very nice wheels, but at these prices I would always get a handbuilt set of wheels. You can achieve similar weights a rim depths with better hubs and durability for the same price.

I haven't found many better hubs than Campagnolo hubs. The 3-pawl body is a bit outdated, though. ps: they go around 2000 euro over here which isn't too bad for the weight / reputation.

What is the external width of the rim? And what tire width you are using?

Lovely balanced review as ever but where was the free hub sound check? Given some hubs make a real racket (yes, Hunt I’m looking at you), I’d love to know what they sound like. Maybe video short?

Hey Dave, great to see you’ve got your GP5000’s on the right way around, even though in an earlier video you made a point of saying manufacturer recommended tyre direction was irrelevant. 😳

Tyre direction doesn't make any significant difference but it makes sense to follow the instructions if only to stop all the complaining ;)

Great review as always David. But! There are a number of Chinese brands now, as tested long term by the likes of Ozcycle, that have been proven to be great quality, lighter with ceramic bearings and carbon spokes for nearly a third or even a quarter of the price. Why would we even bother with the “Jappy”👀, Campy or Zippy wheels??

Maybe the “Fulcrum” branded version would appeal more to Shimano groupset users? Although the logo’s on the wheels are very discreet compared to Campag of old. Thought they looked like classy wheels, but you could get a set of Ultegra R8170 C36’s for a fraction of the price!

Ultegra R8170 C36 are half the price (around 1000 vs. 2000), but they are 1480 grams while Hyperons are 1340 grams.

@@l.d.t.6327 yeah, not exactly apples for apples I know, but with C36 selling for £899 in the UK, and Hyperons at £2299, that’s a lot more for 100g.

Hi Dave, you mentioned the Hunt Limitless, and then when talking about hookless you mentioned "like hunt", I don't think Hunt make hookless rims, and the limitless certainly are hooked

Cup and cone bearings still? That's always a dealbreaker for me with Campy and Shimano hubs.

Lower rolling resistance and unless you are determined to jet wash them and thereby destroy the bearings very rapidly, there's no real downside.

@@graemefk6519 true, for offroad bikes I would get sealed bearings, but for on the road, cup and cone is fine.

It's the main selling point. I have cup and cone bearing wheels from both Campy and Shimano and they last forever. Can't say the same for standard bearing wheels.

@@grvl307 They're not (much) worse, but so are cup/cones not a dealbreaker. Anyone calling it a dealbreaker hasn't really given it much thought, I feel. I would even suggest cup/cone are more stabile in curves (especially compared to wheels with worn industrial bearings which have some play and thus more lateral play at the rim.

Nice wheels and yhe quality should be good from campy.. you can can buy a 35mm deep wheelset ex Asia for £600 around 1100g

And how long will those 600 quid wheels last? Genuine question, because longevity is what keeps me with Campagnolo wheels. I haven't broken any Campagnolo wheel in the last 10 years.

@@l.d.t.6327 hard to say but I've got a set of Asian carbon disc brake wheels with pillar spokes and powerway hubs with enduro bearings that I've had for 5 years and I've done around 30000 KMS on them.

I just can't concieve that one pair of wheels can worth like one complete carbon bike with 105 disc group on it.....😮, or except if they last like lifetime.

Hey David, FYI the term you used for Japan is considered pretty offensive here in the US. Perhaps not so much in Commonwealth countries, though wikipedia would cast doubt on it being universally couth, but you're speaking to a global audience and it's a bad look to be using that and related terms in this century. Not accusing you of having bad intent, by any means. I don't expect that UK schoolchildren learn about US internment camps in grade school, as kids do in the US, but just want to make you aware of the connotations of those terms when viewed through a different lens.

Just bought a sub-£100 set of wheels. Perfectly fine. No wheels should cost any more than a few hundred or buyers are being played. A few grams and a few seconds over a few kms is simply not worth it for >99.9% of riders. They are also likely to fail numerous times and cost as much to repair as they cost in the first place. Fulcrum--->you.

a good set of handbuilt wheels goes a long way, and those cost above 1000 euros with carbon rims and mid-tier hubs. I'd say they're worth it for the feel, not for speed. but it all depends on how much you want to spend on your hobby :)

@@l.d.t.6327 Ah okay that changes things a bit, but nevertheless you can buy a wheel that weighs 1180 grams costing 1700€ from a Euro brand (Ere), I don't want to diss any brands from the east but for some ppl it is a thing. Mostly less weight is more expensive ;-) but it can be the other way around as well.
