I personally love horror fantasy, horrific abominations/villains really get me excited. Mordekaiser, Aatrox, Pyke, Fiddlesticks, even Jhin are all some of my favorite characters just for the fact that they are the villains. I find myself completely agreeing with Necrit in that I have not cared about a single new champion. I am waiting for the next bad ass horror like villain to be released. Someone genuinely evil, not a pretty boy longing for his lost love. I really hope I see another one of these types of champions in the years to come. as you briefly mention, sexy/pretty/cute just sells best/is the most desired, and this isn't anything exclusive to Riot or America, this is the reality of the entire world, now and throughout human history one thing i think trips people up though, is that the dynamic doesn't just have to be "pretty and ugly", and although i'm a massive fan of beauty in general, i'd love to see more gnarly designs because in reality, if you have such an overwhelming amount of beautiful/sexy characters, eventually "beautiful/sexy" doesn't mean much, since there's nothing to contrast it to

I hope they add a Draklorn warrior, especially one that has lived for a long time (cannon-wise). I feel like they could both expand and clarify the Freljord region and what the Frostguard have been doing. Also, having them could really help the barren (lore-wise) landscape of the region.

Great video. Just as an FYI, I'm pretty sure the teaser image with all those unique looking people from the "new nation" is meant to be teasing the upcoming tank and not Nilah. It's mentioned that the tank is from that new area somewhere within Shurima, which is why Nilah doesn't use any of their garments or styles since she isn't from there.

Literally in my opinion I think the coolest design of Bel'Veth is when you pick up void coral, transform into the monster and screech- and there's the shockwave effect of her screech. It's so satisfying. They clearly do have a capacity to sell monster champions with the sound design and animations, they just need to trust themselves more.

I like the fact, that there is someone in riots team, who has the capability as well as the will to make such boring or just dissarpointing designs into unique themes. The problem I see is that, while a good story can make the most generic character charming and unforgettable, its the lore. A part of the game, which maybe 10% of the playerbase really look forward to. For most league players a boring design can be rescued by an interesting in game gimmick, but most of the time those "gimmicks" are overloaded or frustrating, with some uniqueness shining through, but beeing hold down since it is the 116th sexy character with dashes etc. The lore of runeterra is magnificent and a few years ago I read a lot more of it, but sadly it just isn´t in the forefront of a moba game.

legends of runeterra is defo superior in creating new characters that are actually interesting. probably got to do with the fact that most of them are not made to be champions, which in turn made creativity in creating a character less limited. in league, they have to consider that the new champion has big importance to a plot, which means the character should have a presence. also, they have to stand out from the rest of the champions and look as unique as possible. lor don't have as much of a problem with some cards looking similar to another, because the main visual clarity of each cards are not solely reliant on the character design but the card art, like they can even use a same character in a different card but it won't confuse you which ones they used.

Its kinda disappointing that my boy pantheon gets the shirtless treatment in his ashen knight skin. God damn I wanted him to have a badass armor like pyke, that might have filled the ironclad warrior shaped hole in my heart for the time being.

Really good points about the fantasy of Runeterra. A good example would be differences between a champion like Pyke and a champion like Zeri, there is such a noticeable narrative gap between them that I hope Riot returns to the high fantasy it used to have. The thing is THEY HAVE THE ART already done in Legends of Runeterra or on Universe; What I wouldn't give to play as a draklorn inquisitor.

I honestly have to agree with new champions losing their excitement over time. The last champion I was actually excited about was Yone because the Spirit Blossom event expanded on Ionian mythology, Yasuo/Yone lore, demons and that he looked fun to play. Before Yone though the last champion I was excited about was Pyke, he had such a good teaser, he brought back the Bilgewater ARAM and he was an actually compelling character by design and lore all without looking attractive. Look at Pyke today, he's got quite a few skins, he's popular and he's been in about half the events since his release. Can you say the same about the other attractive characters that Riot has released? No, very few have attained his level of fame. Sure, you could argue that it's because his gameplay is unique, but I don't think that's the only thing carrying him.

i have to disagree: "a proper warrior, armored, and fighting for a purpose": this is literaly the definition of rell, fully armored, controlling, using her armor to create a steel horse she can ride on, and she fights to free children used by noxus and the black rose. Yeah, she's only 1 exception, but she's still there

I've been a fan of Jaren Rosen for a few years now. It feels like every champion he touches becomes incredible. He is a phenomenal writer.

