What else should I do ? Say congrats on having to waste the time to find 2 screws that are the same then lay them in place , then after all that just assume by sight they are exactly even, only to use them to make an indent so u know where to drill for different Sized dowels, even though a speed square and marker/pencil would've been quicker and more accurate &efficient ? Just curious. 😂

Well…I am sure this will work for projects that require no precision and where looks are secondary. If you build a chicken coop or a hamster cage and that is your set of circumstances then by all means go for it. But there is no way this would fly in, say cabinet making where precision in your joinery is crucial. If you tried this there, you will end up wondering why you suddenly find that you have a huge gap in one corner and can’t get anything to line up properly. That is incredibly frustrating. My tip: Use a jig for that. Does not have to be anything fancy or expensive so long as you have consistent results with it. Signed, a maker who never learned a trade and learned through (sometimes expensive) trial and error and who figured that only maybe 10% of the time you spend making stuff go into the actual sawing, drilling, chiselling etc - the rest is mostly planning and setup.

I need this trick for dowling broken pieces of my chainsaw carvings. I certainly tell customers of any damaged weak spots since I know if the damage is strong enough. Same with cracking, or checking. But smart carvers make them check so we can repair them THEN stain or paint it. Sorry, I don't know why I need to tell y'all that but this trick can definitely be used by everyone.

Most of my experience with dowel joints is fixing bad ones. For pine I would go with some kind of metal fastener or m&t joint and glue with clamps. Any racking force on that joint will be bad so some kind of bracing would be good.
@anniebender975
@anniebender975 Жыл бұрын
This is a fine way to line up dowel holes. Physical measurements like this, as a rule of thumb 😉 are more reliable than numerical ones. You can fiddle around with squares and scales all day long and Human Error can still confound the result. The tricky part here is holding the piece flush; basically it's not gonna happen. You will end up with a slight ridge or twist. This is fine for quick 'n' dirty applications with .125" precision tolerance: country furniture, utility furniture/simple machines(shop shelves, workbench, stitching pony, weaving loom, etc), or structures. A dowel is technically a "slip tenon," like a biscuit, which can actually be stronger than proper mortise and tenon. Definitely stronger than a 🐰 rabbet, of course. The holes drilled in this video are the correct size for the dowels. They go in snugly with finger pressure. If you plan on using glue, never make joints so tight they must be pounded in hard with a mallet; the glue will squeeze out (this is called a "glue-starved" joint). Only problem here is he has drilled the holes a bit too close to the end of the board, I think. Maybe needs smaller dowels. It's probably fine, though, honestly. Basically these physical measurement-type old carpenter hacks are ways to streamline a process where TIME IS MONEY and you simply don't need 100% precision and accuracy. Very few customers wanna pay for pristine craftsmanship just for its own sake.

He used the other piece to tap the screws and the first piece. So, it had the marks on it as well in the correct position. He just didn't show drilling those holes. But as long as the edges were lined up on the two boards, then drilling into the screw marks will make the dowel holes line up in both, so that the edges also line up.

This is laughable. If you don't care what it looks like, go for it. But this will never line up for too many reasons to list. @@ghostridergale --- That is the way to go, and really not slower when you factor in the time to glue in dowels. I have my Kreg system mounted to a board and it becomes quite fast once you're used to it. I've even considered getting another one or two and having them set up in pre-adjusted sizing, to accept say 3/4", 5/4" and 1.5" stock. That would be the way to go if you use this type of thing a lot. Kreg also makes an electric *production* version, that sells for around $400.00 which isn't bad if you have reasons to own one....
