to bomb. If you need new "Munsters" just watch "What we do In the Shadows".

The Munsters were in syndication in my early years and I'm 58. Their mistake here is thinking that the show was popular for being good, when it was good for being goofy AND that there weren't many shows on TV yet. It was in BLACK AND WHITE! We only found out that Hermann was green when they made the first movie (in color) about them! The Addams Family was a more serious show, but still with gags, but more for older kids/adults. I grew up watching "The Munsters". Originally, I was skeptical about Rob Zombie wanting to do his own version of this property. The set photos didn't help ease my mind. The black and white teaser that came out gave me a little bit of hope, but minimal. Then this color trailer drops and knew this was going to be bad. Why? It looks and feels like a bad 90's CW show. 1. Sherri Moon Zombie is hot, but nowhere near as hot as Yvonne De Carlo as Lily Munster.Nor is Sherri capable of acting her way out of a plastic bag. 2. Grandpa Munster should be closer to the look and acting style of Al Lewis, but falls flat. Where is the whispy maniacal laugh? 3. Herman is the biggest problem. The actor is either trying too hard or not hard enough on the childlike slapstick that Fred Gwynne perfected as Herman. 4. The only good thing I can see from the trailer is a lot of love and respect went into the set pieces for 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

I had also been a fan of Pushing Daisies, another short-lived Bryan Fuller series, so when I heard he was doing a Munsters revival, I was onboard. At least ABC gave Pushing Daisies a couple of seasons. Considering the crap NBC was putting out at the time, you would think they would have picked up at least one season of Mockingbird Lane, instead of canning it and just airing the pilot as a Halloween special.

While we have problems today, I think it is important to understand that there were many problems in the past as well, some even more serious than what we have today. For example, racial prejudice. For example, wasn't The Munsters made in 1964? Interracial marriage became legal in 1967 if I am not mistaken. This is not to say everything in the past was bad or anything, but we should be able to appreciate the strides we have made like we take pride in good things about our history.

Lets not forget how at different point in the past slavery, misogyny, toxic masculinity, sexism, homophobia, transphobia etc. were all considered perfectly normal by societal standards. Or things like smoking and drugs (not all drugs obviously) which are harmful substances had widespread usage. heck women had hardly any rights back then and had to fight for them, back when Feminism actually meant something and wasn't just a pretext. Not to say there aren't still genuine feminists of course. Even little things like how games, anime, comics, TTRPG's and anything else nerdy were looked down upon, people have been beat up or bullied just based on their hobbies. I often feel humanity is in a constant cycle of 2 steps forward, 1 step back.

True, in many, many ways, things were much worse back in the 1960s. We have made a lot of progress as a country and a society. It is why the woke argument that American is an irredeemable, racist, evil country does not hold any water. I agree with Gundam that the attitude of Americans back then, despite the problems the country faced, was much brighter and that was reflected in the shows and art being created. Despite the progress we have made, our shows and art today reflect the post-modern, nihilistic hearts of the Hollywood left.