I think that there are a lot of designers who want to stop making pretty champions but that there are a lot of higher ups at riot who stop them from doing that. I find that legends of runetera supports this theory as there would be more freedom in the designs as there is a huge amount of cards and the higher ups would not really care about the "normal' cards. It's kinda sad really, bel'veth mught just be the closest thing they were allowed to a monster. I know we are getting a monster champion but like the fact that we have known about it for so long makes me think that the designers kniw what we want and are very excited to make this champion, maybe they had to argue a lot with the company to be allowed another monster champion. Of course this is just pure baseless theorising, but i wouldn't be suprised if this was the case

I really like Renata Glasc design and lore, many chem barons fear her, she is like Silco in that regard ( but not dead lol ), she commands respect. Illaoi, Xayah and Renata are my favorite female champion designs.

The problem with Nilah is that her model/character looks so generic. Even Jax that is just a cape has more charisma than her.

I still remember the golden age of champion releases between 2014-16. Especially 2016 There was so much hype about every reveal, theories went wild and when the champs released everyone was hyped to see who they are and what they can do. Do you remember the mystery around Jhin? The aweinspiring teaser of Aurelion Sol? The amazing cinematic for Ekko! There was so much effort put into every release, into every design and every champ was unique. Of course this wasn’t possible for every champion forever but now, 2 weeks after Bel Veth becomes playable we get another champ that could walk in our world streets and no one would notice anything special about her. Tbh, i expected a 4 armed fish lady who likes to brawl but gracefully like a waterbender. Wild dreams. I hope at least some of riots passion for champion design, the designs that made me love Runeterra above all other fantasy worlds comes back in some way. Even if its only one *new* champ per year (the reworks were amazing but reworks…)

The thing that really gets me about the thighs argument is her in game model. like look at the model she is literally given LEGS. Its not the splash art making it look like legs, she actually just has them.

From my experience artists love drawing monsters and don't mind drawing non sexy characters, so I don't think this is the design teams fault I think the heads at riot and the people who look at the stats and numbers see that pretty girls are more popular and sell more so the force the design detraction that way.

I disagree with a lot of the arguments here, but I think I agree with the general sentiment of the video. Renata having an attractive design doesn't remove from her fantasy. The problem isn't really "being attractive/visually appealing" it's that there's too frequent use of "generic" attractive features. Renata doesn't use "generic" attractive features to be visually appealing. Nilah doesn't have a big sword... but she has a whip which actually isn't in the game at all yet? We have big blades already, Nilah doesn't have to add to that fantasy, especially when she's adding to one that doesn't exist whatsoever in the game. Admittedly, her outfit seems a little barebones and could use some more stuff. Aside from being a bit simple though, I think her outfit would still work with the teaser, at least if it had some more color. Vex is a yordle, and while she is supposed to be darker and sadder, a big part of yordles as a whole is how they aren't entirely serious characters. Yes, Vex /could/ be the first exception, but to say that her cuter aesthetic misses her fantasy would be, in my opinion, wrong. She uses both the darker look her lore suggests and the lighter tone that yordles bring to League. She doesn't have to be an exception to be a good design. With someone like Aphelios, I don't feel like the level of attractiveness adds or removes anything from the "fantasy" of the champ. If Aphelios were less attractive, that wouldn't add anything to his character. He's still the silent fighter for the Lunari with the help of his sister. I suppose you could make the case that his gameplay isn't very representative of that... but how would you represent that in gameplay in the first place? Admittedly, we could use another warrior. But only because it's been a while since our last one. I don't think the roster is in dire need of warrior characters or anything, we have a decent amount. Also as a final point, Bel'Veth's model was updated to have an actual mouth when she is in her ult form. I don't personally agree that her ult form looks like an afterthought. Aside from the mouth issue, I personally have always thought that her ult form looked like it fit the model and animations better than her human form. Especially now that it looks more like a mouth in her monster form. I will absolutely agree about Battle Boss Bel'Veth tho, why the heck does she have a belly button where her mouth is...

