How has the diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of autism changed?
In the United States, an estimated one in thirty-six children has been diagnosed with autism. But missing those early signs is one of the biggest challenges parents face. Even though there is a lot of new research, many parents find that once their child is diagnosed, they’re still navigating the complex terrain of autism without a map.
Our guest today, Dr. Suzanne Goh, is a pediatric neurologist who has spent decades working with autism. Dr. Goh’s research led her to develop an innovative, whole-child approach to treating autistic children. She is also the author of Magnificent Minds: The New Whole Child Approach to Autism.
While autism can present its own challenges, it doesn’t have to close more doors than it opens. In fact, with the right approach and understanding, it’s possible to unlock your child’s remarkable potential. Listen in as Dr. Goh shares some of the technology and research that has changed how we diagnose, treat, and understand autism today.

What do you do about a child that has autism as well as schizophrenia? It seems like there is no program to help someone like that. They are always separated.

Autism leads to schizophrenia and pyschosis, bcoz their brain are overstimulated and they can't focus on one thing, overthinking in bipolar depression leads to that, all things are related as I observed

@@asmairumjamil3031 - that is absolutely not true. An autistic individual might develop a mental illness, but autism itself is not a mental illness.

As an AuDHD individual and a parent of AuDHD offspring, ABA is horrifying and abusive. I’m not a defective neurotypical that needs to be ‘cured’- can we start a conversation around how damaging neurotypicals are on a global scale and as a culture? Autistic culture is far kinder, more empathic, more embracing, more geared towards autonomy and honouring the individual and their individual ecosystem than I’ve EVER found in PNT culture. Autistic trauma is more caused by neurotypical culture and its deranged approach to everything related to existing, sustainability and ecological survival than it is related to what being Autistic is about.

I* feel* the "spectrum" has been misunderstood, misrepresented, and not researched to the fullest Nth* degree, in a way, that is devaluing to those on the "spectrum". It is in such a way, that it actually causes more trauma to the ones on the "spectrum", than the multi-faceted aspects of living daily & nightly with such a thing. The "spectrum" is far more multi-faceted than meets the eye*, as you* know, and it needs to be known, that autism has not and will never be fully understood or comprehended by people who do not actually experience it firsthand, internally. It is something that may take aeons to realize~* LoVE* *& Light*, my fellow* light worker*, Natalie*

I was a Special Education Teacher. In my few years before retiring I worked with Autistic students. The school did ABA all day, everyday. I came to believe that ABA is just not a way to educate. Maybe it works to “train” and manipulate behavior. The teacher did not run the classroom. The Behaviorists did! There has to be a better way!!

It is a beautiful thing to study and understand and help people. I do not understand beauty in the “diversity” of debilitating neurological conditions. Seems like trying to make it out for what it’s not, just ask somebody who is afflicted with such a condition.

I’m AuDHD, neurodivergent, profoundly gifted and highly sensitive- and I loathe ‘neurotypical’ culture which, in case you haven’t noticed, loves war, loves scarcity, loves to harm and denigrate others, has entrenched lies, manipulation and abuse into its foundation, thrives through domination and control, abuses any demographic it sees as ‘inferior’ to itself and has no empathy for anything or anyone it deems ‘other’. There are many neuroscientists who think that Autism is the next *evolution* of the human genome because if not for neurodiversity, the human race is doomed in the hands of neurotypicals, which has gotten the planetary community to the brink of collapse. There is a huge difference between Autism and Autistic *trauma* . Autism is a way of processing the world; developmental delay is NOT Autism.

Autism is not debilitating if you so understand yourself and communicate your needs to be accommodated. On the past, it has been quite a struggle in school, even in one meant for autism, but I have opened myself up to so many possibilities in improving my ability to see opportunities to express my purpose and not be restricted in my authenticity to the job market or any other way. It is not always easy
