I have used this product with success. I have wet it, though. Instead of the ties (which I have purchased at a local DYI home store), I have whipped the ends with a good quality wire. I have also used water-based glue (like Elmer's) to further secure the ends. It works! Don't use petroleum-based glue. I then spray the wrap with the correct heat paint. Enjoy. So no silicone spray need to complete the instal?? can one use the silicone anyway? ... also... what if a guy was to use a ceramic paint prior installing the wrap.... would that cause any adverse affects?? ... thanks....
@DesignEngineering
@DesignEngineering 7 жыл бұрын
You do not need to use the silicone paint after the install. You can use it on Titanium but it is a different process for application. You would need to spray a coat on, run it through a heat cycle, add a second coat, go through a heat cycle then add a third. Because it is a different material than glass fiber, it soaks into it differently and needs a few coats and a few heat cycles for it to adhere properly. It will protect and prolong the life of the wrap and can be used. As far as having Ceramic paint on the header before wrapping, you can wrap over it. It will speed up the process of burning off the ceramic paint faster than it normally would, but it is OK to wrap over ceramic paint.

The video states to wrap from collect up to the engine side. Would it hurt to start at the head and wrap down to the collector as long as the sown edge faces the collector?
@DesignEngineering
@DesignEngineering 4 жыл бұрын
It's not going to "hurt" to wrap that way - take it from someone who did it that way before working at DEI. The point of wrapping it the way we prescribe is to prevent premature fraying. The "sewn" edge should ideally be the edge that's visible, whether you wrap toward or away from the header. Think of it as a more built-up, calloused edge, that can handle more wear and tear.

question: since wrapped and/or ceramic coated headers dissipate way less heat, and impressive results are often seen where the difference can be between 200f (treated) and 800f (untreated) does the heat tend to stay more in the block, or do the exhaust gases themselves simply get more hot inside?

Hi, i´m thinking about trying the Titanium wraps for first time on headers, but looking about opinions and experiences with it people talks about how this kind of wraps can damage headers because they keep moisture from condesation and it generates oxidation, is it true? Another question would be, how long does it last? do you need to renovate them? Thx in advance.
@DesignEngineering
@DesignEngineering 7 жыл бұрын
If it is used on a lesser quality header with a low quality steal it could. With our experience, water and moisture will not affect the header. The heat from the header dries the wrap so water will not sit in the wrap. And as long as you would follow the 1/4" overlap rule when installing, the right amount of heat will stay in the pipe and not overheat the metal. A lot of times if a header degrades, it is because the header is double wrapped, holds in too much heat and degrades the metal.

@DesignEngineering
@DesignEngineering 2 жыл бұрын
Julian, The proper way to insulate the intake tubing would be to use a heat reflective material such as Reflect-a-Gold or Reflect-a-Cool. These will block radiant heat from soaking into the tube in turn keeping IAT's down. Exhaust wrap is meant to contain heat and is primarily intended for hot side piping.

Not mentioned is the fact that if the overlap develops a gap and the tube is exposed, it is very possible that the exhaust will burn a hole through the steel. A friend had a Camaro running a 302 with manual trans and that happened to him. Plus, try to get all the way to the flange. Why risk it? Jere Stahl of York, PA (Stahl Total Tuned Headers), used to badmouth wrapping any header saying he had more repairs from wrap damage than for any other reason. ACP headers in Harrisburg is now making them exactly as the originals with the same methods and materials. Stahl headers were never cheap and it is a shame we lost him a few years ago. His wife had the website removed with all his instructions. My friend with the Camaro says that properly wrapped, the do work and horsepower is increased enough to make it worth the expense.

@DesignEngineering

+Gavin F We usually recommend a 2" x 50ft roll per V8 header. If it is a shorty header it will take a little less than that. But you will need more than 1 - 2" x 50ft to do both headers. As far as the temp heat reduction, it kind of depends on the motor and other mods you have done to the car but we usually see about a 45-50% decrease in heat under the hood from the headers.

We usually see about a 50% temperature drop in under hood radiant temps. And it would be close for one 2"x50' roll to do both headers. It would honestly be a little more than that. Probably another 2"x15' roll you would also need.

Probably a stupid question, the header I'm going to buy is made 100% of stainless steel. Will wrapping it with the titanium wrap be harmful or helpful on the steel? Just dont want any degradation of my header.... and does this also help with hp gains? Is it strong enough for long term usage?
@DesignEngineering
@DesignEngineering 8 жыл бұрын
Not a stupid question at all. It will not degrade the metal. We tested wraps with a 1/4" overlap when wrapping. This lets the right amount of heat out of the metal to not affect it. We have seen people double wrap the pipes thinking that if one wrap is good, two is better. And this isn't the case. When you keep too much heat in the header by double wrapping, thats when problems occur. And it will help in power gains. Hard to say how many horsepower because there are so many variables. But it reduces the underhood temps so it cooler air is available to the intake and the engine. It also decreases the density of the exhaust gasses so it lets the whole system become more efficient.