No we need another sexy female champion, actually we need 5 of them so they can make KDA 2 and then they can make cinematics where they collab together and release 300 new skins

Talking about attractiveness, but "Edge" concepts is far more attractive than things like Yuumi or Vex, so in my opnion the last champ was Ivern in 2016.

Though I am new to League since January and I was more content with what was there already for champions that I wasn't interested with the new champs outside of Renata and Bel'Veth. That I am more of in the boat of wanting champs to get ASUs and VGUs. I'm more waiting to see Udyr and Skarner's VGUs. lol Also if we're talking about other already existing characters that could make good champ ideas, there is the T-Hex, the one Hextech robot Dino, it's in both Legends of Runeterra and Hextech Mayhem. It would make a cool idea.

I dont know about anyone else, but i would love to see a titan champ, the ones from the titan wars from 9000-10000 years ago. I think the lore is perfectly in place for a titan to awaken from its slumber and wander around. Also i imagine Bel'veth getting close to Targon for some reason and thinking she is unstoppable, only to be farted out of existence by Aurelion

I suspect that Riot is actually skipping the "interesting character" focus to save that type of content for their future more rpg and story oriented projects. After all, the vast majority of people playing league and spending money on the game play almost exclusively for the gameplay itself, not for that cool dialog interaction that references lore 99% of players don't know about. I'm sure we all know it's not in Riot's financial interest to put work into anything that wouldn't be consumed by the vast majority of players. So I think whatever interesting characters they've introduced in the lore are much more likely to make appearances in a game or show that is made for rpg players. Its unfortunate because I also get easily immersed in great story and am also getting bored with new champions where the focus is a gameplay gimmick rather than a unique appearance and insight into the lore. Luckily (hopefully), Riot pandering to their most profitable audience is the most likely way we will get that story driven content we desire. Ruined King was actually incredible and so few of the people who play league are aware of that. Its a shame but money moves mountains as they say.

I like to call this the 'Tate Kubo' school of design. Kubo is a mangaka and the creator of Bleach. He's gone on record for saying that he doesn't initially think too hard about his characters and just likes to draw cool shit. The story tends to come later as a way to justify that cool shit. It's actually quite a fun and organic approach to character design, because you get to have your cake and eat it too. Draw your emo boy with a big mechanical corrupted crab arm, and then make up some story about how he came from a cult of sea-worshipping engineers who would throw superheated iron into the ocean and then fish them up again to have their products 'blessed' by the ocean god, not realizing that they were actually dragging up pieces of an alien life form that would slowly take over both biological and non-biological matter, and that the emo visions are not divine commands, but the parasite slowly starting to take over his mind, etc.

A couple of weeks ago I was thinking about something like this, that there's very few "true warrior" designs and the variety that could be added with them. An idea popped into my mind, about another Ionian Samurai, but unlike the two brothers, design this one how a proper samurai would look: Heavy armor, big sword, slower movement, maybe a backup bow. I believe something like that could work, a support Samurai whose main idea would be "I am duty bound to protect my Lord/Lady", and could be explained like a bodyguard for Irelia (who I think is the acting leader of Ionia currently?) now that a new Noxian invasion is brewing. We truly need more of those warriors/fighters, and LoR has A LOT of characters that would work great :D

I completely agree, I don't even played LoL and any of runeterra's game. But the thing that keep me hooked on is their lore, their story, their world. It such an amazing fantasy world, just like you said. Filled with many wonder and varieties of cultures, creatures, Gods, and magics. It was like a culmination of several Gods (the writers) that decided to create a whole huge world, that could competes all of it's contents with our true living world that we live in. Those writers on riot, and their visual arts, designs, and such departments were truly a blessings

I've always held the belief that character design and character story must exist in symbiosis, by which I mean the character design should influence the story, and the story should influence the character design. That's how you make them feel like an organic part of the universe.

when i heared we get another female void champ that back then wasnt confirmed to be monsterlike, i almost snapped. like i could not stomach another kaisa pretty girl in my corrupted, cancerously spreading void realm. but gotta be honest. Nilah looks so boring, its not even funny. for the first time in years im actually straight up dissapointed in a released design.

