I'm a born and bred Western Australian, I was actually born in Fremantle, we still have a terrible rabbit problem, even in the South West of the state, where I now live, the fence didn't work... I have also travelled and visited the amazing Murchison River area, numerous times. These stories are amazing and really bring up feelings of nostalgia from a bygone era, Western Australia is some of the most isolated land in the world.

Arthur Upfield remains one of Australia's most famous and beloved detective fiction writers. However: the plotting, the stories, and the appeal of his characters is said to be ahead of the quality of his prose, which was inelegant. He has been called 'a very bad writer of very good stories'. His famous sleuth was the half-caste policemen, Det. Napoleon Bonaparte "Boney". There was a good TV series in the 70s based on the Boney stories. For a time Upfield lived in in a house in the Dandenong Ranges, 30km east of Melbourne. This Upfield house is now a restaurant and it's about 300km from where I am at the moment.

This story was quite haunting because he was looking for an ending for his book and that’s exactly how the other men died. Does that make him a murderer though? No it doesn’t. My question is why did the other three men leave town so quickly and never to be found again? Did they do the actual murder knowing Snowy would be blamed because of the ending of his book? Or because Snowy had his car and it made him “look” guilty. For someone who had the perfect ending to make sure that no parts of a body would be found this was very sloppy. So we have three men that disappeared and we have another one that we don’t know if he did it or not it. I truly believe if the three men were questioned hard enough one of them would have not been able to take the pressure and knowing that the death penalty was on the table that one person out of three would have saved himself and turned on the other two. I almost feel too innocent people have their lives taken away when was the victim who was in burned any other was Snowy. Once the police found out about the ending of his book they automatically zoned right in on him and he was pretty much done in from there. Also as I said earlier the car and one last time why did the three men leave town ASAP never to be found Mr. Brief Case this story really got me this time. I hope you have a lovely week and as always a great weekend and we will see you next Monday I’m looking for another story to give you a really good mystery take care

A nicely explained reminder of a story I first came across a few years ago now. There's another story you might like to follow up, about a rogue who specialised in befriending 'new chums' and greenhorns who'd just arrived 'down under', persuading them to go bush with him, and ensuring that while he came back, they didn't. A long time since I read it, but I think he too was based in Perth, back in the 1890s.

Hey BC. This one almost ties in with my family history (I said almost). My dad worked as a rouseabout on Youanmi station from 1936-1940.A bit late but better late than never. 🤣🤣 I worked up near the Rabbit Proof Fence out of Peringeri (I'm not sure which side the rabbits are banned from.), and I've even seen the gallows at Freo Prison. Many thanks for the latest episode from my home town. Say, 'Hi' to Brief Cat. 😻

Thanks for that one! I still have my Mother's copy of "The Sands of Windee" with a yellowed newspaper clipping on "The Murchison Murders" inside the front cover! Have read all of AA's books, and was living in the Outback town of Hawker when some of the "Boney" episodes were being filmed there. His books were sympathetic to the plight of people of Aboriginal and Mixed Race as well as an insight into life in The Outback in the 30s to the 60s.

I live in the Murchison and always have. The Murchison is an area of about 50,000 square km’s with a population of around 1000. It’s hot, dusty and beautiful. An old neighbour of mine was a dogger and boundary rider on the rabbit proof fence. A dogger was employed by the government to shoot wild dogs which killed livestock. It’s an iconic thing that fence, and still exists now. There’s some great old characters in this area full of incredible stories of when times were bloody hard. I’d heard the story before but it was great to hear about it in all its detail, thankyou. 😊

I loved the Bony stories as a kid. Interestingly I’m pretty sure that one of his books “Venom House” is loosely based on the mysterious death of Margaret Clement in 1952. Also there is a quite good movie about the Murchison murders and Upfield’s role in it called “3 Acts of Murder”, worth a watch if you can find it.

My Dad told me that in the 50s when he was growing up here in North Texas there were so many jackrabbits that they were eating all of the crops. So they used to just shoot and shoot and shoot all day. There were thousands of them. Fast forward to the 80s when I was a kid, and I’ve only ever seen 1 jackrabbit in my entire life. That’s how few there are now. Weird that rabbits can overpopulate like that occasionally and cause so much destruction.

One of the Bony books centres around the rabbit culling that took place in the first half of the 20th century. With his plain but detailed descriptions of the trapping and killing thousands of rabbits in 100 degree heat it as about as close to Hieronymus Bosch ‘s painting of hell as I’ve ever read.

This was great! I had thought the detective in the fictional story could have found a tooth. Thank you BC, I missed you because of the funeral. God bless the Queen.

Good evening BC, I hope that you’re fine in UK, I had also finish watching the Queen’s funeral. It finished at 12am (Malaysian time).

i'm rather curious about the rabbit-proof fence. From experience and common sense, i can tell you that any regular fence certainly will not work.

Thanks for the upload during my September 2022 birthday long weekend! I unfortunately could not stay up until 3 AM to watch the Queen's funeral live. Birthday was on Saturday and I had a free Original Grand Slam breakfast at Denny's, then had Greek food and a pumpkin spice ice cream sandwich last night with the family. Now I can relax for my other birthday rewards.

What a story from Western Australia and from an area I know somewhat, having been born and raised in the Midwest region and the Murchison area is not that far from my hometown. Thanks for the great content.

The 'rabbit-proof' fence just seems like such a dumb idea to me- I can't believe people thought that would be remotely effective.

My my, this was certainly a unique one! I know it's long been romanticized for a person (okay, let's be honest -- a man) to venture onto the frontier, to ride into the wilderness and face the lonely life of a lineman (or somesuch), but it's become clear to me that there isn't a place on earth where a human won't take an opportunity to victimize another human.
