Love the Tracklocross bike. So simple. Teaching myself to put together stuff was the best. I have so many options at my disposal like rebuilding my bikes, swapping parts, upgrading and simple cabling. I don't have to pay anyone to do all that stuff if I want to try something. Occasionally I have my favorite mechanic do stuff when I don't want to or if I just want to support him in these lean times, but hey I'm not making much money right now either and to have the freedom to do that stuff is awesome. Keep up the content. I've been following you almost from the beginning, and your channel has become one of my favorites. Good job.

Definately a good point, if you are going to go with the trouble of buying a frame, its better served to be prepared to do all of the legwork yourself in researching components. By the time you have everything you need, you might as well build it!! And if you are further unsure, use your LBS who will only need to spend the time and charge you for making sure it works brilliantly and it will cost you a lot less in labour charges :)

I look forward to your ending "Subscribe or I will....." comments. Too funny man! Back to tracklocross... nope. Not for me. I'd need brakes and a freewheel. Timing where I need the cranks to be to avoid obstacles and not crashing doesn't sound that fun to me....even though I ride fixed on streets and quite often with Los Angeles traffic. (I do use a single brake up front). That being said, gotta respect those that do ride fixed off road

kevinjfeeney77 I use both when I ride technical trails. I need to time the pedals and easily lock the wheel so I don't bang my toes into rocks and logs. Im old (and wise) enough that I NEED to care for my knees! Brakes front and rear also make long descents and long rides much more doable. I use brakes much less since I've started fixing and singlespeeding. My old roadie friends say I ride much smoother in packs. I don't do many group rides anymore !

Totally understood. If a client were to say, "How can you charge me so much time when you've only produced X lines of code?" the answer would be, "Because I left out the X x 1,000 lines of code that didn't work." And I've had a lot more fun in the last two years learning how to fix and modify my own bike than I would have if I'd left it to the LBS.

Niklas Evers Tire size is the 1st thing I look at. You want to use at least a 35c tire. You're going to be seated a lot more over bigger bumps. Look for an old steel 'cross or touring bike. It must have horizontal drop outs! They have clearance and canti posts and more relaxed geometry. If you ride technical trails, these things are nice. I'm not a fan of long reach brake calipers either although they probably work fine. Because you control speed with your feet so much you don't need ultra strong brakes. They're only for longer steeper descents and emergency stops. They WILL SAVE your knees! The heavier tubing of touring bikes also helps absorb lots of trail buzz. I Iove my Miyata Sport Cross. I got it for free! Old flat bar crossover (fitness) bikes make good conversions too. Just try to get a cromoly tubed frame not Hi Tensile steel. Lots of people have bikes like this gathering dust and taking up space in their garage. They're really common. Put a tall stem on and some dirt drop bars and you're ready to rock!

It just takes time and patience. You will learn as you go. Great learning experience! If you get frustrated or broke, Stop for a few weeks and then resume progress. The nice thing about bikes this simple is that you can often find things for cheap or free. Check around for co-op bike shops or shops that sell used stuff. Its always best to buy parts in person. I only buy things online that I'm absolutely sure of. No guessing. I always look forward to riding my perfect bikes. I keep changing stuff until I get exactly what I want.

Mashing big gears and skidding lots will eventually damage your knees. Believe me, I'm old. I've got a dinglespeed set up. 2 chainrings, a Surly double cog and a White Industries double freewheel on the flip side. My 4 gears are 40x17, 36x21 fixed, 40x16, 36x19 free. Its a real versatile trail/road set up suitable for technical trails and steep mountains. Strong, simple and foolproof. The fact that I need to stop and get off to change gears motivates me to pedal a lot harder.

Except for one, every other bike I've owned has had a pinch flat or multiple pinch flats.. My fatbike, at 10psi or less, is still on the original tubes.

Well, I run tubeless at low pressures 25-35 psi and feel my rims banging into things at least twice each ride. I NEVER get flats! (knocking on wood!😁) Before, with tubes I got a few flats and was forced to ride slower and use higher pressures. Now, knowing that difference, it's like night and day. I never feel confident with tubes in there and traction suffers greatly. IF you want the best tire performance and ride comfort and IF you have PATIENCE to perfect your setup and MAINTAIN it, once you go tubeless you won't go back. Patience and persistence is key!! And you don't need expensive tubeless ready stuff. Ghetto tubeless is where it's at. The original tubeless is still the best. I haven't had one tire issue in 15 years of rocky riding! This on skinny 'cross tires!

Ive never paid anyone to fix my bikes. I started fixing tires at 6 years old when my dad taught me and told me learn or walk! I learned! Walking sucks! Now I'm sorta retired, have a side business building custom wheels and wrench in shop part time for the pro deals. Im also slowly learning how to braze, tigweld and collecting frame building tools.
