The Pace Report: "Making The Blonde Connection" The Jose James Interview
Welcome to this special edition of The Pace Report live from the 2023 Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival.
Over the last decade, vocalist Jose James has been one of the few jazz vocalists that not only stretched the music bounds fusing Soul, Hip-Hop, and experimental, he continues to explore the the modern and contemporary
songwriters/performers of this generation. His latest album, "On and On," is a revisioning of soul vocalist Erykah Badu's iconic work. The Dallas, Texas native released her critically acclaimed debut album "Baduizm" in 1997 and changed the landscape of modern Soul music. Songs like "On and On", "Otherside of the Game", and "Next Lifetime" inspired a young Jose James while he was attending college and still considers Badu a major influence on the direction of his songwriting and focus on music.
Jose left Blue Note Records and formed his label, Rainbow Blonde, as a way to produce and release his own projects and material. He also wants to develop and produce new talent that deserves exposure and time to develop, something the major labels can't afford to do anymore due to budget cuts and dying off of the old record label model. Look and support projects on the label from bassist Ben Williams, Taali, and Bright and Guilty.
We sat down recently at this year's 2023 Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival to discuss the new album and label, reflect of the legacy of Erykah Badu, and his role as a teacher while living in Switzerland after the COVID-19 pandemic.
