This is gem of a series of videos. Back in 1978, I joined the Irish army reserve the 'FCA'. Poorly equipped, funded and equipped. But not always poorly trained when it came to musketry Standard rifle was the No. 4. This was disappointing to us recruits in a world of AKs and M16s. But we learned to love the Enfield and we learned how to shoot properly. A lot of what's demonstrated in the video is familiar. I always got a good group but when it came to application it all went wrong. The No.4 was standard right into the middle eighties but in reality city units mostly used the regular army's FN FAL particularly serving along the border. The Enfield was mostly ceremonial but we shot it at least twice a year. We also used SMLEs on the miniature range sleeved down to .22., One I used was dated 1918. If rifles could talk? Our No.4s were made in the 1954 or 55. When they were disposed of, many of the 'blond' often unwrapped rifles were sold to Canada. The rest were dumped in the Irish sea. A lot of those unwrapped rifles are treasured now. Incidentally we also used the Bren and sometimes wore the Brodie helmets. Plus the 1937 pattern but made in the fifties Web equipment. I still have my web because the QM strictly ordered us to not return it when we left because 'otherwise we'll never get the new stuff'. I always obeyed orders. Also I love the forest background. It's very like the hills and forests of Wicklow where the ranges were. I can still smell the pine forest. Not quite the majestic mountains of Canada just gentle rolling hills. +

I cannot stop being thoroughly impressed with your videos, between the dedication, the presentation, and information shared, this is truly a body of work that is both enjoyable and of great historical importance. I might try to make some of these targets and take my Lee Enfields out, I had no idea they were doing this at that time -way ahead of us Yanks in terms of military targetry. Cheers from down south! -Mr. 2A

Your videos are unreal. I've spent my life reading about the first and second wars. I'm no historian but I've always been fascinated with any info I can get. I've decided recently to find myself a Lee Enfield. Just to own a real piece of history. I had no idea all the variations and have learned so much watching your incredibly well done videos. Thank you so much for the effort, time, and resources (never mind the rifles and costumes, .303 ammo isn't cheap either!) Huge fan!

Reloading will be your best friend shooting LE milsurps; quality surplus ball ammo like Greek HXP has pretty much disappeared. Coles notes version of getting off to a good start: 1. Privy Partisan unprimed brass is identical to wartime VII ball as far as quality and specs go; nothing out there better. 2. For the Lee Enfields, Lee's collet neck sizing dies are the best choice for dealing with the Brit's deliberately generous military chambers. Collet size only after first firing, only bump the shoulder when necessary. Full length sizing after each firing will quickly kill your brass rather than it having a normal case life. 3. Start by creating a false shoulder on your new brass with a Lyman .33 caliber M die, then resize with the full length sizing die until the new cases chamber with a light crush fitting. You now have the equivalent of fire formed brass for your rifle - WITHOUT the initial case stretching that happens on first firing and attendant damage to your new cases. Now load your prepared cases. You only have to do it one time for each bag of new brass you purchase. 4. To get maximum bang for your buck out of your cases with minimal additional time and expense, anneal the case necks every few firings by rolling the case neck area between your fingers in the flame of an inexpensive alcohol lamp until it is too hot to continue holding in your fingers. It takes only a few seconds each case, so I do it while depriming the cases and inspecting them before the next step of reloading (which for me is cleaning in walnut media in a tumbler with some Flitz polish added). Cast bullet loads (as seen in many of Rob's videos) have the advantages of being inexpensive and putting far less wear on the throat/ball seat of the rifle compared to jacketed rounds used at further distances/more serious shooting. But that does involve an expenditure in a casting furnace, a quality mould, and some other bits and pieces (along with a bit of an initial learning curve). Enjoy whatever Lee Enfield you choose to begin your addiction with.

Wanted to say thanks for putting this research together! My British reenacting unit did a condensed version of the range qualification today and it went great. We only had access to a 50 yard range so I shrunk the target to a 2ft and we changed the grouping scoring. We even were able to get out and do the LMG portion. We're definitely going to do it again! In 6 shooters we had a full run from near perfect scores all the way down to a few who probably would have needed to go back to remedial training. :)

Years ago I attended the re enactment of the Battle of Ridgeway after the re enactment a competition was held between my unit The Queens Own Rifles Skirmishers and the Fenians . We used reproduction three band Parker Hale Enfields with a service load of 70 grains FG and all lead 540 grain .577 lard and beeswax lubricated bullet standing kneeling and prone at 100 and 200 yds . I had rifle No. 13 which inspite of the unlucky number allowed me to walk away with 2 golds and a silver medal competing against my own fellows and 40 Americans firing their own repro Springfields. Regardless of the rifle a day at the ranges was always enjoyable time. Friendly competition is the hallmark of a good rifleman win or lose .

Outfrikingstanding shooting good sir. Y'all gotta realize he's dealing with extremely inconsistent milsurp ammo. Not because of being milsurp but because of cordite propellant used. I'm confident you would've done substantially better with consistent ammunition. Thank you for going through the troubles of your unique presentation. Your attention to follow through paid off with the hangfires. Would have been much larger groups if not for that. Awesome.

I remember doing CQB with the No.4 as a cadet. Fire a "burst" (this was the official term for it) of two rounds rapid while standing (triggering with middle finger) then take cover and fire again. When we got to use the SLR it was a whole different world.

Thanks for the video on the rifle course, I take it the 2nd finger Rapid was not approved of then. (Me: - re-enactor with a 20G, musket rest & matchcord + a Deact ShLE III* /16 (diff bolt end to your's) BSA for fun. And Club against bayonet would be fun (Loc. Bisley audible))

The Middle finger technique is a bit of a red herring... It is not at all needed for any kind of conventional rapid fire.... As shown here.

An excellent video Rob! I really enjoyed watching this and learned a lot too. I have to agree, I think you have the finest range that I have seen anywhere in the world. I'm just wondering if I can design a similar practice for my club with the award of badges perhaps...an interesting thought. Thanks for the inspiration.

@@britishmuzzleloaders It took two years but we ran small comp ran on my range today following the 1942 format. It's a 100 yard range but all the targets were scaled down as necessary. It's a pity we can't post photos on here! It was a great success and a lot of fun. Anyway, many thanks for the inspiration and for showing how the whole range practice can be achieved.

Never got to fire the Lee Enfield. Pity, I always heard good things. Incidently, your groupings/applications are not disimilar to those practised in the 1970/80s. However we did have the 7.62 SLR and later (in 1987) the unfortunate SA80. Nice shooting btw.
