Hey Scrambler Stories! Quick question... are your Bark Busters specific for the XE or did you just get the standard Jet ones? I have broken my factory ones 2 times and I am ready to upgrade. Any info you could give would be great! :) Thanks in advance!

@@Mathew187187 I don't have any issues, but I'm also not use to wind protection. It's only bad on windy days riding interstate, but I just endure. Don't know what will be out for the 400 as far as third party accessories go, but there is better wind protection out there for the 1200, I just don't like the looks. So presumedly there will be options for the 400x. You'll have to test ride and see for yourself when you can.

@@TocaLaTierra So mine are just he universal ones, because that's what I had on my Street Scrambler and I just moved them over. I don't believe there were specific ones for the 1200 at the time, but there is now. The fit with mine are a little weird, but if you look at the ones specific for the 1200, they add a little spacer, so definitely go with those!

You can fit engine case savers for the Bonneville from Triumph which bolt straight on and offer protection from rocks etc hitting the exposed engine side cases at the front. Have you fitted a lithium battery, saves about 3.4 kg and kicks the bike over first time every time. It is easy to fit an extension to the rear of the bash plate to protect the oil filter and sump, and it can just curve up to the frame behind there where 2 threaded holes are waiting to be used. You can also fit the shorter and smaller indicators front and rear from Triumph and also the smaller rear brake light which locates the rear indicators up out of harm's way. All straight bolt on OEM gear. Check your crescent washers on the brake and gear shift pedals and the footpegs pins. They can be a loose fit from Triumph and can easily be knocked off when riding off road. Buy a kit of replacement crescent clips to take with you that are a tighter fit and much harder to be knocked off. I fitted the Type 4 Pivot Pegz, much larger than stock and comfortable. Also look at fitting a rear mudflap on the inside of the swingarm to stop all the mud and crap building up onto that large area at the front of the swingarm. Heat a plastic sheet with a heat gun and bend to fit and attach it to the rear of the airbox by 3M clip lok tape. Have a safe and great trip and will be following your fun.

Holy shit Batman, this is the best video for anyone looking to purchase this Scrambler. Brilliant, thank you so much for many great ideas for modifications & reality checks re protecting her from inevitable drops. I am in love with this bike. Throttle lock... insane idea for off road riding. My only concern is my size... 5'5" ...so curious as to people's experience riding this bike if they are smaller.
@ScramblerStories
@ScramblerStories 4 ай бұрын
Well, 5'5" might be tough for the XE. But your height doesn't really matter, your inseam does. My inseam is 33" and I can just flat both feet. Caitlyn's inseam is under 27", and she's never going to be able to ride this one. However, they have the XC that's a little lower, and now the new X is even lower while still being very capable. You can always lower springs as well. Best bet is to throw your leg over one at a local dealer and see for yourself.
@nataliefenelon4796
@nataliefenelon4796 4 ай бұрын
@@ScramblerStories ahh true, I could be 5'8" with hobbit height legs! The XC is definitely a more likely candidate, although not as capable off road (but nor am I!!) I suspect I may fall in love on the first date and the sound from those pipes could cause me to lose my head a little!! So I have avoided getting physical with one until I felt research saturated & back in my home State- makes the ride from the dealership shorter!
@ScramblerStories
@ScramblerStories 4 ай бұрын
@@nataliefenelon4796 Yeah I have a friend who's 6'2" but his inseam is 28". Forget the Scrambler 1200, my Street Scrambler is too tall for him! The plus side between all the different models is they sound the same. Although the XE is the best off-road, the the variants are still really good, and them being a little lower will be easier in some ways. There will be trade offs.