I genuinely want to see another Minotaur. It’s going to look uncanny seeing a new one with amazing facial animations side by side with alistar. It would be on par to Lulu standing next to Vex. (Also, unless the female minotaurs look brutish too, I genuinely don’t care for how female minotaurs are illustrated in Runeterra)

It has been bothering me too for a long while, add the fact that they had previously promised ROTATING NOT RECURRING gamemodes (it was called RGM (ROTATING gamemodes). But where has that gone but the repeated/reused gamemodes we have now. Feels like a major drought in innovative content, haven't had the motivation to play for a long while now. The game has never felt so much of a money grab than ever, it used to be actually enjoyable but that can be a subjective topic. They even had previously established a naming system for champion updates namely: Visual Update (VU), Gameplay Update (GU), Visual Gameplay Update (VGU). But it seems that had been forgotten because we now have Art and Sustainability Update (ASU) like how is that any different?

one thing i will say about the heavy sexy slated mostly female release is i've counted how many of each presumed gender there is of the champions, there's almost double the amount of male champs as female champs even after the most recent release riot has also said that male players are 50/50 playing male and female champions, while female players are playing something like 90% female, so a new female champ is more likely to be picked up by a broad community than a male champ with that out of the way, i don't think every single one has to be attractive, or should be required showing off muscles/body there is so much to the world of runeterra unexplored and it seems like the goal is selling skins of attractive champs

I've got some real bad news for you Necrit. When asked why Gwen didn't look more doll like the official response given by Riot, or at least given by a Rioter, was that "She would share too similar a design space as other doll like champs." Those other "doll like champs" are Shaco and Orianna. They had to make Gwen look human because otherwise she would look too similar to an insane male clown and a robot ballerina. They will never make a second troll or minotaur. They clearly lack the ability to make them appear unique from each other. Or at least that's what their answer has been.

Saying that cute character and pretty character are appealing but monsters and “terrifying” (Pyke, Fiddle, etc…) aren’t is kinda wrong in a sense. Since a lot of people want monster and love Pyke design, doesn’t that makes it an appealing design but for another part of the community ? We always focus on appealing towards people being thirsty over cuteness or prettiness but in that sense that makes monstrous champions also an appealing design. The next monster champion that will be released will probably sell like crazy (especially in NA and EUW were people are always complaining of cuteness) so doesn’t it makes it a champion made to appeal toward the players in a certain way ? I think we are always focusing towards the pretty ones because, for some people, they are not fitting to the world of Runeterra and even if I agree that recently there has been too much pretty champions, at first there were none, only dark and bloodthirsty champions. It feels like they are trying to fill the lack of attractiveness and cuteness to attract a new part of the gaming population but in the end, releasing whatever type of champion that fit into a certain kind of concept like cute, pretty, monster, badass, etc… makes them an appealing design, it’s just that it’s not conventional to call a hideous creature an appealing design. (Btw, I do understand what everyone thinks when we talk about “appealing design”. I am just explaining why a monster champion is as much of an appealing design as anything, because it serves to attract a certain category of the population towards the game. It’s just that before Seraphine, Lillia, Neeko, etc… were released, people that wanted cuteness had to go for explosive Yordles, warriors or monster. (And yes beauty sell because humans are thirsty but I can assure you that if a creepy doll Gwen skin comes out, a LOT of people are gonna buy it, even if it’s not “appealing” as we may intend it to be))

I feel that, even if we keep shouting about how we don't want any more humanoid sexy champions, riot is already too deeply lost on the champion creation department . Bel'Veth was supposed to be what gave us hope, but that face and those thights only managed to shatter mine completly. There won't be any more urgots, trundles, cho'gaths,kha'zix, rengars... etc.

