Someone definitely has him, like you said if all the Tugs were stored in a specific room why on earth would one of the main characters just be thrown out with the rest of the models. I don't think David had Top Hat tbh, in his emails with some members of SiF he expressed wanting the rights to obtaining the series and had no idea what happened to the models. HOWEVER, we all know those SiF dudes lie about shit all the time. Maybe he did actually know where the models were, but just kept them there because he had nowhere else to store them. Except for probably his favourite character. I definitely think Top Hat is still out there, it makes too little sense for him not to be.

top hat last appearance was on Mitton's real tug boat for a small tugs festival or something and nearing the end of the celebration most of the characters had their shock expression put on before going to storage and that was top hats and grampus last known appearance

not saying this is correct but i found a HUGE chunk of info that probaly gives us the official answer to where Top Hat and Grampus are, heres the info: A great majority of essential assets from TUGS had been kept by co-creator Robert D. Cardona in his storage unit at Shepperton Studios since the 1990s. This included the models, the master reels and assumingly much more. In 2010, Robert's storage unit was illegally emptied by the studio's higher ups, with everything ending up in a skip. A passing builder discovered the assets in the skip and put as many as the models as he could into his van. The models were severely damaged. Later on, the builder learned of a model-boat enthusiast on a TV advert named Richard and gave the models to him. Richard repaired the damages on the models until he sold them.

Well if you don't know there was a thing called Tugs Day and Ten cents Zorran Top hat and Sunshine were displayed on a Table on a Harbour with real Tugs and they are wearing they shock faces they were afraid of put back to storage so Top hat is still with the Person who gave the Models to the Star Tugs Trust. It's possible that Top Hat might be in Mitton's house or in the rescuer's possession. However according to EN2's Tugs Iceberg video Top Hat was last seen at a boat event (referred to as Tugs Day) along with Ten Cents, Big Mac, Sunshine and Zorran. So maybe after the event, David Mitton took Top Hat home with him.

Well 1 I have a theory about gandpus that his model might have been brought out of storage to help show the Thomas and the magical railroad crew what the idea for mixing Thomas and tugs charters and because after the movie the film right were sold to hit unexpectedly do to bankruptcy they might have not had time to get gandpus back with the rest of the tugs. So he could be at hit.also Izzy gomaze was used in Thomas and friends and is also in there storage along with Vienna, big micky and same could be possible for Top hat.

There is a theory I've seen not mentioned in this video that Top Hat's hull might've been used for Bulstrode in T&F... Who knows what happened to his super-structure though...

I don't like Top Hat that much, but for the sake of preservation we need to find his model (Grampus too). Most likely theory is that he was lost in Japan or taken by someone at clearwarer studios.

my theory is the Mitton estate... here's a little tidbit I'm gonna share, one of my mentors from Uni (a man named Greg Boulton, who was an Aardman model maker on "Sledgehammer" and "Creature Comforts") got to meet the man the myth the legend, the one and only Ray Harryhausen once... and Harryhausen had a LOT of the stuff he worked on from his film career dotted around the house (fun anecdote, Harryhausen's wife said to Greg "I'm glad YOU like them you can't go anywhere in this house without seeing a dinosaur..." 😆) So if Top Hat is anywhere it'll be in care of the Mitton estate... I also know Nick Park owns a paddling pool sized Dog Bowl from a Purina dog food advert he himself was a part of at Aardman... so it's not uncommon for directors and indeed animators to take home a "trophy" from something they worked on, shall we say...

Even though the whereabouts of Top Hat remain unknown to this day, I’d say he’s either at the Mitton’s house or is in possession of the original tug’s rescuer. Or who knows, maybe he’s being kept by another Tugs enthusiast that has a connection with the crew behind that show. I really hope someday Top Hat shows up somewhere and that he’s alright and hasn’t been thrown out. He’s one of the best characters though, so I doubt he’s been in the garbage for all these years. I think the person who found the Tugs decided to keep Top Hat. Maybe they were on the production team and Top Hat was their favorite character or something. I think it's that one because if I was that person I would've kept Hercules and/or Big Mac because those 2 are my favorite characters

If David Would have kept tophats model before he died in 2008 he would’ve asked someone to look after him like you said but as the other person was given the rest of the models and faces the Star tugs trust In 2012 then he must have a hunch like the rest of The KZfaqrs and myself must known that the models are kept in a glass case who people wants to come and see them but if a person ask if they would like to touch the models they would say no you can’t touch them you could have a look at them not touch them and all they did was let some of the people get a closer look and ruining some of the models if tophats model can be trusted to them without letting people touch it and kept behind a glass case then every should be alright if they make These new rules for the trust to have in the near future hopefully.🤔

The Japan one does not make sense, the toys were based on their measurement photos (see how ten cents and sunshine have the same faces), we know all the tugs had measurement photos so it’s likely tophat whas just wearing his shocked face in those photos (which explains why he has it on more than one toy)

Some guy found a listing for Top Hat today and we decided on how we should handle it. Somehow, he's in the Netherlands. The seller said he had a "funny face" which matched the shocked face that went missing.

Well the reason his shocked face is missing is cause he was put on display during the weekend of tugs day and a couple hours before the event ended all 4 characters there which also happen to be the same 4 made into takara toys were given their scared faces to show they were scared to go back in storage thats y when tencents sunshine and zorran were found they were all wearing their scared face mask we don't have dates but I would then assume they were sent to Japan for the toys cause of the evidence u present and the fact its the same 4 characters I don't however believe that tophat got lost on the way back I think either someone at sif or or the trust have him secretly both r full of scumbags anyway so its not that far of a stretch
