Compared to a few years ago bigs weren’t even remotely expected to shoot jump shots and now we have 3 big MVP finalists that can handle the ball well and pull up from range, the game really is evolving. Love the videos Jxmy!

@@-ac-8296 Those are 3 all-time greats and Hakeem hit 25 3 pointers total throughout his entire career. They all had great short mid-range games but none of them could use the 3 like many bigs are expected to today.

Once big men learned to get a shot, they were remotely impossible to defend without having to get fouled or the opposing team to pray that they miss, it’s absolutely hectic

exactly. big men were taught and trained to be physical and use their body in the 90s-10s, since the perimeter game wasn't as prevalent as it is now, they were the best as they were the biggest and strongest people on the court. as 3 points and iso game evolved, big men were left behind, the last 15 years has just been them adjusting their game to catch up, and they finally have. league is in wraps, big men are back.

i remember seeing him in his rookie year and thinking to myself, if this guy bulks up, he could be a mixture of Shaq/KD. Shooting and pulling up like KD but also driving and getting to the basket as quick as KD can but with the power of Shaq (obv not the same power as Shaq, no one will top that). But to see the amount of work and improvement he has put into the game is incredible. Glad he evolved and improved the way he has. I dont think hell be a shooter like KD but it would be an insane kit for him to have.,

@@marvaff6878 If you are serious, he seems to often ignore rule changes or not know of rule changes that may have changed the game. He also greatly downplays players of the past -- even from 25 years ago. In this video itself, he suggesting these 3 bigs are perhaps the 3 best of all-time but ignoring that stats are going crazy because the game changed. If 3 of the highest PERs are in on season, it likely means the game has changed that it's easier for players to rack up statistics. He isn't adjusting for how the game is played. Thinking Basketball and even Clayton (can't remember the whole name) have a much better understanding of stats and know how look at players of the past. Jimmy here is better at just highlights and more 'fun' topics but deeper dives into stats across different eras, Jimmy has extreme recency bias.

@@marvaff6878 I realized I made a comment elsewhere with more details: This Channel has so much recency bias and seems ignôránt of important details. “15 years ago the teams started going with guards”. There were some major rule changes starting in 2004 that opened the game and made it harder for a post only big man. Then around 2014 the nba figured out the 3 was very important so it gave even more value to small ball. Stats the past decade are so padded because the nba removed hand checking and allowed less contact by defensive players. Offensive plays also no revolve around single players much more - That’s why right now there are 2 players at 30pts 11reb 4ast, another at 27pts 13reb 8 ast and guards and SF at 25-30pts 7-10 ast. Westbrook was averaging a triple double for several years and Harden was a 30pts 10ast 8 reb machine. This is a a reflection of rule changes that made offense easier.

@@Homer-OJ-Simpson I agree - it’s far easier in this generation to accumulate stats. The game has certainly changed to the advantage of the offensive player - and that’s even before Steph Curry/Golden State Warriors being the pre-cursor to the 3-intensive offence seen across the league.

I think this year was a little different because they’ve had 2.5 season in like 1.75 years, so every player is playing to hard and getting injured, so they have to miss more games or take games off to rest. This means the non superstars get more minutes, and also make the injury list because they are playing harder than usual. In a few years, they will get healthier, or the NBA will lower the regular season games

Hot take: ball possession/touches and area’s where players receive the ball influences PER ratings. Doncic had 10 more touches a game than Embiid and probably farther away from the rim, which makes it more difficult to have a high PER. Also the amount of touches makes it harder to have a high PER. Would love to see Jimmy’s take on this

Yes, it has an influence, but even then, they didn't just have the highest PER's this season, they had 3 of the top 10 PER's in NBA history. There have been plenty of dominant big men who had a similar amount of touches and shot selections, and none of them have even come close to the PER's of these 3. Regardless of the amount of touches, this feat is revolutionary.

@@avinashanand17 Jimmy has too much recency bias and isn’t good at understanding not only the changes in rules over time but also advance stats. PER are through the roof not because these 3 players are 3 or the top 5 or 10 players but because they are great players playing in an era where the rules and officiating have made it a very offensive game and the teams are using individual players far more than before. It’s not just these big 3 but Westbrook was putting up triple doubles seasons for year, Harden was a 30pt 10ast 7 reb machine etc. Luka is a 28pt 8ast 8 reb machine. These are averages not seen for many decades all happening by several different players in the past 8 or so years.

