The Pace Report: "Latin Bird" The T.K. Blue Interview
Welcome to this special edition of ‪@ThePaceReport‬ live from the 2023 Charlie Parker Jazz Festival at Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem, New York.
Summerstage in conjunction with Jazzmobile dedicated keeping free live jazz in Harlem and in New York. In celebration of Bebop and alto saxophonist innovator Charlie Parker, kicking off this year's 2023 Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, saxophonist and composer T.K. Blue performed an all Latin set of Parker's music. In 2010 T.K. recorded "Latin Bird" which was him revisioning Parker's compositions by way of Caribbean and Latin music.
It was Jazzmobile that taught T.K. jazz music and musical lessons as a teenager. He learned jazz theory harmony, sight reading, improvisation, and big band performance while attending Jazzmobile classes. Some of his teachers included jazz legends Jimmy Owens, Frank Foster, Jimmy Heath, Sonny Red, and Ernie Wilkins.
In this interview, T. K. and I sit down and reflect on the life and legacy of Charlie Parker, discuss the importance of Jazzmobile, and talk about some of his of his important saxophone teachers.