Hi great video and I like all your upgrades. I'm planning on getting a 1200 XE and I agree that the looks of the bike are much better than the other ADV "beak" bikes. I was wondering if you have had any problems with cooling? I read the cooling fins are functional along with the radiator, so it's kind of a hybrid. I live in Florida and need to get back to a water cooled bike. I have an air cooled Ducati Monster that likes to buck and chug when I'm in a traffic jam. Thanks for the video and I think I'm going to have to watch your whole catalog. Happy trails.
@ScramblerStories
@ScramblerStories 11 ай бұрын
You'll have no issues riding around Florida. The only time there can be issue is riding through a lot of mud, you can clog up the radiator and eventually it will overheat if it's a hot day (until you clean out the radiator). This can be avoided if you use a fender extension. But it's only happened to me three times in two and half years, and all three times were a lot of mud, plus a lot of riding. Both the Dalton Highway and the Dempster were over 1,000 miles. So it's not like a few hours of off-roading will do it. But as far as just riding around in non muddy conditions, no issues at all!

These brain-dead comments about the fuel tank being too small or the bike being too heavy are, I assume, coming from people who have never thrown a leg over a Scrambler 1200, let alone ridden one. It is an incredibly capable do-all machine. I don't need a 30L tank to get me to wherever I want to go. I love my XC.

For sure, getting a few on other videos too. You can't take it off-road, it's not on par with an ADV bike, etc etc. 🤣 Definitely people that haven't ridden one. I rode a Harley Pan Am recently, and going back to the Scrambler was like throwing my leg over a dirt bike. I'd much rather take the Scrambler off-road over most of the other ADV options out there.
@phils2180
@phils2180 Жыл бұрын
Well, there's off road and there's OFF ROAD. Maybe the "too heavy" comments are from people used to throwing lightweight dirt bikes around and compared to those the 1200 is HEAVY but it's not designed to compete with such bikes anyway.

Great info about real world mods . Am looking at a relocation to Kenya and am thinking about taking a 1200 Scrambler over as its semi rural where I am likely to go . Now I know what mods will be needed. Does it handle the desert heat well in terms of engine cooling ? Many thanks - Mark
@ScramblerStories
@ScramblerStories 8 ай бұрын
That would be awesome to have in Africa. I've done a lot of desert riding, and overall it's fine. But I do feel the radiator is small for this engine. I have had it overheating when in traffic in 100+ degree weather, but no issues if you're moving.

I have a Street Scrambler 900 and I'm very happy with it. For me personally a Street Scrambler 1200 would be the perfect Triumph, classic Bonneville styling with the extra go of the 1200 motor. I rode a Scrambler 1200 and decided it wasn't for me. I already have a "proper" dirt bike so don't need the extra off road ability touted by Triumph. When buying bikes like this you need to decide what "off road" means to you. Obviously there's no way the 1200 can compete with bespoke dirt bikes at half the weight but, IMO it is certainly a good alternative to the ugly, oversized Adventure offerings which seem so popular.

Hello good afternoon. I just found your channel, this particular episode is awesome. I have not gone through everything you have, but I do want to ask you if you did modifications or improvements to the suspension. I am a tall and big guy and one of the ones that found that the suspension is not for me and there is not that much room for improvement… I left the bike parked for months now, I may sell it, but I want to check if there are already options for this issue. Thanks.

TEC makes stiffer springs for the rear. For my weight, the suspension is great. It just needs to be set right for riding styles. But I don't weigh much, so if the sag isn't right on the rear then you add stiffer springs.

Great mods. How do you stay warm during cold rides on the highway? Does the flyscreen provide any protection from the wind chill?
@ScramblerStories

Warm jackets! The coldest I've ridden with this bike (for extended periods of time) is high 20s/low 30s fahrenheit at night. That was ok with a heated jacket liner on. Otherwise the goal (excluding short rides) is not to ride below the 40s. 50s and up is ideal. But the flyscreen does make a little difference over a long period on the highway in the cold, because it does take some of the wind off the chest. But not as much as a large windscreen would.