Considering that these three men are all international players, I hypothesize that the international talent pool is at the tipping point of matching the US. These guys, along with Doncic and many others are just the first wave of phenomenal players coming from overseas that show that the game has grown to the point that it is not the “big man being back”. The dominant big man highlighted in Jimmy’s video is actually the international player who has the measurables to have NBA draft priority. With today’s improved player development and talent identification more players at every position will challenge the US players in the NBA and in international competition like last years Olympic tournament. This is a wonderful video highlighting some of the best international prospects who have developed into MVP candidates/laureates, and soon we will recognize that these men were not the shepherds of a resurgence of the post playmaker but rather the inception of the truly international game of basketball. Back when the NBA didn't have as much various skills the big men dominated because they were big and could rise up and score more easily over the smaller player. But then as the game progressed guards could easily pick up better handling and shooting to put their game far above the rest of the players. Now in today's game the few big men who are capable of adapting and adopting the skills of capable guards, shooters, and all around scoring/defending, the Big men have the clear advantage since they have the skills of elite-level guards with the dominant size of a 7 footer.

@@Anthonydu01630 I'd say "big man" is the role on the team. What he means is you aren't going to see KD driving hard as a roller on a pick and roll, or Lebron sitting on the block while his guard sets up an offense. Lebron will set up an offense like a point guard and Kevin Durant looks to get open off of off ball screens and Isoing on the perimeter.

@Wallace1p Bro Wilt was strong but he wasn’t Shaq, Wilt was 290-300 pounds, Shaq was 290 as a rookie and was like 325-350 in his prime, with a much bigger frame, even guys like Lebron, Zion, Dwight Howard, Steven Adams and many more are probably as strong as Wilt, maybe more, Wilt was a freak but you have a lot’of freak in the history of the sports.

And there's other players like Ayton or KAT that aren't on the level of these three, but 10 years ago would be 1st or 2nd team NBA and they're still YOUNG. The big men didn't go away (only) because the game changed. They went away because somehow there was no one good enough.

I think the training and mentality for big men has seen a huge shift over the past decade. It took them some time to adapt to the modern game, but I fully believe that the future of the NBA will be 7-foot freaks with guard skills.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction... After the Warriors won the championship using small ball, many teams (Being that the NBA is a copycat league) Either went small or had a small-ball line-up. This has left the door open for talented big men to dominate.

On the PER point, it should be noted that before the 80s blocks, steals, and offensive/defensive rebounds were not counted. Given this, Wilt would have a decenetly higher PER. Still crazy that 3 dudes are havin this crazy a season, just wanted to point this out.

Go look at when he was doing in college in track and field and that not to mention rule changes like the free throw wilt chamberlain in college dunk from the free throw line from the top of the key in three steps since no one else could do or ever seen doing that they changed the rules in college that you had to specifically shoot free throws with out passing the line. No matter the Era Wilt would have been successful cause no one was like him. Final note wilt benched over 500 pounds with out breaking a sweat according to all the body builders and Arnold Schwarzenegger stated wilt picked him up with ease made Arnold feel like a child in his arm.

@@PathtoYahawah tbf wilt was 30 cm taller than arnold. i mean arnie is a big dude by normal standards but its just mindboggling how big some of these bigmen in the nba are/were. you kinda lose the perspective since they are mostly seen next to other nba players but these guys are just gigantic. someone like wilt or embiid are basically a different species just from a physical standpoint. its no wonder he could lift arnie in the air without a problem, for him it was basically like lifting a child would be for an ordinary grown man.

@@peterpan3022 Joel is not on the same level as Wilt man slow it down a bit wilt was a track star in high jump long jump and running and Joel is not lifting over 500 pounds the last NBA player I heard lifting close to that or 500 is Ben Wallace. Yea out of the human species they are on a different lvl 7 footers but in that realm Wilt is the cream of the crop in totality!

The big men had to evolve into having the skill set and agility to play like a guard. Then they dominate. Hitting outside shots and making assist and getting rebounds. Not just posting up with their back to the basket but having perimeter game to go with the inside game.

Just goes to show you how dominant Charles Barkley was athletically. Closest modern day comparison is Zion. Barkley was lucky to have Moses Malone in his ear about being too fucking fat and him being mature enough to listen to that advice. With Zion we've seen what happens when that advice is ignored.

All 3 of these guys are insanely skilled and it will only grow from here because as we go along and the game evolves, players will be asked to be more well rounded at every position, especially the big men because they cause the most matchup problems.
