You might think you know why the platypus is a bizarre beast. Maybe you know that it lays eggs, that the males have venomous spurs on their ankles, and that it can sense electricity with its bill. But do you know the most bizarre thing about its anatomy: what major organ is the platypus missing?

An interesting thing most people don't know is that through history, most mammals actually laid eggs! We're just part of an offshoot branch that became really successful and widespread, but numbers-wise something like 90% of mammals through history were egg-layers.
@wxlurker
@wxlurker Жыл бұрын
I didn’t know that, wow. Is there any evolutionary reason why non-egg laying mammals are the majority now?

@@wxlurker a healthy pregnant zebra is fast enough to outrun a lion, a healthy freshborn zebra may outrun a lion if spotted early enough. A zebra egg can not even spot a lion.
@ykim9820
@ykim9820 Жыл бұрын
@@wxlurker The reason for evolution is simply that it offers better conditions for survival. In this case, it supports the survival of mammals, particularly their young. Live birth allows better protection (e.g. parasites, predators) and physiological support (e.g. heat regulation, continuous nourishment) for the development of the fetus. It facilitates the growth of a larger fetus, and it's more efficient. The downside is that the mother suffers a major physiological disturbance to support the fetus, and the mother herself is at an increased risk to dangers. Egg laying is the opposite. An egg offers less protection than a womb, it limits the size of the fetus, and it's less efficient (especially animals that lay a large clutch of eggs with a low survival rate). However, in return, it is far less taxing and strenuous on the mother's wellbeing. The mother can also have more offspring per litter, as the size of her body isn't a constraint.

@ykim9820
@ykim9820 Жыл бұрын
@@kim-6241 You're thinking of the causes behind the emergence of certain traits, not the reasons why evolution favors and develops these traits. Evolution is not simply due to spontaneous mutations and gene exchanges. It's about how said mutations increase the survival of the species. Otherwise, that trait would just die out if they lower survivability, regardless of how they first came about.

They glow under UV only when UV light is absorbed by their fur and reflected back. Reptiles & birds can see in UV, so if the platypus' fur absorbs UV light they'll be less visible in those wavelengths, granting them greater evasion from their reptilian & avian predators. Of course, this hasn't been tested yet, but it's the most reasonable explanation.

Vampire bats don't quite have a stomach either. Their food literally goes into their veins and then drains into a vestigial widening at the top of their intestines that used to be a stomach. That's why vampire bats share blood meals with starving roostmates, because if they don't eat they can literally suffocate from lack of blood to transport oxygen from their lungs.