I think the image you are referring to as the homeland or region of nilah is actually the image teaser for the upcoming shuriman tank toplaner we'll get later this year but I may be wrong.

Sex sells and especially with them considering the overseas market, who typically prefer their characters to be "hot and/or cute" over anything resembling monstrous or getting within the "furry" territory. Which is why champs like Neeko are more humanish and why even Bel'veth "had" to have a sexy form, because Sex/Moe sells, especially overseas. Riot didn't forget. Sadly, they're just appealing to the market for more $$$. :(

While we did not have a true heavy-armored soldier in a while, we did have some armored warriors - though unconventional: Rell being the most recent, she is a rogue teenage rebel with a more modern, sleek, and cubist approach to the forms of her armor. Ornn's blacksmith attire and demigod body, seemingly made of stone, teeters on the edge of armor. Kalista doesn't fight like a traditional melee warrior and her armor is pretty light on her slender body, but her outfit is clearly inspired by Roman soldiers. Diana also is a fully armored warrior, though her armor is more sleek than the archetypal bulky plates of somelone like Darius.

I wish riot went deep in lore in stead of wide. New champ new region breaking models. Bel veth isn’t like other void born, renata isn’t like other chembarons, nihal isn’t like other demons. Stop making new stuff when you have gone deep about the old stuff

Bel'Veth's design feels like it has so many flaws. Like for one, her splash art, she literally looks like she has thighs. Like, is it just me or whoever made the art drew her with one hand while using the other for fantasizing of a mommy dom? Because that's not how monsters work, chief. I mean, even Kai'sa is a fail design. She enters the Void, then exits like a Victoria's Secret model. The Void is corruption, not a place where you can get make-overs.

im glad you made this video, i have the same feeling but with skins, when my main hasnt even gotten a skin in forever while lux,senna,leona,ezreal,sera are getting extra legendary/prestige skins when they already have a bunch, and most champs in the game dont even have 1 legendary or prestige it just makes me mad, especially since my main (vi) has like 2 decent skins and the rest are garbo

Jared has done amazing work with his champion releases and the worldbuilding he's brought to Runeterra. However, I disagree with your statement that he is "saving bad designs" the lore and the designs go hand in hand, Bel'Veth's lore is better because of her character design and vice versa.

I have this argument with a friend that came from overwatch all the time cause he says all the league champs are basically anime characters. I get that everyone has their opinions but if u give me the choice of playing a champ that's ugly for the sake of being ugly and a champ that looks good i'll choose the one that looks good. I'm the type of player that doesn't like playing champs like tahm kench not because of their kit but because of the way they look. And that's valid too. We spend sometimes hundreds of hours playing champs we like and i don't want to be looking at something gross the whole time

There's a crucial fact that people tend to forget: you can combine every western region where lol makes profit, and it wouldn't even scratch the amount of money China brings. Sadly, that's the state of mainstream games. If it sells in China, it gets done. So, as much as I love Riot's art and lore, I'm fully aware they are a company looking for a profit, and profit is not here. We stopped being the target audience long ago. LoL is already gone, so I just try to enjoy what's still not part of the big profit machine, like LoR or their animated series. They're like the last bastions of quality content.

I feel like fantasy champions or those with more lore would require expanding the lore, that's probably why champions like zeri are released and not darkins for example. Humans might just be easier to mend into the world of runterra. But then again, viego and bel veth expanded the lore but were given human like features.

"Sexy champions sells better" is not entirely the right assumption because there is a clear example in Japan with Godzilla, that franchise sells so well and i don't see boobas on godzilla&co, the trick is to make something unique enough that people are draw to it but usually companies (the high in command) are too lazy, want fast money and don't give a damn about the artistic side and so sexy champions it is.