Yep, I have same protection. But take a look under the bike, you'll see sump guard doesn't cover oil pan completely! Few inches unprotected! That is for easy oil change, so you don't need to remove guard each time for plug and filter. Once I got a boulder suddenly jumped from the front tire directly to rear sump corner. Small crack was enough to loose oil😩 Oil sump cost was about $400 (with gasket, o-rings) and waited 2 months from England. Saved on replacement, did it myself, whole day job, was needed to remove side frame members(+side stand, foot pegs, radiator, etc.). Now - my next 1200XE tuning is better sump guard. But there is nothing from Triumph. Found one steel wider aftermarket, but stupidly shorter than stock. Thinking about to make something myself. Now I keep J-B Weld and oil close and don't take rough roads😢

Does the exhaust throw off a lot of heat on the right side? TIA ...
@ScramblerStories
@ScramblerStories 10 ай бұрын
Yeah it'll roast the leg. Seems to vary a little bit from bike to bike though, but mine is definitely hotter than my 900. There are a few solutions. Decat helps, some switch to a lower exhaust, some add additional heat shielding material. For the most part it's fine when riding though.

What kind of range are you getting out of that fuel tank?

Depends on the riding of course, but taking it easy over 200 miles. Riding aggressively,, around 150-200 miles.

How does it compare to the Street Scrambler when riding off-road?
@ScramblerStories
@ScramblerStories Жыл бұрын
Way, way better. It's much more stable thanks to the rake angle/wheel base, and the suspension is miles better in quality (not even counting the extra travel). There are so tradeoffs though. That's a lot of power for off-road, and it's easy to get the rear wheel loose, which can be a good thing or a bad thing pending perspective. It weighs the same, but the weight is higher up, and for my inseam, the height is normally fine, but there's been a few points where I had stopped on a hill, couldn't touch and then fell over! 🤣

That "small fuel tank" is enough for 300-340kms. Trust me, I ride a Scrambler 1200XE.👍🏼🤙✌️
@ScramblerStories
@ScramblerStories Жыл бұрын
Easily, the bike averages 50 mpg. Can do more if you take it easy, avoid 80mph interstates. I never have run out of gas, and we travel with a 3 gallon fuel bladder just in case if we need extra fuel (we only put fuel in it if there's a large gap between fuel stops, 200+ miles). Otherwise we both carry 1 liter emergency fuel canisters.

Dude , how tall are you ?? Scrambler 1200 xe has a good amount of ground clearance, is it comfortable for people who are 5 feet 9 or 5 feet 10inches tall ? I'm thinking of purchasing scrambler 1200 , it would be kind of u if u could enlighten me .

What's your inseam? That's what really matters. I'm just shy of 5'11" but my inseam probably around 33". THere's a low seat option for the 1200 too, but make sure the sag is right first.

Forgive my ignorance; but why modify a road biased bike to make it perform well off-road when you can purchase something like tiger rally pro? Assuming all these modifications result in same effective price as tiger.
@ScramblerStories
@ScramblerStories 11 ай бұрын
It's just as off-road capable as a Tiger, and the same money would need to put into the Tiger if I had gone that route. Crash bars, luggage racks, larger off-road foot pegs, etc. The Rally Pro is definitely better for touring due to the wind protection, but I like the Scrambler more. So it's about riding the bike you're most interested in. Love the Tiger though, would have one if I won the lottery. For what it's worth, I just did the Dempster solo and I passed a ton of ADV bikes. The Scrambler is far more capable than a lot of people would give it credit for.

Triumph Street Scrambler, now just called the Triumph Scrambler 900. Basically a Bonneville with off-road styling. Or if you compared it to this bike, it's this but with 4.7" of suspension travel, a 900cc engine, and lesser spec'd brakes, suspension, 19" front wheel instead of 21", etc.

No it's no problem. Just holds the throttle, so you can still roll off the throttle with it engaged, or just push the button and it lets go.

That's fair. I can definitely understand that perspective, or not wanting to take such a heavy bike off-road. For what it's worth, I crashed at 45mph in a deep rocky section on the Dalton Highway and the bike was fine other than some paint marks on the tank. And lowsided and highsided in that crash.
