About the time this originally aired, I was a stock boy in a Walgreens. A lady came in and asked where the “personal products” were. I told her aisle 9, and she questioned whether I knew what she meant. I told her “lady, it doesn’t get any more personal than aisle 9. “

why do old timey clips and movies sound like people had different voices back then, like a literal "old timey quality"

It started with the "radio voice." American radio actors wanted to have a distinct 'American' sound.

Back around the 30s/40s/50s people spoke with what’s called a transatlantic accent, something that i think was mainly used by actors and not actually so much by normal American citizens?? This kind of sounds like that to me.
@maremacd

But the accent you’re referring to was passé by the time this was made. They are putting it on.

Just the recording media and equipment. When SNL was broadcasted live it sounded and looked very different from the recorded version that would be rebroadcasted over the summer I noticed that as a kid when I started watching it.

I feel like quite a few people in the comment section are rather missing the point of this sketch. This is directly targeted at commercials that were very restricted in saying what a feminine product did. This is back when the Brady Bunch was ground breaking by having a man and woman in the same bed together.
@C0nstant1n
@C0nstant1n 5 жыл бұрын
I thought the point was that all the confidence women need is actually within and doesn't need a product to enhance it. That's why it's an item that doesn't really do anything, but makes all the difference to her. Because it makes her confident.
@Hawkwinter01
@Hawkwinter01 5 жыл бұрын
@@C0nstant1n Nope, it really wasn't that deep, it's a nice sentiment though. Still shitty that women couldn't tell what was being advertised. You might be able to find some of those old commercials, to see what prompted that sketch.

It's context. Watch ads for women's products in the 70s, look at magazine ads for women's products in the 70s, etc... and then you can appreciate this more. I'm pretty sure that Alexander the Great knew some kneeslappers about Athenians that would make us scratch our heads in confusion and it's simply due to our lack of context. Humor isn't timeless and very few things age well. But it doesn't mean that just because something isn't entertaining to you, then it can't be entertaining to anybody.

It's as much commentary as comedy. This era is when the TV commercials stopped working. The young saw the bullshit. Products were invented that were completely unnecessary... And sold using fear and manipulation. You're identity is attached to a product & sold back to you. In this case, femininity.
