CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Having thrown out the Box, Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is confronted by Em (Natasha Calis), who demands he return it. When he refuses to do so, Em's behavior takes a turn for the deranged.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Inspired by Los Angeles Times writer Leslie Gornstein's article "A Jinx in a Box," this horror film from Ghost House Pictures and director Ole Bornedal (Nightwatch) tells the tale of a broken family that comes under attack from a malevolent supernatural entity of Jewish folklore. Shortly after her parents (Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick) divorce, a young girl purchases an ornate antique box at a yard sale. In the weeks that follow, the young girl forms an intense fixation on the box, her behavior growing increasingly bizarre as she falls into the grip of a diabolical apparition. When the girl's father discovers that the relic is in fact a holding cell for the disconnected soul of a deceased person who has been denied entry into the afterlife and needs a human host to inhabit, he fights to rid her of the evil that threatens to consume her body and soul.

I remember doing those moths. Particle simulation with fine control over the behaviour. One that can home towards a target, and another set around that light, where the moths had to be made extra large, to read from that distance. Didn't occur to tilt the moths vertically a bit. I've done more insects sims since then and got a chance to observe in detail proper animations, and how moths doing dart around like small birds, but hover mostly. They're at 45 degree angle most of the time in flight and they tilt as they pick up speed and decelerate. The moths I coded didn't do any of that. These sims were done in early days of nucleus solver in Maya. Control was limited. A hundred or so moths could run almost in real time, but over that, like in the bedroom shot - that required augmentation of moths into foreground/midground/background. I had my hand in about half the CG shots on that film. Some weird cg things that no one would suspect were CG. Movie was cut first, and then there were reshoots. The movie was supposed to be "intelligent", but didn't have enough conventional jump scares, so all of that stuff was embedded later, maybe half a year after everything was wrapped. Lots of moth shots. I coded the sim, so they could interact with static obstacles, or chase a moving target, but that's about it. They could not interact with surfaces that were moving. Any time a moth did interaction - that was hand animated.
