I used the old head set lower cup as a protector to slam in the new crown race into its place (with screwdriver and hammer).

If the crown race is for a headset with a sealed cartridge bearing, then you can cut it with a hacksaw, making it a snap-ring of sorts. Makes installation/removal a breeze.

Before fully watching I'm thinking hubs because of the color of them. But I don't think it looks bad IMO. That was very wrong Also, with the crown race. At least with mine, there is a gap in it to allow it to stretch over what it sits on. You can put a flat head in there to stretch it out just a little bit more and it'll come off easily

Why don't you take out the disk from the front wheel? Isn't it a little dangerous to have it like that? Just curious. Sick headset upgrade

Would you like to tighten the chain a wee bit? Wrong guess! I use a wood chisel to get the crown race far enough away from the crown to get my well abused sacrificial screwdriver in there.

I, for one, Know it's not the rotor. That being there with no caliper makes it even more brakeless than removing it ever would.

what is the difference between a normal fixed gear to a tracklocross one? Im thinking of upgrading my steel one but I dont know the difference. and I thought you'll be removing the brake disc.

Anyone know where I can get my hands on an entry level gravel bike in the states for under $300? New/used doesnt matter. Though I have no knowledge on how to build a bike so individual parts are a no go.

I would look for an old hybrid 700c wheeled bike. They can usually be had in your budget and take recently wide tires. That is if you don't mind going without drop bars.

Honestly probably your best bet at that price range is finding a used rim brake cyclocross bike but your tires are going to limited to 33c. Your other options are probably going up a little bit and you can probably find a Surly Cross Check (I see them sometimes for $500ish) or finding an old 26in rigid mtb and converting it into a bit more of a gravel bike or some older kind of 70s era road bikes have more tire clearance. But buying any of those probably is going to require some work (especially the 26in or older road bike). Building a bike is easy and there are tons of how to's online but it is never cheaper unless you have a bunch of parts laying around and all the special tools to do more specific tasks.
