Exactly why I think the asoiaf prophecy won’t be as ‘ heroic’ as people are making it out to be. I feel like there has to be a cost to mesddledling with a prophecy like the ptwp/Azor Ahai and both Rheagar and Melisandre meddled with it.

First off, Maesters are biased against magic and prophecies as they believe it tampers with the natural order of the World. Secondly, all that saying means is that prophecy comes with a price, which Rhaegar understood from the very beginning. He didn’t misinterpret anything as the prophecy can be interpreted in many ways, there is no right interpretation. Rhaegar’s actions caused chaos indeed however it also ended the terrible rule of his Father who was continuously growing more insane with age and if it had continued could have costed much, much more chaos in the end. There is a reason magic is returning to the World of Ice and Fire, there is a reason why Aegon the 1st was so fearful of The Others enough to create the Iron Throne in the 1st place. It will be shown.

He even has the maester Valyrian metal mask, chain, and rod, indicating he's got a superior knowledge of magic, yet it's prophecy he singles out as dangerous. Martin has also said that magic in ASOIAF is supposed to be very dangerous and treated with suspicion. Rhaegar was led a stray by the Azhor Ahai myth that detailed sacrificing Nyssa Nyssa was necessary to saving the world. We find out from Davos Seaworthy that this retelling comes from Asshai, a place of dark magics, one that would like to reframe evil acts as necessary. When Davos thinks about whether he could sacrifice his wife, he figures no. This is Martin giving us a moral framing to tell us the commonly known Asshai Azhor Ahai myth is wrong. Melisandre follows her personal interpretation of prophecy and uses it to guide Stannis Baratheon to be a kinslayer, something very wrong. Likewise, Rhaegar's adherence to prophecy, and his pride convincing him that he or his child was Azhor Ahai come again, led to more chaos. Rhaegar had the perfect opportunity to overthrow Mad Aerys, with the major houses united behind him, but he let prophecy dictate his actions and he ruined chances for the actual good Azhor Ahai, Jon and Dany, to have a more stable family and kingdom to help them face the Long Night. There were most likely two Azhor Ahai, given the duality of R'hllor and it's inspiration, Zoroastrianism. One broke the world with human sacrifice and another who had to fix it, with the aid of his beloved. The World of Ice and Fire identifies the Bloodstone Emperor as the bringer of the Long Night, who usurped his sister, the Amethyst Empress, and with his tiger bride, sacrificed her to the black meteorite he worshipped. Like the Bloodstone Emperor, Rhaegar sacrificed Lyanna to his personal religion, resulting in many innocents paying the price, like Rhaegar's children. Rhaegar even has the symbolism of Bloodstone, as when he dies, Robert's hammer splatter the rubies, red stones, like they're a shower of blood. Rhaegar was an Azhor Ahai come again, just one of the ones in the wrong. A Catholic priest once told me that one shouldn't let prophecy dictate one's life, that one should be as moral as possible and God will work out the prophecy that way. This is why I like the lore of ASOIAF, because it's one of the only works of modern fantasy where letting prophecy dictate their actions leads to evil, rather than trying to be as moral as possible. We see this message in Martin's The Mystery Knight, where multiple characters follow one man's prophecy, leading to ruin for many, whilst Dunk the Tall just tries to be as moral as possible, and winds up on top. The ends don't justify the means.

does it say if it was a close fight or not? i know Robert was a godly warrior and the epitome of strength but Rhaegar was no warrior to scoff at either

Wounds bad enough that Robert couldn’t journey to kingslanding for a few days, hence why he sent Ned stark ahead in his place. And that was with a normal sword. If he was able to inflict such wounds against a colossus of a man with such strength and talent for war and battle in full plate armor I always wonder, could the outcome have changed if Rhaegar wielded a Valyrian steel sword that day. Valyrian steel which is said to so sharp and light and able to slice through chainmail and full plate armor…who knows but it will never be known. Maybe could have killed him, maybe not and still lose to Robert or the wounds may have been worse and Robert died after too. Who knows

@@SpixPrime DUDE YEA I AGREE! I always thought that would have been one of the most sickest battles to view or see the point of view of in the books. Robert hates Targs but he looks back and talks on that battle and Duel with Rheagar with such pride, he really thought of him as a testament to overcome. I wonder that too imagine if they still had Dark sister and he could have went against robert that would have been so sick, i’m pretty sure that battle was lost though regardless the knights of the vale mixed w the north is just an unfair mix not to mention all the other kingdoms that joined in with them. Hopefully one day we can get a play out of the trident and see one of the coolest moments in westeros history. I think that’s cool tho i always wondered why Bobby B never accompanied Ned to the tower to rescue Leyanna, he would have done anything to be there to save her so Rhaegar must have really did a number on him

@@jacksonfairfax6351 potentially it still could have ended the same even if Rhaegar killed Robert. But truth is targs were at a disadvantage because they were the army to cross the trident and so had the terrain disadvantage for start, so that was a mistake on their end. If they hadn’t done that and held their ground who knows, maybe that would have twisted the battle maybe closer maybe not. Though the true reason for the targ defeat was Rhaegars death. Their morale confidence and lines fully collapsed on his death and sealed their defeat so it could have potentially had the same impact on the opposition if Robert was killed, he inspired his side just as much. It could have shifted the battle if they didn’t make the same decisions and same things happened. But who knows we will unfortunately never know. Unless someone has a dream about the opposite result happening. Well unless you read a few fanfics trying to depecit it.

He knew what kind of monster his father was, and he loved Leyanna and her soon to be baby he could have just stayed at the tower while he sent Barristan or Dayne to slay Robbert. Though i suppose he thought it honorable to give robert the same courtesy of meeting him in open battle

Aegon was never described as sickly, nor was it ever mentioned explicitly that Rhaegar shared his opinion on the PTWP prophecy with Elia or anyone else. Not to mention that if we are going by the books and not the show, polygamy is all but banned since the time of Maegor the Cruel. This means that any marriage between Rhaegar and Lyanna is illegitimate. Honestly, I don't get why people interject their own headcanons and so confidently present it as true lore.

​@rrraynoorrr she might have since he did say in front of her that their son Aegon was the PtwP in Daenaerys vision. He also turns towards Daenaerys and looks straight at her and says to himself, "There must be one more. The Dragon has three heads." Most people, including myself, think that he saw Daenaerys and assumed that she must be his future prophesies daughter and third head, his Visenya. Which leads him either outright kidnap or manipulate Lyanna to run away with him so he can use her to have his third baby since Elia was sickly and would not be capable of doing so without killing herself and/or the baby.

i doubt that grr martin make it that simple. He likes to put a realistic spin on his fantasy story and to challange the steriotypical ideas behind common fantasy tropes. So i actually dont believe that either jon or dany are somekind of choosen ones.