@DesignEngineering
@DesignEngineering 7 жыл бұрын
When you see the same named product for a lower price, it has all to do with the materials used in the wrap and the heat capabilities. Many wraps will call themselves Titanium or Lava wrap but do not have the thermal capabilities and are not constructed from high temp basalt materials like DEI wraps or glass fiber with a propriatary coating. And many of the cheap price wraps come from out of the United States and they are basically cheap material knockoffs. DEI was the first to come out with the Titanium name product line back in 2006/2007. We used the name Titanium to signify the strength and color of the product and what it is capable of doing because of the high quality materials. All of our wraps are made here is the USA and we focus on performance standards above all.

Correct! There are plenty of people that still will secure the beginning of the wrap with a locking tie for peace of mind, but that is up to the user.

I have exhaust wrap on my Quad and after a couple of rides it is all White and not Black anymore. Why? I dont remember the brand.
@DesignEngineering
@DesignEngineering 5 жыл бұрын
Most traditional wraps are made from glass fiber, which is clear/white naturally. The black wraps are made with a coating that wears off over time, especially if it sees a lot of direct exposure to rain and puddles. DEI has silicone spray available to preserve and/or renew the color on glass fiber-based wraps. Our Titanium wrap is not made from glass fiber, but instead stranded basalt fiber. The bronze color you see is the natural color and won't fade away.

I got some of your wrap but it unravels immediately after cutting--how do I prevent that?
@DesignEngineering
@DesignEngineering 7 жыл бұрын
You can put tape on the area you are about to cut and cut through the tape and wrap together. Or after you cut it, trim off any long loose fibers and Fold the corner in to give you a solid edge to start with. You can see this in the video at about 1:20 into this video. This will prevent any fraying or unraveling when you are wrapping.

How long can I expect the wrap to last?
@Aryan8Pride8
@Aryan8Pride8 10 жыл бұрын
I've had this exact wrap on my bike for over three years now and I'm replacing it now. Mine got dirty and doesn't look as great as it did. I never had a problem with it coming off or getting loose and you shouldn't either of it's done properly. It's very tedious, and takes patience, so if you lack patience, just pay to have it done. lol If it is done right, it will never come off. Just wear gloves when you put this stuff on because I had like a thousand paper cuts on my hands from this shit. It burned like hell in the shower. Also, hose clamps worked a lot better than their outrageously expensive metal ties.

does the wrap melt
@DesignEngineering
@DesignEngineering 7 жыл бұрын
No it will not melt. It is rated to 1800F direct heat and 2500F intermittent heat. In the unlikely event it would ever get that hot, it would not melt. It would get brittle.

eye protection? why,are those fibers dangerous,something you're not telling us?
@DesignEngineering
@DesignEngineering 5 жыл бұрын
You should see our other videos. We're big on protection! Seriously though, we always recommend standard PPE when doing any work. The step where you have to trim off excess fibers could result in short fibers that could get into your eyes, especially if you're under a vehicle, installing wrap on a pipe that's already installed.

@DesignEngineering

+Xeno Jupiter It doesn't really do anything for the sound. If you wrapped the entire exhaust, it might quiet it down a bit as an added bonus but it will not be a noticeable difference.

why do you need gloves?
@DesignEngineering
@DesignEngineering 5 жыл бұрын
We tell you to wear gloves because we always recommend the use of personal protective equipment when doing any work, regardless of the level of risk involved. That said, installing Titanium wrap is no more risky than changing your oil or filling your tires with air. The basalt fibers Titanium is made from does not splinter like the fiberglass in traditional heat wraps, so it's not going to leave you itching like fiberglass.

Whats the point of wrapping? May sound like a dumb question but with or without stuff wrapped in my car i am not going to touch hot car parts. Lol
@DesignEngineering
@DesignEngineering 8 жыл бұрын
Not a dumb question at all. It will help in power gains. Hard to say how many horsepower because there are so many variables. But it reduces the underhood temps so cooler air is available to the intake and the engine. It also decreases the density of the exhaust gasses so it lets the whole system become more efficient.

Yeah those ties are garbage. What a waste of $20. Just use worm gear clamps. So much easier. Look much better than the chicken wire that snaps when tightening with the tool.
